Show Description
Clay Aiken has never sounded more at home than he does singing the lushly arranged classics on his fifth studio album Tried and True - the international pop phenomenon's first album for Decca Records. The bulk of the album - which showcases Aiken's powerful tenor voice and considerable interpretive gifts - is made up of songs from the '50s and '60s that Aiken grew up listening to as a child in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tried and True feels like a king of homecoming, seven years after launching his career journey on American Idol. After winning over millions of viewers with his phenomenal voice and down-home charm, Aiken parlayed his success into full-fledged stardom. He has sold more than six million copies worldwide of his four albums: the double-platinum Measure of A Man (featuring the hits "Invisible" and "This is the Night"), 2004's platinum holiday CD Merry Christmas With Love, 2006's gold-certified A Thousand Different Ways, and 2008's On My Way Here - all of which debuted in the Top 5 on the Billboard chart. In addition, Aiken has launched nine live tours, made the New York Times best-seller list by co-authoring the inspirational memoir Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music In Your Life, executive produced and starred in his first TV special, A Clay Aiken Christmas, and won several American Music and Billboard Music Awards - all while donating a significant amount of his time to such charities as his own foundation, National Inclusion Project and acting as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. In January 2008, Aiken made his Broadway debut in the role of Sir Robin in the Tony Award-winning musical Monty Python's SPAMALOT.

Don't miss Clay Aiken live on stage in Charlotte, North Carolina!

Just got a text from luckiest1 in the PBS M&G. No autographs and a group photo of 10. Dang - luckiestdaughter was at this one with hopes of her first Clay up-close. She said there were more like 200 than 75 people.

She said he was great though - shook hands, asked names. Not much he can do with that many folks. Hopefully they get a great concert experience though! Hehehe, just got another text that reads:

Jerome said 'no squeezing the booty cheeks', and he meant it!! BWAHHHH!! I'm afraid to know what instigated that one!

Great meet and moo. Not sure if 200 but I was in group 9 so that is 90 and there seemed to be a good number of folks after us. Cute story. We told our first time friend to really LOOK at Clay. She was right beside him and was enjoying the view. Clay looked at her and pointed and said "the camera is that way!". LOL!

He is talking to a man in the front row- he is married to the lady on one side and has his arm around the lady on the other side.

He said this is love songs but he is sort of worried about this situation (paraphrasing)

C: "Hello Charlotte"

"Never had a M&G as large as that one back there. I swear 700 people"

Something about people in the front row

To someone in the audience: "You know her. You know her?"

"Snuggle up close if you're with someone you love"

"Who else came with a spouse, a partner or a loved one?"

"Love songs we're going to do for you"

"There's A Kind Of Hush"

I sware I am going to have to pay more attention.  I thought this started at 8:00.

I just watched the interview from Charlotte TV earlier today.  I love to hear him talk.

I'll bet there are some disappointed M & G folks.  The PBS Station really screwed up there.

Tiffany -- I read your recap and loved it--so glad you had a good time.  If you could sum it up in one word, what would that be?

C: "Anyone never been to a concert before?"

Front row fan: "Are you from Charlotte?"

Fan: "Georgia"

"Challenge to figure out how to use past songs to fit with big band/jazzy, lushly arranged. None I've recorded in past 8 years have that sound."

"We gave the challenge to Ben Cohn here; wanted to see what the songs would sound like with a jazz sound."

Lady Gaga and others were shouted out

Can't make it out. Loud laughter

Explains difference in recording process Andy Williams time versus now. Mentions 94 year old lady from last night's show.

C: "I have no idea why I just told that story."

Continues explaining recording process from back in the day and auto-tuning you can do now.

Demonstrating auto-tune of Suspicious Minds

Him singing the the acoustic and acapella of Whose Sorry Now was just awesome! I raised my hand cause I wanted to tell him to do Blues but he didn't see me. Had some good suggestions anyway but some repeats that he didn't want to do again.

I do hope you find a way to get to at least one show in this tour.

Me, too, MARILYN.   The timing just didn't work out with my medical scare.  ENJOY!!

I've finalized plans to see my BF in Fort Wayne, IN, one week from tonight!! ;D  I'm the only one who will be "flying" but I'll be with 5 of the RTM gals from Michigan and Ohio and I am so excited!  Flying in on Tuesday, flying home on Wednesday.  I have an extra heavy work load including an all day meeting in Green Bay prior to my trip!  But getting ready for a Clay concert will make me feel like Wonder Woman!  ;)

One of my Oconto friends offered to have her husband drive me to the airport in Green Bay early in the morning on the day of the concert.  He is always looking for something to do since he retired! ;)  He likes to go to the Casino . . . . so I will cause a scene if he doesn't let me give him a little $$$$$.

luckiest1:

Just back from the concert....Faye was there, and Clay's grandma was there, Diane & Emma Bubel, Audra (from LTS), Mona (who was Clay's replacement with Mike Bubel when he went to AI2) all were there, so it was really a hometown show. The first time he hasn't worn jeans (I think). They were dress pants, kind of beige or gray (hard to tell with the lights), the shoes/boots about the same colour. Turquoise sweater with weird, colourful cuffs over a white shirt and don't remember the colour of the tie.

