As American Idol runner-up to Ruben Studdard on the 2003 Idol season, Clay Aiken appears to have emerged the career winner. Standing room-only concerts, an extended run on Broadway starring in Spamalot, an autobiography at #2 on the New York Times Best Sellers list, five albums selling millions of copies and an avid international fan club of “Claymates” have kept Clay firmly in the spotlight. His latest album, Tried and True, was released this past June, and Clay will also be seen this summer in his first PBS-TV special.

Children Policy:
No children under 2. All guests must have a ticket for admittance.

SHARON -  Hi to you!  Hope the Ohio peeps are having a good time!

Something to think about - if the balcony is full that means to me that the economy paid a big part in the lower ticket sales for this tour, that and the threat of bad weather and being so close after the holidays.

In these concerts, Clay seems to be engaging the audience more. I think he listened or read all the suggestions as to what we wouldnt miss and what we would be unhappy to see gone. He pared down the band and did not go for big productions.

There was no way he was going to cancel any concerts if he could help it.

I sure love the pictures with Clay.  So many people have meet & greets because of the PBS donations.  Even tho' I didn't know if I would get to any particular concert, I signed up for 3 of the OFC M & G's, but my name didn't get pulled out of the hat!  ;)

The good thing about the OFC M&G is that many many folks who had NEVER met him were able or will be able to this year.

Also, I am reading across the boards that folks bought tickets to shows but because of family or medical emergencies, or their travel mates backing out, are unable to attend. The tickets were SOLD, but the seats will be empty.

I get that and I don't fault them for being fans and supportive but it's just not fair he thinks they are special to get on stage with him a lot, get those Meet and Greets and like go on a hunt for him to find things like they did in NY last year. UGH They were so annoying on Lancaster last summer in the bus line.

Marilyn - have you heard anyone say anything about Clay's voice tonight.  When I read about last night's show this afternoon, it seemed some people thought he might have had a bit of trouble in places.

Most folks that were AT the concerts said you could not hear any issues-but sometimes on the cellcert it might be distorted.

However, he did say that his throat hurt a little. From the CH

ch1 wrote:
I have a question - if Clay's voice is hurting from doing five shows in a row - how do Broadway singers not blow out their voices? If Clay were to perform in a show with a lot more singing than Spamalot - how does he not lose his voice?

In Broadway shows, the performers usually aren't onstage and singing and performing non-stop for 2 hours. There are, of course, exceptions, but for the most part it is the case. They also are not getting on a bus after each show and traveling to a different city, and in some cases, a different climate every night. Touring companies would be the exception of course, but even they are not usually traveling every night.

Quote
I could think of one show where a character sang as many songs in a two hour period as Clay does during this tour, and if those songs were as vocally challenging as many of these songs are, I might consider being concerned. As it is I can't think of a one so I'm not worried about Clay's ability to handle Broadway. Looking forward to it, as a matter of fact.

*And did I miss something? He hasn't, actually lost his voice yet, has he?*

Quote
Many reasons, take your pick-

*He sings a lot more on a Solo Concert Tour than he would in a show.

*He wouldn't have all the M&G's if performing on Broadway

*He wouldn't be traveling from city to city and sleeping on the bus

*He had a cold before the tour started

Gosh. I haven't posted at this place in ages! (Not that I was ever a really prolific poster in the first place...)

*waves to everyone*

So I've been kind of a bad fan the past couple years... didn't pick up his latest album since it didn't interest me much, don't even listen to his older stuff much anymore, and heard something about this tour but didn't bother to look into get tickets...

And then earlier this week, I was listening to the local radio station, and heard a contest... they wanted the 14th texter... and the prize was Clay Aiken tickets! Well, I got a little excited about the possibility of seeing my old gay celebrity boyfriend again, and whipped out my little cell phone and texted away.

And I won! And turns out they are 2nd row center center tickets. Which is kind of way cool! I got a little excited upon seeing that.

So I guess I still have a tiny bit of a fangirl left in me. The dude sure can sing. And he's funny, to boot.

