Hello from the second row of the balcony at the Arcada! We can see all sorts of lovely ladies down below having a mini party waiting for the concert to start. Up here in the rafters we are listening to the organ player. Yes, I said organ player!

There are six people in front of me who can't be older than 25 max, and a gentleman next to us about 70. Super full house! Tons of toys in the lobby! Guy taking our toys seemed overwhelmed.

Organ player is done now! Here we go!

In the article I posted yesterday about the comment Clay made about a possible TV show..He also explained that he wanted to sit still for a bit,and sleep in the same bed for awhile ,so it appears hes concentrating on theater or TV as that would allow him to remain relatively stationary

Hey Barb -  The one thing we had not had in common until now is that we both had tickets to a cancelled show so I know exactly how you are feeling.

I remember Potawatami well.  Hope you have a safe trip with no snow.  There is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy the show.  Hope the drunk woman that was there yelling at Clay will not be there this time.     Look forward to hearing all about it.

Tiffany, gonna have to call it a night.  I fell asleep in the chair a few minutes ago.

I should be home before the one tomorrow night starts.  If not, I'll check in when I get back.

so all4luv, they called the Kmart and had a long time ringing and finally someone answered and the person told him to call you at home. He joked that he was going to tell everyone to go to Wal-mart instead. He was sooooo cute waiting for the answer and telling us all to be quiet for the start of the call so he could surprise you. Even if you didn't talk with him, you still have this moment with him, we were all listening for you, including Clay.

There was a big glitch when one of the speakers was acting up with a loud noise. someone came out and gave Clay another mic but he went back and apparently got them to turn the speaker off. I am sure tomorrow we will hear more of it in his banter!

He very seriously and kindly said some words for the children lost and asked us to have a moment of silence before GUCL, which was very appropriate and thoughtful. Unfortunately, the room next door had a loud band and they kept opening/closing the door and each time the band could be loudly heard. One of the ladies in the audience who goes to Arcada a lot says that bar band does not usually start until after the concerts. But, probably with the delayed start they unfortunately overlapped and those of us over at that side near that door could hear that during the last 1/2 h of the show. I don't know why the guard/usher didn't make sure the door was kept closed.

Anyhow, venue problems aside, Clay was wonderful and his glory notes were very strong and *glorious * . the lady next to me who was a fan during idol but has never seen him in concert before was saying that the albums do not do him justice, don't capture what we heard live, she thought his voice was amazing and he is so quick (in the banter), she does not know why she didn't see him before
.

I'm, trying to catch up from the evening. Silly, but my personal "glitch" tonight is part of the Clay humor in the concert.

My concert buddy was so sad, like many of us, that Detroit was cancelled. So sad that her BF surprised her with tix to St. Charles. I had to work (at Kmart!). He somehow managed to get them in the front row, center and there the story begins. Clay saw her phone, does his schtick about the phone and asks her to call me. So she calls me at Kmart. I left there at 745 EST so I was not there, I was home and probably in the shower...WTF? I have this garbled message on my answering machine and I know it's Clay but I need a forensic scientist to ungarble it!! WTF?!! He wanted to talk to me!! I've gotta find out who answered that phone at work. The gal who took my place knows I love him like a member of my family. I don't think I would have choked if I had answered the phone. Why didn't I get some kind of intuition that something special would happen? I just can't think about it too much. But I will! And I should be trying to sleep cuz I have to get up at 4am for work and its 1230am!! I guess he asked her why I wasn't there if I was such a fan. WELL.........cuz I have to work and I never call off and I'm very responsible and now I just hate being responsible!! These great things always happen off the cuff. I just hope that there is another time in my fandom that he will say my name.

I'm now crying about this, crying about those sweet little angels from CT and watching White Xmas for the third time tonight. What a night!!!!!!!

The concert was spectacular, with incredibly funny moments mixed in with incredibly moving moments.

So many snafus with feedback that Clay finally stormed backstage and unplugged the speaker. We were laughing so hard that it hurt.

His speech in honor of the murdered children was moving, articulate and sobering, followed by "My Grown Up Christmas List" . Just impossible not to be moved.

Right at the start of the concert, Clay said "welcome to the Fischer Price Theater" it was hysterical.

I'm going to write more but we had guests and I.ll do more later.

I love him beyond reason and it lived up to my every expectation.

His body is scrumptious.

OMG!!! HE WAS SOOOOOOOOOO FABULOUS TONIGHT!!

AND
He looked f*cking gorgeous!!

EEEEEEEEEEEE! Home from the concert!!!!!!!