This as a different set list than we got in Cleveland because we got "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" but not It's Impossible and Misty. Quiana flipped her songs around, and sang the London Town one first. When he launched into the jazzy CA medley he said it had gone over great in one venue, not so great in another, and we would be the deciding vote on whether or not he continued with it. After it was over, and we raved it up, he said ok, he'd keep it.

The autotune was a Ke$ha song. I am not convinced someone actually shouted out her name....I think sometimes if they are only giving him artists who actually can sing, he just pretends someone says her. She seems to get picked on a lot.

The "Who's Sorry Now" tonight was hilarious....first bluegrass, then doo-wop, then disco, then death metal/rock. Clay was moving tonight, he even imitated Quiana's Bollywood routine at one point. Sure hope there is clack, and then he ran off the stage because Q's 'death' scared him to death.

Crying and UM were magnificent today. Spot on, gorgeous notes he hit. He joked around a bit when he came back for the encore, even while the band kept playing the intro to "Both Sides Now". Then it went silent during the song, which he seems to feel more and more each time he sings it. He remarked that they are his favourite lyrics. There hadn't been much obvious clacking in the venue, because security was pretty strict and we were told no photography of any kind was allowed (by an usher). However he talked about it before "In My Life" and pointed someone out (I assume Scarlett?) He also said that flashes hurt his eyes (referring to other concerts, not this one). And didn't people take that as an invitation to start flashing during the song. Sometimes you just have to wonder how stupid people can really be. He talked a lot about Charlotte and AI and different things tonight, at one point he asked Felix how he was doing and said something like 'live with it, sometimes I just like to talk'.

Oh and before "In My Life", after he told us how much he loved and appreciated us he plugged Greenville quite a few times, and said that if you weren't in Greenville tomorrow night, you were out of the will.

more:

Audra was actually sitting directly behind us, but I didn't want to turn around and stare so didn't really get a look at her. It was so cute because he talked tonight to quite a few people who said this was their first Clay Aiken concert....one group of three sisters sitting in the front row, from Georgia, IIRC. So when he was getting ready to talk about clack and cellcerts, etc, he said this is to explain to the people like Mona and Audra who haven't witnessed this insanity before, and also for the first-timers (and added 'are you scared yet?'). Hee.

Yes, the M&G certainly left something to be desired, and I am sure many went away disappointed, but everyone I spoke to was upset with PBS, who totally oversold the thing. I don't think Clay had any option, really. There was no physical way he could have done autographs and individual pictures.

Oh, when he first took the stage tonight, he said "I think I met almost every one of you at the M&G earlier. There had to be about 700 of you!"  He said something like I'm tired but I think I still have something left. He was in good spirits about the whole thing.

siclayfan:

Just trying to catch up a little--I'm hopelessly behind. I've been travelling a lot the last couple of weeks  and the couple of days I've been home I have so much to do.

I just read he did Bluegrass tonight. Shucks I was the first person he called on last night. I asked for bluegrass and he passed over it. I know he did it once before but haven't gotten around to seeing it. I adore his "Little Star of Bethlehem". Maybe he wanted to save it tonight for his Grandma. With my usual coolness when he said the person in red as he looked in my direction I had to look down to see what I was wearing--yup it was red!!

My six concerts have been gloriously delightful. I swear each succeeding one that I have seen has been better than the last.. It was so nice last night actually being able to get to a concert not much more than an hour from my home. It seems like it's been a long time since I've been able to do that.

There were so many things I loved about last night. As always the singing was wonderful. His speaking voice definitely wasn't as raspy as it was in CT. The day off was good for him.

I loved how he sat on the edge of the stage and proceeded to shake hands with the surrounding fans and ask their names. His knees were pretty much in one lady's face for a couple of songs--and he actually felt sorry for her--foolish man.

When something bothers him he sure lets you know it. I lost count of how many times he brought up the lack of spotlights.

I loved his interaction the the 94 year old birthday lady and that he said he wanted a picture with her and the 13 year old birthday girl. I wish we'd get to see that picture.

He seemed to be even more connected to the audience last night than usual. His introductions of his band are always fun. I love his relationship with Quiana. Honestly I was a little worried about the Crying duet being done with Quiana--it was so beautiful with Casey this summer. Silly me to have any doubts--the "love" they have for each other shines through and it's very tender.