If any of my old buddies are going to be there tonight, try to stop by and say hi!

Interesting info Marilyn. I know sometimes when singers are sick they just go on vocal rest. He needs to not talk too much and save his singing and talking just for the concerts.

That's nice to hear. You can't help but still love him. It never goes away not for me anyway. ;D

I think thats why he substituted Both Sides Now for Solitaire- that is a really vocally challenging song.

He is talking now about musical genres

Didn't Scarlett go to everyone of the Timeless Tour.  I would really hate to add up all the cost of the airfare alone--it would be astronomical.  But she does great work and we all get to benefit from it.

The reason I like the you tube links is that a lot of people cannot or do not want to download to their computer. And it is not allowed to link and play directly from clack unlimited-only download. If you play directly it eats up their bandwidth.

Clayversity has the same rule- download only.  I hope no one is playing directly from the download sites.

MARILYN -  In 2008 when Nancy, Lexie and I flew to NYC (and spent some great time with you), I paid $18.00 total for 3 round trip tickets for me and my family . .  because of thank-you points from my Mastercard!  Now the flights are really high!  And . . . . Cellcerter has not seen Clay since Spamalot

He called out the cellcerters -one was from Peru and was certing to someone in Kansas named Mindy. Others would not tell who they were certing too.

He also said that he knew a lot of folks were on phones, camera's etc and it was perfectly okay.

Dark blue sweater, spikey hair but shorter. Looked gorgeous. Frayed cuff of jeans. Something on both pockets.

5 men in first couple of rows. He was looking for the most miserable one and it turned out that it was that man's birthday.

He did an Indian Who's sorry now-mostly Quiana. Someone suggested a barbershop quartet- he said it was a great idea but there were only two people!

He said Quiana was sliding out of her shoes because she put lotion on the bottom of her feet.'

She definitely does NOT get the vibe that In My Life is a goodbye song- just a Thank you song. (Some folks were misinterpreting)

Good morning everyone.

I was lucky enough to have an OFC meet and greet for Cleveland last night. In fact there were a lucky 13 of us at the meet and greet last night. It was truly a wonderful experience. A friend of mine who had a meet and greet a few years ago told me that the Clay I would see at a meet and great would be this friendly, down-to-earth man who will put everyone in the room at ease. She was so right.

Clay came in in what looked like a gray V-neck sweater with a plaid shirt under the sweater.( sorry, I’m not sure of the sweater color because the lighting in the venue was dim or maybe that was just mood lighting?) He was wearing jeans. I am not sure if they were the same as the concert’s but I did notice they fit nicely. His hair was perfect. Stubble was present and lovely freckles lightly sprinkled his face.

One question I do remember being asked was about his opening choice of song “ Love Story”.
He said the song was to be on the TNT cd but it didn’t make the final cut. He said he really loved the song and what better way to start the concert then with a song with the words” Where do I begin……………”

I’ll let the other meet and greeters give their better and more detailed recaps.
I was very reluctant to accept my meet and greet at first but I am so very glad I did.

Good morning! What a great concert last night! Clay was so funny! We were in front row and I knew it was a bit too close to video. Have had neck problems lately and it is really painful today, what with holding the camera and trying to look almost straight up a lot of the time. At one point, around the third song, Clay caught me videotaping and his eyes got wide. Funny!  We had been at Pittsburgh the night before and Clay changed it up some last night. Love that he does that! After the show, I just wanted to come back and look at my clack. My friends wanted to go for ice cream! I didn't get back to the room until quite late. Checked the board and saw that people were waiting to see the opera clack so decided to check mine out and upload that one. Mack the Knife is on the end of it but I didn't realize that until I just watched the whole thing. I left the netbook on still uploading it, as I could see it was taking awhile. Have more videos but we are leaving for home early this morning. Will upload the rest when I get home.