Got to get some thoughts together...but we had a great time. Michele (my sister) loved the show and all my CV friends here were so sweet and kind to her. I love you guys. It was so great to see so many from CV tonight. I had the best time .

OMG we had perfect seats...just perfect. 2nd row pit seats 1&2 right behind the loverly yakenlle and canuck!!!

Dinner before with lindylo, Nancella and deemer!! it so great spending time with y'all!

Clay was hysterical all night. The theatre was like it was spooked, lights going on and off, micrphones humming, noise from next door, strange noise from the speakers. Didn't effect the songs really...more when he was talking and boy did he go with it. OMG hysterical he was.

At one point he said something like the secular part of the show is over soon, thank god cause I wanna cuss....not exact words but something like that it was so funny!!!

But all the sound and light problems for ME sorta just added to the show cause it gave him jokes and he was so funny!!!

He also mentioned Kelly getting engaged tonight.

He talked about the shooting in Ct and asked for a moment of silence it was so touching.

I am just rambling here

At one point (my highlight for the night) he looked right at me during some banner when I was taking pics and he dropped the microphone down from his face and looked into my camera and posed with a goofy smile. Awwwwwwww! I hope the pic came out. Gotta find it on one of my memory cards

EEEEEEEE Great night!

I've driven by this theatre many times over the years but this was the first time I've ever been inside. Let's just say it's very old and not in the best condition.

And I'm not sure why they removed a good portion of the theatre seating in the middle section and replaced it with an odd assortment of chairs that had us crammed in like sardines.

Considering all of the technical problems tonight, Clay never sounded better.

By far the most moving moment of the evening was the minute of silence to remember the Connecticut shooting victims followed by My Grown Up Christmas List. I will never forget it.

And I cannot wait to hear the banter tomorrow night in Milwaukee......I believe Clay will have some things to say about the Arcada Theatre

Back from the concert. It started almost half an hour late and there were sound problems most of the night. I don't think he will ever play that venue again.

The minute of silence before "My Grown Up Christmas List" was very emotional. I have video and will try to get that posted. The internet here is pretty slow, so cross your fingers.

Our seats were incredibly close. They placed chairs in front of the regular seats. The venue was pretty much a dump. I felt that the crowd was good but not great.

I thought the person who tried to guess Joe's name had it right. I'll have to find the video where Clay actually said it.

I really enjoyed watching his hands. It's like he's conducting his voice.

FROM SHENANDOAH2@CLAYBOARD

OMG, OMG, OMG!! Back from the show in Easton!! That was ME he picked to try to pronounce Joe's name!!!!! I was so shocked when he looked at me that I looked around to see who else he could've been talking to! LOL!! So when he said "in the red blouse", I thought....uh-oh, that's me!!! I've been a fan since Day One and he finally spoke to me! I'm in Heaven!!

The show was so great!! It was a very small venue, but very nice.......the people were all very nice and it really made the evening so intimate and special. Clay's voice was OMG Perfect, except for one note that the person next to me didn't seem to miss. All of the long notes were dead on!! He looked great, he was funny........especially with Linda and her daughter-in-law, Lisa. There were quite a few people there from Easton, which surprised me. I am sooo glad!!!

The orchestra was perfect. They had to squeeze in front of us and under the step railing to get up on the stage, it's so small in there. But the one guy stopped and talked to the ladies behind us, telling them what a great guy Clay is and how much fun sound check was. He sounded like he thought Clay should be filling up large venues, which we all know is true!!! Yes, he should. He has so much talent!!!!!!

The lady that went on stage to sing, I think she was a little tipsy, but she was funny. She didn't want to go on stage at first. But then she didn't want to leave......He reached for the mic and she took a step backward and kept on singing! We all helped her out for a bit. She picked the lottery ticket from Ben's pocket.

The guy who shouted out that he was robbed on "Celebrity Apprentice" got a huge applause!! They were from the Bronx. There seemed to be a lot of NJU in the audience!

I think Scarlett was in the second row, when Clay sat on the stage during his song......so she was very close. I can't wait for the vids on this one!! Between his wit, the audience responses, and the VOICE!!

Can't think of much else. Time for bed.........if I can sleep!!!

OK, the Arcadia Theatre in St Charles Illinois is absolutely the funniest place on earth. The building has a mind of its own. It's like it has poltergeists. The lights go up, the lights go down, the mike hums and gurgles. Clay made it one hilarious comedy act. My sides hurt from laughing so much. He was in fine voice and did a wonderful job. The venue reminded me of that place in Tx or Okl years ago - which Quiana said had ghosts. There was an old, old, old organ where an old, old, old man sat and played before the concert. When it was time for the concert the organ dropped into the floor. Thank goodness, it was right in front of my great seat. The old, old man went down into the floor with the organ and another old, old man came out and helped him out of the pit. I DO NOT think they were real, I think the old, old organist was a ghost of vaudeville past. Then we were entertained by Dean Martin music while the promoter ? owner? used car salesman? attempted to get the building working properly so Clay could go on. Needless to say, after being delayed a half hour or so the opening bit with the cassette player became elongated and filled with lots of eye rolling, etc. Then he nailed All is Well.