He's just so darn comfortable up on that stage--he so belongs up there. Clay-- I'm old, please don't wait too long to get up there again after this tour.

I will have my last two concerts this weekend and will undoubtedly be in a funk--I hate that my "escape from reality" trips will be over for the time being. I've been blessed to be able to get to so many but as we always say --you can never have enough Clay Aiken!!! I haven't done much clack viewing so I will have lots to look forward to next week.

Just hoping we learn about some of those "hot irons" soon

KAREN EH

Back at the hotel and that bed over there wants me, I can tell…but…I have to vent a moment, before sleep, about the irony of great lighting, a severe no pictures warning, and an aisle seat in full view of the second biggest guy in the venue with a lanyard around his neck, after Jerome. I asked about it twice, debated the point that this probably didn’t come from Clay’s people (because….well…I just know these things, eh?) and I still was told absolutely no pictures of any kind….except for that official guy standing over there by the side door. One of the ushers told me that these were the instructions they were given, and that there were extra people in the hall who were there specifically to watch out for us. Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot? I gave up. My camera remained in my bag all night, and it was okay, in the end, because I got to enjoy those hip shimmies, semi-shiny pants, and twisty-foot moves so much better that way. Oh…..but the dang lighting!! ‘Twas just criminal, let me tell ya’

Charlotte was my second concert. I was in Baltimore last night with my Mom (a concert virgin…but not THE concert virgin). We both loved the wacky intimacy of that show….a spotlight would have been nice, however. I wonder if I should get my "Ott" lights out of storage for times likes that....gosh! I bet Costco has something! It was seriously dark in the Kraushaar Auditorium….and the Belk was bathed in brilliant light (note to self: give it up already…you had a great time.)

The new gray pants are very nice. They have some sheen and fit pretty darn good. What I could see of the tie from my 5th row aisle seat, it looked to sort of match the olive green print. The turquoise sweater looked quite yummy.

I had bought a PBS meet and greet but the ticket was sent to Houston….a place I haven’t been for quite some time. It should be waiting for me when I get back to Denmark…if it got put into my husband’s inter-office mail bag. I considered having someone in the Houston office retrieve it, and Fed Ex it to me, but I abandoned the idea. It was getting a little complicated since I had already left Denmark when it arrived in Texas. Good thing, I did…I wouldn’t have made it anyway. Our drive from Baltimore took almost 9 hours due to heavy morning traffic and frequent coffee stops. Yay! For only having to drive an hour and a half tomorrow. Greenville will be my last concert of this tour (*sniff*). I am enjoying the live version of these songs…a lot….but I have to go home. We are moving again, this time to Abu Dhabi. This one's going to take some care and attention.

I hope, hope, hope there is no clack down tomorrow night. I am the fandom’s worst stealth photographer. Come to think of it, I have other problems…..I almost got nothing last night because I took the memory card out of the camera and left for the theater with it still stuck into my laptop. Luckily, earlier that day, I had discovered the memory card from another camera stuck in that very same slot in the very same laptop, and I thought to put it in my purse. Perhaps a trip to Best Buy is a good idea.

I can empathize with Brightstar about the ones that got away tonight. There really were some luscious opportunities! By the time the last couple of songs came along and people began to take out their cameras around me, I was in such a fog I wouldn't have been able to tell the lens cap from a hockey puck. The camera stayed where it was and I left with a head full of beautiful memories (albeit a very heavy purse for nothing).

BRIGHTSTAR:

Back from the concert. Gah!! I just love this tour. He gets more and more beautiful and so do the songs. It was the first time I heard "Both Sides Now" on tour, and it was incredibly beautiful. Gentle, tender, poignant, lovely. He was funny, gorgeous, and oh so entertaining. I think he's loving this tour too.

I loved his outfit. Loved. The sweater was a beautiful shade, the tie was a green print (could only see the very top), the shirt cuffs were a quirky print, and the pants were a lovely gray, with a slight shine (to my eyes) and their draping was breathtaking. They flowed as he moved and were a show of their own.

The security staff were unmerciful. I was in second row and didn't even try to take a picture for the first several songs. Then I snapped one pic furtively. Then I took one every once in a while, noting dozens of perfect poses and angles that I didn't get. The last part of the show I took more, and just snapped away during the last 2 songs. I think some of them are fairly good, but I could have gotten some awesome ones if I didn't have to be so careful.

I felt badly for Clay to have sooooo many folks at the PBS m & g. Impossible to really satisfy folks, so they did the best they could. At least I got to shake his hand!

Before he gave the "mandate" to attend Greenville, he was getting hoarse and said he felt sorry for those going to Greenville. Said it would be a mess.