Home from Cleveland, my hometown show. How can that man become more handsome with each and every day? I just had to laugh when he appeared with another gorgeous sweater, shirt, tie combo and those old tattered jeans(wore them all summer for the tour). His hair wias absolutely perfect... this coming from someone who loves the "Lord of the Manor" hair.

I loved the colors of the lighting they used as a backdrop for the stage. The blues were especially beautiful. I was blessed with a 4th row, dead center seat and that was the best for seeing Clay in all his spendor. The first row was rather too close to the stage. Did I say he was just indescribably beautiful toight? I have not seen Solitaire in this concert series yet as my two shows so far have been last night and tonight. I can say that "Both Sides Now" is a masterpiece and I would not give up him performing that song for any other!!

According to a friend, who ushered the show tonight, the ticket sales were 1027. It is what it is and I am really proud of Cleveland for showing him the love! My friend says that it has been a rough go to fill these theaters in this economic climate. Clay should not be upset or ashamed.

Now...off to bed. I am so tired from no sleep last night, running on pure adreneline and that buzz that only Clay Aiken can provide! Sweet dreams will follow me, I'm sure. How many ways can you say you love someone?!! It seemed like a two-way lovefest again tonight.

HOBBES

What a great evening. I don't usually write recaps and if you read all this, you'll understand why.

We pulled up to valet at Bricco restaurant, had a leisurely dinner and walked directly across the street to Playhouse Square. I recommend the valet service to anyone attending a Playhouse Square performance. It was $6 which is cheaper than most of the lots and decks where you park yourself.

Playhouse Square has five theaters. Clay was in the Palace Theatre. The State Theatre next door had the Royal Comedy Tour with various comedians (I use the term loosely). Anyway, some of the red-jacketed ushers were standing out on the sidewalk directing people to the right theatre. They didn’t have to look at tickets, they seemed to know who went where.

Despite the fact that Caper and I had tested it earlier in the week to make sure my 2G iPhone streamed, it decided not to cooperate last night, hence the traditional cellcert. My iPhone is “jailbroken,” which means it can be used on non-AT&T providers. My T-Mobile service wasn’t streaming fast enough. Sorry about that. I just read that Emerson is doing the cert tonight with an iPhone4. Should be great.

He looked gorgeous. His hair was spiked but looked soft, not the “Something About Mary” hair from early in the tour. He had on a dark blue sweater and a blue tie. He wore brown boots and his jeans were frayed at the back, probably from wearing them with sneakers.

The floor appeared about a third full. Clay joked that they were there (at the Palace) because they couldn’t get the Quicken Arena. He complained a few times about how cold it was in Cleveland, obviously forgetting the blizzard conditions he encountered in Cleveland several Decembers ago. Their bus then had to crawl its way to Detroit after the Cleveland concert. Anyone remember that day?

Quiana had on a new top, which had a giant blue flower on it. She said she looked like a Care Bear. He seemed to enjoy teasing her about it. She looked beautiful. I liked their version of Crying so much more than the Linda Eder one. Not that Linda isn’t a great singer, but Clay and Quiana have such a loving relationship that makes it more real. They sing it to each other instead of just two people sharing a stage and signing their parts.

When he did his bit complaining (jokingly) about cellcerters, he asked a woman who she was talking to and where she was. The certer was from Peru and the person receiving the cert, Mindy, was in Kansas. He asked if she could fly in all the way from Peru, why couldn’t Mindy show up from Kansas. Very cute.

My favorites were UM, "Build Me Up Buttercup", "Mack The Knife", and LS, but the opera was my favorite moment of the evening. It was amazing. The Indian version was great, too, with Quiana taking on most of it. Clay was laughing too hard at her dancing to add much to it. The auto-tune selection was a Kate Perry song and Clay and Quiana did all the moves. So cute.

When he was talking about the band members he said that Felix and his wife had an anniversary coming up on Feb. 28. Felix had told him that he and his wife had danced their first dance to Something About Us, so he is going to have them dance to it on stage on their anniversary.

Oh, one other tidbit…the monitors on the edge of the stage were big and blocked some of the view of those in the first row. When he brought his chair forward to sing, someone complained she couldn’t see him over the monitor, so he scooted his chair over a bit.