Clay did a moment of silence for the kids in Conn right before he sang My Grown Up Christmas List. Needed a hanky for sure. Very moving. OMG, I hope we have clack of the chain across the stairs bit. Comedy gold. So much funny stuff. Did I mention he sang beautifully even though nothing in the theatre seemed to work right? LOL. He was a bright, shiny penny - every song was beautiful and in between the banter was hilarious,. I enjoyed myself immensely, but I bet he and Ben had a stiff drink after.

He even called it "the building" once - when he said he wanted to do the moment of silence he said "If the building will let us" (not exact).

eta: And, no....the building did NOT cooperate

What is the chain across the stairs bit?

they had this tiny flight of stairs up to the stage and had this chain across it, apparently showing it was closed to audience members. Well, when the gal (for Lyrics game) came up she stepped right over it and the guard then came to open it and Clay asked what it was for and apparently he said security. It hung down so far that it was nearly against the step and the gal had no trouble stepping over it so Clay was saying what was it protecting him from? ants? [/size]

Returned from the concert, and I have to say...this is one I'll remember for a long time.

The night was fraught with technical difficulties and just funny stuff. We arrived at the theatre at about 7:30, and were surprised to hear someone in front of the stage playing an organ! The organ was blocking part of the stage on my side, but I'm happy to report that, at showtime, the organ (and the man playing it) were lowered into the floor. Then they started piping in Dean Martin music. I love Dean Martin, but it all became a bit comical, then somewhat annoying, since the show ended up starting about 1/2 hour late. I think it started late because they were having sound problems.

Whomever was running the lights seemed to be having some problems as well. Late in the show, the sound problems reoccurred, or got worse, to the point that Clay had to wait for a resolution. Eventually he pulled the plug on one of the speakers, and he seemed to be getting pretty annoyed, as it went beyond what one would expect at a professional show. He made a point of saying that it was not his crew.

In the last 10-15 minutes of the show, I started to hear band music from a neighboring club. This was especially distracting during the "moment of silence" Clay called for, after he spoke briefly about the school shooting in Connecticut.

Things that made me laugh:
When we entered the theater and passed the concession stand, I heard someone ask if they were allowed to bring liquor into the theater. The bartender said, "we encourage it". Too funny.

When the speakers started making weird noises, at first Clay said "excuse me," as if he had expelled gas, Then, after the noises continued, he said that we would have to wait for the tugboat to pass. That was hilarious because the noise did sound like a tugboat. It's when the "toots" became louder and more prolonged that it went a bit too far.

Another funny: when Clay called a young lady onstage to try to sing a Christmas song, security rushed to assist her as she was walking up the stairs. Clay noticed there was a thick chain on the stage, at the top of the steps. He lifted the chain, for the audience to see. It looked like it had a red tie on it. He asked Security, "was is this for?" Security said, "It's to keep you safe." Clay said, as only Clay can say it......"From what?" It was so funny. He kept the laughter going as he mentioned that the girl had simply stepped over the chain and nothing happened. Then he did a big stepping motion, like he was stepping over a chain. It was pretty ridiculous....not sure how that chain would keep him safe, unless it was part of a booby-trap designed to snare someone trying to rush the stage.

Despite the technical difficulties, it was a fun night. Clay sounded especially good on the low notes (there were lots of them) and the power belts. Standout songs for me were All is Well, "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day", and the upbeat songs.

It was a full house, and I think even a last row balcony seat would have been a good seat.

Clay looks really good, thinner to the point that some of his pants look baggy. Not that I was looking that much.

I sure am glad I was able to get to the St. Charles concert, after debating what to do, after the Detroit concert was cancelled.

Thanks, Clay, for making me laugh and for singing your butt off.

This concert was special in many ways. There was the initial enjoyment of sitting in the row of the random collection of estate chairs mark by white tags . The poor people behind us were actually behind and at least a shoulder below us. There were side screens for viewing that lasted about half way through the show and I don't think Clay has made so many interesting faces in one night. The unintended light show must have been left over from one of the venues alternative rock band shows. We got some flashing fall colors in no particular order, than some bright blue lights, than no lights.....seizure inducing rhythms that did not go unnoticed by Clay, but he handled it all with grace and a lot of humor and mumbling under his breath, "it's Christmas time, it's Christmas time. As mentioned above the moment of silence followed by A Grown Up Christmas List, was very emotional and will stay with most of us forever.