There was a young couple beside me who raised their hands to say it was their first concert. The guy suggested the rock category, and was sad when Clay at first acted like he wasn't going to do it, then perked up when he did. He laughed quite a bit. They held hands most of the show, and I could tell they enjoyed it. (I didn't talk to them though).

Did I say I loved this tour? Two hours of perfection--we laugh, get misty, clap, sway, and often just look and listen in amazement, hardly able to believe we are hearing such aural beauty.

So my last one is tomorrow. Can't wait on one hand and don't want it to get here on the other. Last shows are so bittersweet.

COTTON

Wow! What a great concert!
Except for the damed Clack POlice!
They were horrid!

I thought Clay's pants were "taupish" not gray. He looked YUMMY!
They were some NICE pants. A-hem!
I have some pics, but I was in the "balcony" so not hi-res.

I can say that Clay was wonderful tonight!
The opening. . .
I do NOT like Love Story. Just do not.

So - how is it that when the curtain is still down. The house is dark.
And that . . .
naked Voice Clay . . .
could absolutely SLAY me with Love Story??!!!

He voice - cutting through the dark theater - over the detritus of the day - can just stop your heart.

Beautiful!

Then again - at the end - Naked Voice Clay singing In My Life - does it again!

He fills the auditorium.
He fills my ears.
He fills my heart.

I love him.
I love him and Quiana.

This music was made for Clay.

*sigh*

Nitey Nite - heading to Greenville tomorrow.Don't know when I'll get pics posted!

I have never seen Clay look more gorgeous than he did last night. His outfit ranks up there with the tops of all time for him. He was just beautiful. He had on perfectly fitting taupe pants with a very faint ribbing to them, a medium aqua colored sweater (v-neck, with no banding/ribbing on the bottom)...it made him look so lean and the color was just fantastic). He had on a white shirt with the cuffs turned up. The lining of the cuffs was a print of yellow, green, red/pink. Really cool looking against the sweater. He also had a moss green tie and striped socks along with the shoes we have been seeing. He looked every bit a young, rich star...PERFECT.

As for the show, it was wonderful. I can.not.wait. for my pit row seats tonight! I was in the "cattle call" M&G and I had so much fun. Clay was so totally in charge during that M&G, but obviously in a "git her done" mode, which was totally understandable. There were 150 people in our M&G alone, not to mention the others that he had. I'm pretty sure he M&G'ed about 250 people total...CRAZY. When he came behind our group for the picture he stood behind Georgialina and I. I made sure to lean back just a tad and I can still feel the heat of his chest on my back... *takes a moment*. I told Georgialina that the joke will be on me today if I get the picture from PBS and find out I was leaning up against a fan instead  . In some strange way I almost enjoyed my M&G yesterday more than my OFC one. Because I LOVE seeing Clay as the star and in "boss" mode...it just does something to me.....strange, but true.

What can I say, I just love Clay Aiken. The concert last night was awesome. He is just so in his element on that stage. His voice was out of this world good, and his humor kept us in stitches. We had great seats, box next to the stage. I was just in heaven. I took a good friend who is a casual fan and she loved the show. Raved in the car all the way home. Our Meet & Moo was good as well. Sure I was a little disappointed that I didn't get an individual pic with him but I completely understand why. He did put his arm around my back for the group pic. I had gone to Atlanta so I wasn't prepared for the emotional response I had to UM. It was DH and mine "song", my eyes filled with tears toward the end and just for a second I felt as if DH was sittings there with me.
This show is just soooo good. The mix up of songs, everything. The man surely knows how to plan a tour to keep the show fresh and fun. One thing my friend said I loved was," he reminds me of Johnny Carson", he can turn anything into humor". It was my last show of the tour but oh what fun it has been.

This will make you laugh!

He was in quite a pissy mood during the picture taking, some 100 people, it seems, because PBS messed up, he fussed at the folks in our group, well I don't blame him there. I did man-handle my daughter out of the way, how dare she get next to my BF, what was she thinking. He says 'dont claw me' to me when I dove in between him and her. I didn't have a chance to explain she was my daughter. He probably thought I was so rude. Gosh, if I hadn't been aggressive I would have lost my chance to hug him. She just didn't get the urgency/need I had to be close to him. He seemed oblivious to my intent, just wanting to get this picture group done and move onto the next. I think everyone there was disappointed we didn't warrant a one-on-one pic. Both of us had our little speeches rehearsed too. We did each get to shake hands and tell him our names. He had the OFC and auction winners after us so 10 pix of 10 folks for our group still takes time. And of course nothing signed. I bet the PBS thing never happens again! Reality check, he might be my ‘one and only’ but he doesn’t know me from Adam (or Eve). Gosh, at least he didn't call over Jerome and put me on the 'list'. Oh, he was wearing the same outfit from Baltimore - hrmmph, and at the TV studio, must have slept in it, do you think?