Afternoon!

Just back from Cleveland. I did not really watch anything but a couple of short clips before going to this concert. It is amazing and he opens the show with absolutely the right song. It starts low and builds to really emcompass the whole theater. Others have already said what a wonderful concert this is and it really is. Lots of men and they really seem to appreciate Clay. After my M&G I heard the ushers talking and saying that about 1200 seats were sold. I know there was more than 1/3rd of the main floor because when we were trying to get tickets we could only get the very back of the main floor and that was talking to poeple at the box office.

Anyway on to the M&G. I have only seen a partial recap so I will try to write more about it. He was very casual and very comfortable in this setting. It was not rushed at all, although at the beginning it looked like it might be very short because it took a little time to get people to start asking questions. Some of those were:
About his house. He does not have another place to go but indicated it indeed wants to be in Wake County. He said since he was going to be on the road they put it sup for sale and if it doesn't sell by the end of the tour he will take it off the market and go back there. There was some talk about his running for the school board and he indicated that would be a full time job. Obviously no one was encouraging him to do that.
I asked whether he might be going to Australia and Indonesia and he talked about the cd being released there and the PBS special airing in Australia and indicate he would like to go but the cd would have to sell decently to make it worthwhile for him to make the trip.
I also asked about doing a voice in an animated movie and he said he would be very interested if anything came his way.
He was asked if he would ever do a Christian cd and he said that for obvious reasons no majob label would ever sign him to do that kind of cd.
There was talk about the Gala and he will definitely be there. Also talk about the Golf outing and his position on it. At one point he took his phone out to look for some texts about this issue and someone said he didn't have a cover on his phone and he said he doesn't like covers. They said it might get scratched and he said no it wouldn't.

There was a little more and if anyone is interested and I can remember the rest I will come back later.

Was there any report about Clay's voice tonight? He really sounded hoarse when he talked last night.

Canflys video of Clay singing BSN is to die for. He is one good looking man.

He did sound a bit hoarse tonight.  There were some notes (more in the beginning of the concert) that you could tell he had problems hitting, but he was great.  He always, always, always puts on a great show.  I love him.

Thanks for your insight and glad you enjoyed it. Good to see you here. Haven't seen you in a long time.

My Cleveland recap: by cincy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got back a couple of hours ago from a fantastic time in Cleveland!!!!

The meet and greet was nice. Only 13 of us for this one (No PBS M&G's sold with those tickets) Clay has been eating healthy and it SHOWS!!! I had brought a picture for a fan who posts here CV for Clay to sign. After he signed everyone's item, we lined up for pictures. My friend's name was called first; mine second. After Mary snapped the shot, I said Thank You to Clay and he pulled me back and said we had to take our picture again because I had moved away too fast. So for the second time in a row, I got to keep my arm around Clay and he around me for a bit longer (same thing happened with the pic with Ruben, Clay and me....). And no, it wasn't on purpose either time, but feel free to try it if ya want!!!

My friend and I asked the same question....was he going to sing Misty tonight? He said he didn't know what was on the play list that night. I said, "I've got a quarter" and he laughed. The sweetest thing though was when the meet and greet was breaking up, Clay asked us to wait and he went up to the stage and checked a yellow sheet that had that night's play list and came and told us that Misty was on the list. What a sweet thing for him to do, huh? Still said our quarters weren't necessary.

Our front row seat was partially blocked by a speaker, so we opted to sit in the fourth row and gave our front row seats to a couple who were out on a date and sitting way back in Row W....the guy was tall and could see over the speaker. He was most appreciative (probably "got lucky" that night LOL!) We had another set of tickets in Row M Center that we also gave to another young couple who were sitting in Row V way to the side. It felt like Christmas giving these great seats away!!! And we were very happy with our seats, so it was good for all involved. We ended up sitting next to a fantastic couple whose daughter was the producer of the Tyra Banks show when Clay was on it. They told an interesting story about how the chemistry was so strong between Clay and Tyra that what was to be a half hour with Clay ended up with an hour show and Jada Pinkett Smith and someone else had to wait in the green room and then tape a totally separate show when Clay's taping was over. Their daughter now produces Jerseylicious and In the Soup.

