On a night when several networks ran movies or specials in place of regular programming, CBS stayed the course and was rewarded with a ratings victory.

CBS averaged an 8.2 rating/13 share in primetime. The other Big Four networks were tightly bunched, with ABC in second at 6.9/11, followed by NBC, 6.6/11, and FOX, 6.4/10. The WB came in fifth at 2.6/4, while UPN averaged 2.1/3.

ABC scored a narrow victory among adults 18-49, averaging a 4.1 rating in the demographic. FOX and NBC tied for second at 4.0. CBS averaged 2.7, The WB 1.6 and UPN 1.2.

"Navy NCIS" won the 8 p.m. hour for CBS with an 8.5/14. ABC was second, averaging 6.8/11 for the hour with "8 Simple Rules," 7.4/12, and "I'm with Her," 6.2/10. "An American Idol Christmas" arrived early on FOX and posted a 6.5/10

• Lovingly patterned on Christmas shows of yore, "The Nick at Nite Holiday Special" (airing Friday) brings together stars of TV shows past (Martin Mull, Joyce DeWitt, Lou Rawls) and contemporary singers (Natalie Cole, Sarah McLachlan and, of course, Amy Grant) offering their renditions of deathless holiday songs. Cutest part: Clay Aiken sings "Little Drummer Boy" in a virtual duet with Bing Crosby (who's spliced in from a 1962 TV special).

Special Olympics New York athlete Sean O'Rourke of Bayshore, a 25-year-old who completed the half-marathon at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games (the World Games held in Dublin, Ireland featured more than 7,000 athletes with mental retardation from 150 countries), will cut the ribbon at 77th Street and Central Park West, officially starting a 5,000-person procession that will include 10 marching bands, 15 character balloons and performers such as singer Clay Aiken.

An American Idol Christmas

I hate listening to Christmas music before it's even Thanksgiving Day. Especially when it's bad. "This is one step above karaoke," my pal Troy groaned. "It really is." And for Troy — who's truly the kindest man I know — to call it out, y'all know it's like that. He only speaks truth. Sorry, but there's a reason most of these Idol finalists lost, you know? They ain't all like Clay. Not every one of them is a talented underdog who got the shaft.  Some of 'em didn't win because they just plain suck. Happy Holidays!

More Tickets Wanted to Aiken Graduation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A seven-ticket limit on a University of North Carolina-Charlotte graduation ceremony expected to involve "American Idol" star Clay Aiken has students protesting.

About 500 signed a petition Tuesday that calls the ticket policy "unfair" and asks university leaders to meet with students to consider alternatives.

"We're just not being treated right," said Cody Willets, the senior leading the effort.

University officials announced the ticket limit for the 3 p.m. Dec. 20 ceremony last week. Some students say they've already invited family and friends.

The university says it is limiting tickets because Aiken plans to attend and because of the large size of the graduating class. More than 1,000 students are eligible to graduate at the 3 p.m. ceremony.

Aiken, 24, is finishing an independent study course at UNCC now, his last requirement toward a Bachelor of Arts in special education.

December graduate Sherry Vadney said the school could schedule an extra graduation ceremony that day or allow students scheduled to graduate with Aiken to move to a morning ceremony that is already planned.

"We don't have a problem with Clay," Vadney said. "He's not requesting any special treatment. We just feel like there are other options."

Willets hopes to collect 1,000 more signatures Monday, when classes resume after Thanksgiving, and meet with university officials the next day.