I hesitate to even attempt to write this as I mostly lurk here but thought I would write a brief recap of my experience at the Charlotte concert. I live in Winston-Salem and drove down to Charlotte alone, much to my daughter's dismay, as she thinks a 76 year old woman should not go on a road trip alone. I've been following Clay since 2003 and back in the day I had several friends who were Clay fans that lived in the area. We would all travel to his concerts together and it was so much fun. However, one friend moved away and the others are no longer fans because of Clay's sexual orientation--their loss. Anyway, there was no way I was going to miss this concert. I also had the Meet and Greet. I was disappointed it turned out as it did but there really was nothing Clay could do. The station just sold too many M&G tickets. The PBS lady divided us into groups of 10 and I was in the first group. We took our place for the picture following the instructions from the photographer. A space was left in the front row for Clay. We waited a few minutes and then Jerome came out and said "everyone knows the rules, right?" A couple of people said "no--this is our first M&G." Then Jerome said "no touchy, feely, no cameras, no camcorders." In a few minutes Clay came out from behind a curtain on the right of us. I could not tell you what he was wearing because as soon as I saw him the "Aiken fog" set in. He was very cordial, greeted each person with a handshake, asked their name and then repeated their name. Then he posed in the center for the picture. Then we were ushered out of the room. There were about three groups of 10 waiting inside the room and a line of people that stretched out the door, up the steps on to the street for what looked like about 1/2 block.

While waiting for the M&G I struck up conversions with some other fans in my group who I now consider my new friends. There was a very nice NJU couple. I believe it was their first time seeing Clay. Also, there were two ladies who are Clay fans and one is a member of CV. After the M&G we were discussing where we could get a bite to eat before the concert and saw a little cafe right down the street so we went there. It was such fun to meet new friends and I appreciate so much that they included me so I did not have to eat alone.

The concert was awesome! I was in center orchestra, row P, and had a good view of the stage; however, there were several empty seats around me and throughout the auditorium which made me very sad. One of the ladies, Sandra, I met at the M&G was seated right across from me. There were four empty seats beside of me so when the concert started she moved over and sat with me. It was great fun to have someone to eeeeeee with! I loved Clay's outfit and he looked so relaxed and happy. As many have said there is just no comparison to seeing Clay live. What a wonderful entertainer he is! And last night he seemed so appreciative of his fans. I may not be recalling this exactly but when he was explaining about the cellcerts and clack and about there being empty seats, he said something to the effect that he didn't mind the cellcerts and the clack because in spite of all of that we kept coming to his concerts and had stuck with him for 8 years. I felt a tinge of sadness for it almost sounded like he was saying "goodbye." I hope he has gained more fans with this tour and that he never stops touring. Last night was my only concert. I wish so much I could have gone to Greenville but my husband has serious health problems and I just couldn't be away from him that long.

To my new friends, Jennie (shenwren), Sandra, Sheila and Troy, "thank you" for letting me hang out with you. You made my evening so much more enjoyable than it would have been. I hope we can meet again at the next Clay concert and may there be many, many more in the future.

He’s like the energizer bunny – dashing about the stage bantering at high speed. It was exhausting trying to keep your brain pinpointed on his delivery. Gracious, he’s quick-witted. Loved he made fun of loads of people and interacted with the whole theatre. All night long! He’s remembering all the new bits at each concert and then adding to them. That amazes me.

So we got a brand new set of duds, quite surprised me to see him in slacks as opposed to torn or holey jeans. Yeah, they were taupe, had a sheen to them, same color as his shoes.

As you all know, he goes from high octane tunes, to lush, tear-jerking ballads. It’s hard to keep the tears in check so you can focus on him. Really hard.

There never was a singer/entertainer that could rivet (moment) my attention for 2 hours like Clay. He spreads his magic dust around and captures our hearts, just like that. Plus, of course, he’s so handsome and sexy. Phew, WOW, and goodness gracious me.

No need for pyrotechnics, fancy costumes, flashing lights, and a crowded stage with insignificant dancers. Just pure Clay music in an intimate setting with a great band. Enough said.

Thanks Marilyn for your great reports. Sounded like a great show. Looking forward to Sunny and Michelle's reviews. Thanks Barb and Barb for joining us as always and you are welcome. See you tomorrow from Greenville, SC.

Uh, you really don't want my review.  :-\

It's whatever you want to do Michelle. I respect your opinion. :) I saw what you said on Facebook. That is very disappointing about the Meet and Greets and how much you spend for a handshake and group pic. Hope it can be better for you and Sunny on Sunday and you can get a pic with just Clay next time. And sorry you didn't care for the songs he sang in concert. Even though most of them are slow songs if you don't care for them you can't deny how wonderful his voice sounds anyway. That's the important thing. ;)

will give you a small recap of my Charlotte meet and moo.

