Clay Goes No. 1!
October 22, 2003

CLAY AIKEN's CD, Measure of a Man, has sold over 600,000 copies in its first week -- making it the biggest first week for a debut solo artist in 10 years and making it No. 1 on the Billboard chart!

Legendary record producer CLIVE DAVIS surprised Aiken on "GMA" and presented him with a plaque that is double platinum!

The flattered Aiken expressed his gratitude: "Every single day and every single thing that happens to me gets bigger and better than the last thing!"

"It's an extraordinary thing when the public really has not only loved his music," says Davis, "But has rushed out at these unprecedented numbers to want to own his CD."

"I'm baffled at why people are so interested," says the humble Aiken. "But it's fun to be me right now!"

The night before the release of Man, thousands of fans held parties in Clay's honor, and at the stroke of midnight on October 14th, they bombarded record stores to buy his album. The goal of the fans attending the 90 parties was to make their favorite singer's album go platinum in one day -- and it's now clear their efforts weren't in vain! The album's first single is "Invincible,"[sic] which Clay calls a "catchy" tune. (Edit - The song is 'Invisible' Hello!)

All this is something to brag about, keeping in mind that the former "American Idol" contender only came in second in the competition, losing out to RUBEN STUDDARD by 1 percent of the vote. Since then, however, Clay has more than made up the gap. His cover of Rolling Stone became the biggest-selling issue in the past five years; his single, "This is the Night," not only went platinum, but was the biggest-selling single since ELTON JOHN's re-working of "Candle in the Wind" to honor PRINCESS DIANA; and his single has already topped Billboard's charts for two weeks running.
Clay also appears on the RCA compilation American Idol -- The Great Holiday Classics, also released October 14th, and will perform with other "American Idol" contestants, including KELLY CLARKSON, JUSTIN GUARINI, CHRISTINA CHRISTIAN, TAMYRA GRAY, KIMBERLEY LOCKE and, of course, Ruben, when FOX broadcasts "American Idol: Christmas Songs," Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m.
