There's No Place Like Home: Aiken To Perform At Dec. 22 Hurricanes Game

UPDATED: 4:29 p.m. EST November 24, 2003

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Raleigh native and "American Idol" star Clay Aiken will perform the national anthem prior to the Carolina Hurricanes's game against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 22 at the RBC Center. In addition to the national anthem, Aiken will perform a song from his double platinum-selling "Measure of a Man" album, during the game's first intermission.

To mark Aiken's performance at the Dec. 22 Hurricanes game, there will be 200 suite tickets available via sale and an eBay auction that will include admission to the game, Aiken's performance, food and beverage, and a private meet-and-greet with Aiken in the suite.

In addition, exclusive Aiken autographed merchandise will be available at auction during the game at the Kids N' Community Foundation kiosk.

On Dec. 21, immediately following the Hurricanes' "Skate with the Canes" event, Aiken will host "Skate with Clay," where Aiken will skate with children, including those with disabilities. "Skate with Clay" will kick off with a news conference to announce a partnership between the Hurricanes' Kids N' Community Foundation and Aiken's Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

Two videos are up on the WRAL TV website - one is a report on the Christmas parade and the other is an on air interview conducted prior to the parade's start.  Scroll about halfway down the page to the video links.  These are left clickers, no need to download!

You know something? Every time I see an interview with Clay when he's like this...obviously comfortable and relaxed...really himself...it only makes me wish that I had come to know him BEFORE his fame...to be his friend and be lucky enough to have him as a part of my life.

His humor especially draws me to him like a magnet and I can imagine spending hour after hour just "hangin'" and having a blast!  :

Probably a good thing I'm not much younger....I'd be making a fool of myself trying to actually meet him and worm my way into his life!!! :

Move over Santa, Here comes Clay
By SARAH AVERY, Staff Writer

You can forgive Herb Council the mistaken notion that he was the one who set off a wild peal of female screams as he passed a certain section of Hillsborough Street along the route of Raleigh's Christmas parade.
Unfortunately, it wasn't Herb who triggered the eruption, although there are some, surely, who might argue that the Wake County commissioner has a certain matinee-idol charm.

But Herb had simply passed the scaffolding where Clay Aiken was sitting to offer TV commentary about the parade. And Herb happened to pass the stand -- as the Chickenman and many others had done in the same sort of confounding way -- at the precise moment that Clay swung his head slightly to the left.

This small turn of Clay's head, see, enabled the women and teenage girls standing down below, behind the scaffolding, to catch a glimpse of one side of Clay's face.

Hence, the screams.

As the grand marshal for the 59th annual Raleigh Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Greater Raleigh Merchant's Association, Clay was expected to attract an extra 10,000 spectators to the event Saturday.
He did that and more -- with some help from glorious weather. Organizers estimated as many as 100,000 spectators attended the annual event, which is the traditional kickoff of the holiday season.

For many, though, the parade attractions were only an excuse to see Clay, who drew fans from all over the country.  Fourteen-year-old twins Victoria and Caroline Nelson persuaded their parents to drive them to Raleigh from Bethesda, Md., just to see the "American Idol" crooner.
The girls love Clay. They love his music, which they listened to exclusively during the 4 1/2 hour drive down Friday night. They love his face, which appears in hundreds of magazine photographs they had cut and pasted onto poster board that said "We (little heart drawing) You Clay!" They love his hair, which, well, they love.

"This has been the longest week of my life," Victoria said, sighing, as she scanned Hillsborough Street for any sign of Clay's appearance. Then her dad called on the cell phone. He was down the street to scout for Clay at the start of the parade.

"Hello?" she answered. Silence. "He is?" Then she announced to the crowd around her -- women from New Jersey, and Delaware, and Tennessee -- "Clay's in a red convertible!"

The news passed quickly. Red convertible. Red convertible.

In an instant, he was in sight, and the screams went up, and it was each for her own. Some women who had been there since 1:30 a.m., sitting in folding chairs along the cold, dark sidewalk to assure the best seats, were pushed out of view by the clamoring masses eager for a glimpse of the one-time YMCA counselor and wedding singer.

And like that, he passed. A wave here. A wave there.

"I didn't see a thing," huffed Sonja Dechene, a member of the Claymate fan club from Graham. "We were the first ones here."

But all was not lost. As marching bands marched and tap dancers tapped and clowns clowned, Clay returned to the Hillsborough Street stand to provide TV commentary for WRAL, which broadcast the parade.

His reappearance set off a tsunami of screams. Randall Mason of Goldsboro rolled his eyes.  "I came to see the Christmas parade," he said. "You know, the marching bands, the Christmas music."

His girlfriend's 6-year-old daughter, Kris, had to ask, "What is Clay Aiken?"

She knew who Santa was, though. Remember him? Big guy. Red suit. Like always, he arrived at the end of the parade -- the star of the show.