As you know, we were divided into groups of about 10 and had pics made. When they were lining us up I went to the back as I am taller. Clay came up and started shaking hands. He reached through the first 2 rows and looked at the girl in front of me, then looked at me, and said,Are you two related?" we both said no and he said,"y'all have such pretty eyes!" then he ran around the back of the group and to where I was standing, and grabbed me around the waist and pulled me in tight! I figured since he was holding me, I would hold him too! I gently put my hand around his waist and his sweater was soo soft. Let me tell you, I was one happy girl! I just love this man more than I thought I ever could!

Michelle, I am so sorry you had a horrible meet and greet. I believe it was the PBS stations fault- and I think they also oversold the Glenside ones. Then they had the auction ones, the fan club ones, and I think even UNC did something. Someone said Clay was surprised by how many- I guess they dont tell him until he gets there. You are absolutely right it is horrible to pay so much money for such a quickie. Someone said that they only paid $75 for their meet and greet. I know some of the auction ones went for quite a bit more than that.

But the choice of songs was known ahead of time- he is touring supporting the album and the PBS special. I am so sorry you didnt like them, but I think we all knew that most of them would be slow. I hope that whatever his next non Christmas album is, he peps it up a bit. The poll on TC facebook shows that most people liked MOAM and On My Way Here better, so hopefully he will pay attention to that.

Oh geez I see that even radio stations had contest meet and greet winners. He might as well M&G with the whole danged audience!!

Ladies, I am not good at recaps but I will give it a try.

My friend and I arrived in Charlotte around 1:00 pm yesterday and checked in our hotel. We went and grabbed a bite to eat and then went to the venue to pick up our front row center seats which came with the charity meet and greet I won only to find that our seats were in the 2nd row off the the right. I questioned them and was told that's what Clay's people had left with them. When we went back to the venue at 6:15 to meet up for the meet and greet the other charity winner was there and she was questioning Mary about the seats as they were right next to ours. Mary explained that the venue had sold our front row center seats and had contacted the buyers and tried to buy them back but of course they couldn't. I mean, who wouldn't want front row center seats? Mary then told us 4 to hang around after the meet and greet and she would take us in the venue and show us the seats and another option she had.

On to the meet and greet. The 9 of us were taken back and Jerome came in and arranged 9 chairs in sort of a semi-circle with Clay facing us. He said he'd be back soon. We must have looked like a calm group because he didn't mention any rules...only said we could ask him anything we wanted, not that he would answer but no question was off limits. Jerome left to get Clay and about 5 minutes later Jerome came through the door with Clay behind him. (The first thing I noticed was the hair! Sticking up like he'd stuck his finger in a light socket! HAHA) One of the ladies got out of her seat to ask Jerome a question and during this time Clay went around the semi-circle shaking our hands and asking our names. He sat down when he was done and by this time the lady was sitting back down in her seat. Someone mentioned he missed her and he snarked..."Well, she should have been in her seat!" It was actually pretty funny. We took our things out for Mary to give to Clay to autograph while we were all chatting. Everyone who told me he puts you right at ease was so right! He's like an old friend...chatty, chatty. The very first thing he said when he sat down was that he was absolutely exhausted. He did look tired. I'll probably remember more later but here's some of the conversation...

He was asked by one lady how he stayed in shape. He laughed loudly and said he doesn't. He said he does nothing. She told him he should try Pilates and he said he had during Spamalot but the girl who worked with him didn't do it on a strict schedule. He said she'd come a couple of days in a row and then miss 2 or 3 so he didn't think it did him much good. He also said some days she'd come in and ask did he just want to be stretched that day and he'd say yes. And some days she'd come and he'd tell her right off the bat...just stretch me today. When he said that he rared back in the chair...stretching out those long arms and legs. Too cute. My friend said that Clay said he weighs 184 pounds. I must have been in a fog because I missed that.

We talked about his socks. They matched and he said he hadn't changed them. They were the same ones he'd worn the previous day and I noticed he was still wearing the same ones during the show.

I asked him if he'd consider doing some video blogs at the OFC and he said no. He can't commit to doing regular blogs much less video blogging.

For some reason he didn't personalize the autographs but when he signed the pillow I took him to sign for Mark I asked him if he would and he said of course. I was able to tell him a little about Mark and one of the other meet and greet winners also has a child with disabilities and thanked him for the work the project does. He of course said he didn't invent inclusion but thanked her.

Another older lady had an old bookmark from a Christmas tour that was half chewed up that she wanted signed. Of course he questioned her about it and found out it was her favorite possession. Her dog had gotten ahold of it and chewed it up and then she mentioned she had had to put the dog down last week and she got very teary which got several in the group teary. Clay was so sweet to her.