Although the crowds seem smaller, the trade-off is that rather than all women, there were so many men and so many younger couples. The crowd was very receptive and Clay threw the love right back in its lap! He seems relaxed and happy, both onstage and off. Physically, more attractive than he has ever been, both on stage and off.

I'm glad to see you all got a cellcert and Scarlett was getting lots of clack. Personally enjoyedh Theme from Love Story which really showed off his ability to transitition from one key to another (on purposes that is....I change key at least 30 times in one song unintentionally). Other favorites for me were From Both Sides Now; his duet with Quiana of Crying, Q's Cry Me a River and Foggy Day in Londontown; Misty (of course); What Kind of Fool am I; and his closer, In My Life. Funny funny autotune of a Katy Perry song (California Girls???) and hilarious Who's Sorry Now sung in operatic style!!!!

I love Cleveland and my Cleveland friends!!!! I can't wait for us to reunite for more Clay fun!!!

Bringing my Cleveland M&G and concert recap over for those who may not have seen it

We shopped a bit, then had lunch at iHop. The wind was so bad that our mapquest directions to get back to the hotel flew out the car window and disappeared. Thankfully the waitress gave us an even better route to take home. We hung around the hotel room for a while chatting, then got changed, and when I couldn't stand the suspense anymore we headed over to the venue to wait for Jerome. cindilu2 and Claymatron came with me for some much needed moral support. Jerome arrived about 5:30 and started calling names and asking to see photo ID. I got chatting with another first-timer from CV, nekia. We decided to stick together and provide moral support for one another. There was one lady who said that her name had been misprinted on the email as 'Martin' instead of 'Marion' so Jerome took a bit of time to sort that out before we were all ready to go.

Jerome ushered us all in and told us there weren't really any rules, just no pictures at the M&G, although we were free to take pictures etc at the concert, just no flash. Then he left to get Clay and we sat there for a while talking amongst ourselves. A theatre employee came over and seemed angry at us for being in there, she said no one was allowed in there. We explained about Jerome and she said he had neglected to inform management. Thankfully he picked that moment to come back with Clay.

Getting to see Clay the person rather than Clay the performer was unreal. He is so animated, so at ease, so friendly, so open, so generous....we sat in two rows in the theatre and he stood in front of us in an aisle. When he first arrived he shook each of our hands and asked our names. I remembered mine, go figure! Then Mary collected things to sign while people started asking him questions. It was all a bit much at first and I missed a lot of his answers until I got my stuff organized. Some people were just asking the questions while others were raising their hands. I am a 'raise my hand' type, but others kept getting the opporunity. I thought maybe it wasn't meant to be but then he said 'ok one more question' and pointed at me. Thank you Clay. I am not assertive enough to just shout it out. Anyways I asked him how he came up with Love Story as the opening song on this tour. He said that it was considered for the album but didn't make the cut, so that is why he chose it. I told him I loved it and others chimed in to agree. As for the item I gave Mary to have autographed, I took the page out of one of my scrapbooks. Originally I was thinking of something more recent, but last night I realized that this concert was going to be in the same theatre that the 2003 Kissmass concert was in, so it seemed fitting to choose that page. On it, I have pictures of myself and my daughter modeling an Indians jersey (the one someone won in an auction from the AI tour) and I have my tickets and other BAF stuff, as well as some photos of Clay on stage. He looked at it for a minute (probably trying to figure out where to sign) then said that he was sorry but he had to sign on top of something. I said it's ok, just turn it over and there is more room on that side. So he did and signed it a second time. I think my favourite part of the whole thing was the picture. He lined everyone up and then we went up one by one as he motioned us to. It was just so cool to have that invitation to come forward, and he is so welcoming. I said 'hi' (great, eh?) and then while I posed and smiled I asked him if he remember that this was the Kissmas Concert theatre. He said he thought it might be but it seemed so much bigger then! Then I explained that that was why I had him sign that page, and he said "oh, ok, I get it now!" I hope the picture turns out, since I was talking the whole time. LOL.