One lady asked if he'd ever sing "Some Enchanted Evening." It was her and her husband's song and he passed away last year. He said it was a good song and he might consider doing it sometime.

Not a single person in our meet and greet had ever met him before. He told one lady he thought he recognized her but she said, no, they'd never met. THEN he pointed to me and said, "I think I recognize you." I told him I'd tell him why. At the gala back in October I had to use the restroom and had to walk right by Clay at his table. When I got near the table Clay looked up and our eyes met. That's what I told him..."You looked up and we locked eyes." He was so cute...put his hand on his heart like...be still my heart. He's a doll y'all.

He pointed to my friend and a couple of more and said they hadn't said anything. My friend said she was a virgin...new to all this, had never been to a show or anything. He told her he hoped she wasn't scared off. He spoke to her several times during the show, asking her once if she was ready to get up and leave yet. She really, really enjoyed it. She said she'd definitely go again. And she talked about how sweet and funny he is.

He was asked what books he read to Parker and of course he said he didn't discuss Parker but he would say there's a lot of Dr. Seuss in his house.

He said we asked good questions and he got tired of the same ones over and over again. He also said that's the reason he quit answered questions at the OFC. Same ones over and over...and some ridiculous.

Picture time....My friend and I were the last 2 to get ours made. I went first. Lordy that man is solid! And he's not thin, not fat, just right. After the picture he gave me a big hug. He's a great hugger! Anita stepped up and asked him if for her picture would he do one of the 3 of us together. He said sure! So we made a juicy Clay sandwich!

That's the extent of my memory right now. I'm running on 3 hours sleep and had to drive 200 miles home today. I'm tired!

Oh, and Mary took us in the venue and the other option was 4th row center. We kept the 2nd row and they were still pretty good seats. I still couldn't help but be a little disappointed but it wasn't Clay's fault and it wasn't his "people's" fault. Mary did ask if we were going to another show but unfortunately it was our only one.

If I remember more I'll post it at a later time.

Oh, and perma, the photo you sent me autographed beautifully! I took a silver marker like you said but he came prepared!

I'll post pictures of the autographed items later. I've got some cleaning up to do around here...leaving 3 guys home alone is not smart!

ETA: I made several errors so you may want to reread. I meant it WASN'T Clay's fault about the tickets!

Charlotte recap:

I was at the M & M (Moo) cattle call with a bunch of people lined up it seemed -- around the block. They (the PBS staff) checked us in with these words, group picture with Clay, no signings of anything, no questions. I was so disappointed as I'm think everyone was -- PBS seriously messed up, IMO. Each group was given a number (to later get our pics) then clumped together in sets of 10 people. While one group was getting their pic taken, Mary moved our group to a diff. spot in this big room. Clay came by shaking our hands, asked our names and ran around behind our group and stood between a friend of mine & myself. Very, very nice. He looked great -- as others have described: jeans, college sweatshirt (have no idea which one), sneakers -- hair a little spikey. He looked like a college student himself. Clean shaven.

Concert: Seat: Row N, center -- his look on stage last night was just about the best look I've seen on him. Turquoise shirt, printed cuffs turn back & pushed up, white shirt, great looking pants, same shoes. He sounds amazing as only Clay can sound. I love the jazzy-medley -- so good to hear those songs although I hope he will sing them again sometime as he sang them before. Fun joking with the audience as he walked back & forth across the stage. UM always takes my breath away. BSN is just so touching and Clay sings it with such feeling -- his chat about the fans and the dedication of IML makes me want to cry -- so touching also, but in a different way. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and will be in Greenville tonight. Can't wait to experience that Clay concert feeling one more time.

I can't bare to think of him not touring for a while. This man owns the stage -- he sings like no other -- somebody give this guy an outlet for all that talent.

Quiana sounded wonderful -- my favorite is Cry Me a River. I love all the guys on the stage making their wonderful music for Clay. Hard to believe all that sound is coming from only 4 guys their drums, guitars, and keyboard with the unique use of 2 computers & 4 iPADS. They sound so good!

Ushers were up and down the aisles all night -- it was very distracting. Evidently the word that it was okay to take pics & vids either didn't reach them or it was a venue policy and Clay had no control. But all those ushers moving around was really very disruptive.

Did I say how good he looked? Hope we get some good pics from someone who was not spotted and chastised or cameras taken away.

Hee, thanks. Guess I didn't do a very good job introducing myself for my first post ;) I feel like I might have had an account here back in the fandom glory days or something, I've certainly been a Clay fan since day one!