After everyone's picture was done, someone asked Clay if the stage configuration was going to change at all, because the front row seats had obstructed views, due to the monitors. He went down and had a look and moved a few things around. Then he waved goodbye at us and was gone. Jerome left through a different exit and we all decided that we should show ourselves out. The venue staff told us that we could stay and sit down in our seats if we wanted to, however I still had no ticket so I left and found cindilu2 and Claymatron again. The venue would not allow anyone into the theatre to use the washrooms without a ticket, so we were stuck until carouselnut arrived with ours (thank you!). She finally got there about 7:10 and we ran in to pee.

We had seats in row J and row G. It was an awesome view, very centred. There were a lot of NJU and men in the audience. I had an older couple on my one side, and cindilu2 had another on her side. There were 2 guys and 2 girls in their late 20s behind us. One of the guys was very knowledgeable about both Clay and Broadway and was filling his friends in about both. It was cool to listen to him. Later, when Clay mentioned that Matt Metzger was in the house, we wondered if maybe that was him. Then the lights went down and Clay's voice came through the speakers and I was transported into another realm. His voice was perfection all night long. It was really hard to reconcile the larger-than-life performer on the stage with the down-to-earth guy from the M&G. I felt that the show was very tight, not a lot of inside jokes, which was probably a good thing considering the number of NJU in the audience. The applause and cat-calling was very loud between songs, with some partial ovations. It was a very appreciative crowd. The couples beside us weren't quite sure sometimes why we reacted the way we did to certain things (i.e. the shirt tug during Invisible). The opera was a hoot. I didn't know the autotune song but it is funny to hear him through that filter, and he gets such a kick out of doing it. He also gets a real kick out of Quiana's antics. She was really on and energetic, and Clay attributed that to her new blouse.

I can't go song by song but I know that Love Story, Crying, and UM were spectacular. But it wasn't only on the 'frying pan of talent' songs that he impressed me, he has such a range with his voice, he can go from loud, strong notes to soft, beautiful ones in an instant. His voice mesmerizes me. I don't think he messed up many lyrics at all...the only one I can think of was Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, when he went into the chorus too early and had to correct himself. From all the cellcerts and clack I've seen, I'd say this was the best concert vocally yet. I hope we get mime_fan audio. When the curtain came down after UM, both couples beside us got up to leave, and we told them there were two more songs to come. One couple sat back down, the other continued on their way. Oh well, their loss. I was thrilled with Both Sides Now and In My Life for the encore. I loved his explanations about the cellcerts and how he realizes that they (and clack) do not cause people to stay home from the shows. For the most part, I believe that is true. Clack sells tickets. There is nothing that can replace a live show. He bantered a bit with a woman who said she was from Peru, and she was cellcerting someone in Kansas. After In My Life, he gave a quick sign language thank you and walked off the stage.

After it was over, we headed out quickly to try to get a table at a nearby restaurant, because we were starving. However, it was closed, so we ended up going into a pizza place and taking an absolutely gooey and delicious pizza up to our room, where we looked at all of cindilu2's great pictures and squeeeeed until we were exhausted. We never heard a peep from the room beside us, but if they were in there, I'm sure they heard us. ;)

Addendum: I was definitely in a fog but a few things have come back to me, and I don't think this has been mentioned yet. Someone asked a question that I only heard parts of, but it was something about Clay's unique style of singing in this day and age, and comparing it to heirloom tomatoes and free range chickens....how 100 years ago all chicken roamed free, and all tomatoes would have been considered heirloom, but now they are considered special....it really made Clay laugh, and he said he thought it was sweet that she felt that way but he didn't really see it like that. Then he said something like "some days I feel like a free range chicken with it's head cut off!".