The PBS M&G, while admittedly pretty disappointing, was handled probably as well as it could have been with all those people. And even though it's a group shot and not the individual one I think we all were hoping for, I'm still dying to see it! I can't believe I haven't come across any other clamoring fans in my Internet scouring ;)

That was OUTRAGEOUS. The ushers' hovering was infinitely more distracting than people who wanted to take non flash pictures. Seeing them swarming the whole night was VERY irritating.

In regards to the meet and greet at Blumenthal, I was totally disappointed!!!  This was my first meet and greet, and from this experience I do not plan to waste my time and money on another.  I waited at least 45 min. to shake his hand and get a group picture made in about a minute's time.  It was the most expensive handshake that I have ever had.  It was definitely like being shoved through like a herd of cattle.  I was totally disappointed since I have attended all of Clay's tours since 2003, and I was finally attending a meet and greet.  When I contacted people from WTVI, they blamed Clay's handlers.  I only received my tickets about 1 1/2 weeks before the concert, and I figured that this was done to prevent any selling on ebay.  If I had wanted to sell my tickets for the concert, no one would have purchased them on ebay due to the poor location.  I truly enjoyed the March 2010 concert in Raleigh and the Biltmore concert with Ruben in July 2010.  My afternoon and evening at Blumenthal were disappointing.  I also brought my daughter to the meet and greet and concert, and she could barely stay awake with all of those slow ballads.  Why can't Clay sing more upbeat songs?  My daughter's favorite part of the show was when Clay would sing songs with a variation.  The bluegrass and rock variations added some spunk.  It saddens me that this might be Clay's last tour, but there are empty seats at these venues.

I am confused. Clays Tried and True CD is SLOW LOve songs. Every interview and piece has mentioned the love songs. The PBS Special was slow love songs.

This tour is in support of slow Love songs- the Tried and True CD. A couple of exceptions were Buttercup and Suspicious Minds.

The Timeless Tour in the summer of 2010 was a lot livelier. Thats because they were doing different songs through the years.

This tour has never been advertised as being anything different. However, if you have not read anything on line, or seen/read any interviews,or purchased the CD,  I can understand why you would be disappointed.  This is a different direction than the last album, On My Way Here, which was never supported by much promo or which never had a tour to support it.

Who knows what future direction Clay will go in? I myself am intrigued by whatever comes our way-but others may not wish to follow. Its all personal preference, and all of us are entitled to our opinions.

charlotte49erclaymate-  How did you feel about any of his other concerts that you have seen? I am sorry you were disappointed. I did want to say that the tickets did not come from Clay's team, they came from the venue. I got tickets for the Sunday concert in PA. I ordered them a loooong time ago, and I was constantly emailing the PBS station to find out where they were. The VENUE sent the tickets, and they did not receive them until last week. I finally got the tickets on Tuesday of this week. Its going to be another cattle call, because PBS oversold. Evidently its the venue that handles the ticket donations to PBS, and PBS allowed far to many meet and greets in several concerts. You can bet your life I will not order tickets through PBS ever again.

So I got an email back from someone at WTVI about when we could expect our pictures ...

"We are deciding which way will be best for us to deliver these photos to our members. I will be sending out an email early next week to inform you of this process. "

Aaaaah I don't think they realize how long that calculates into fangirl wait time ;)

CLAYNICIAN
Anyway, as for the Greenville M&G, he looked wonderful and sat on the stage directly in front of me! I have to admit it was a little hard to focus on the conversation. I had a cute story planned to share with him, but it was a little silly and nobody was joking around. Our group was so quiet and everything said was rather serious, so I never got up the nerve to interject my bit. I'm a chicken, I guess, but hey, maybe next time (yeah, that's a laugh!). Here's what I remember of the conversation - He was impressed with how pretty Greenville is and the # of really nice theaters and venues for that size town. He said his house is "kind of" on the market. When asked how that is possible, he said he has it on the market while he's away and will take it off when he gets back. (Huh? I still don't get that one). He did mention that he intends to be involved in the Wake County situation, but didn't say how specifically. When asked if he'd like to be in politics, he said he'd enjoy doing the job itself, but would hate the "politic-ing", like calling people to ask for money.

Now, he definitely said that at this time he has no career plans for the rest of the year. He did not use the term "irons in the fire" that I can remember, so don't analyze too closely what that might mean. He said that if Broadway brought him a good offer he'd consider doing it, but nothing is currently planned. Sorry. You'll have to decide for yourself how depressed to be over that one. I guess it's possible he could be expecting an offer (that's what I'm holding onto), but he definitely spoke as if he's waiting for offers to come in. Sounds like I have a little time to build up that NYC travel fund.

Overall it was great experience getting to hear him talk a little, and of course getting an autograph and picture (I probably will look stupid in this one!). I hope everyone gets a chance for one of these. Don't give up - I honestly have never won anything. Well, OK, I once won a book about copyright laws as a door prize at a music conference - but who the hell wants that, lol!