There's a chain story that someone will tell, but I don't know if it will translate to a post and be as hysterical as it was in person .It truly demonstrates how quick this man is and how he finds humor where no one else would even look. He picked a CYT to play the song game with him. She was comfortable on stage and a fine singer. She won a $100 Macy's gift card for knowing that her true love gave her 8 maids a milking.

My only concert and it was excellent in all it's quirkiness and maybe because of it

First of all, I want to say that it was wonderful to see Thea and Phil!!!  Thea and I are both "talkers" so it is surprising that we even ate our food.   ;D  I guess we just took turns....she talked while I ate, I talked while she ate.  It worked for us!   ;)  Thea is a lovely person, and we always enjoy getting together.  Our hubbies have met a few times before and get along well, and always find plenty of things to talk about while Thea and I are chatting away.  I actually asked hubby what they talked about on the way home, because Thea and I were totally unaware of their conversation!     It was a great time!  Thea brought me an unexpected lovely gift.  Thanks again, Thea!

The theater was a small venue, and in some ways "quaint".  There were lots of technical difficulties all evening which got worse as the night went on.  The concert didn't start until nearly 8:30.  Clay was trying to be gracious, but he had to pause many times because of problems with the sound system, and somewhere near the end he finally said, "I wasn't going to say this, but this is NOT my crew."  The owners resurrected this older theater 8 years ago and is trying to make a go of it, but I have a feeling Clay won't be coming back.

Hubby and I were in the 9th row overall, and no more than 30 feet from Clay.  Hubby even commented on how close we were.  We could see every expression on his face.  That part alone was glorious!  I had not even read the list of songs, so a few surprised me.  I could not even pick out a favorite.  I loved All is Well, because that is one of my all time favorites.  O Holy Night was particularly wonderful!  For some reason, I loved Clay singing Away in a Manger.  Such a common, simple song sounded extra beautiful.  Clay's voice sounded so much more mature.  His voice was strong and wonderful.  He hit all the glory notes with ease!  I cried during MGUCL, and DSIAFCD, because it was beautiful, and I knew the concert was about to end, and it was all so beautiful.  (Did I already say that?)  BTW, I asked hubby's favorite song, and he said MDYK.  He sang that with a choir once, and he loved it last night!

Clay's banter was wonderful.  He was very funny and spontaneous.  When he picked a girl to come up on the stage, she walked over a rope that was roping off the stage, but it had fallen on the floor.  Clay asked the security guy what was that???  He said what are you trying to keep out....ants....earthworms?  It was a particularly funny moment.  He also noticed a girl making a phone call in the front row, and asked her who she was calling, and she said her friend that was working at KMart.  So Clay took her phone...as we know he has done before, and called the girl.  The front desk answered and he asked for the girl, and she asked who was calling.  He said Clay Aiken...she said WHO...and he said Clay Aiken.  She said he had to call her at home and hung up!!!  Again, a very funny moment of the night.

One thing was very special to me.  We got to the theater early, and I decided to go to the bathroom before it started.  There was a LONG line for the bathroom.  I literally crawled over a woman to get to the line, and nearly stepped on her foot, and I told her I was trying to get to the bathroom line.  She joined me and said she was glad I mentioned it as she did not even notice how long the line was.  We started to talk in line.  I asked her if she was a long time fan, and she said OH, yes.  She is from Kansas and flew in with friends the day before the concert and was flying out today.  Like so many of us, she has been to concerts all over the place.  This was the closest concert so they flew to Chicago.  I asked if she posted on any Clay websites, and she said no.  So I asked how she met her Clay friends, and she said first she met one, then was introduced to another, and soon her circle of friends amounted to 12, and they all traveled together many times to see Clay.  After the concert, she was in the lobby and stopped me on the way out.  We just smiled at each other and shook hands and wished each other safe travels.  I don't know why, but it was a special moment, and it is bringing tears to my eyes thinking about it today.  The Clay Nation is alive and strong, if a bit smaller than years ago.  But I told hubby once in the car, that this is part of the magic of Clay.  No matter where we are, we "get" each other, and are instant friends.  I will never forget her!

Clay also mentioned that a few more guys are coming to the concerts, now that he appeared on CA.  He made his usual jokes asking guys if their wives/girlfriends dragged them there.  One said he actually bought the tickets for her, and Clay said that he was going to get lucky tonight...in his cute, sing-song voice.  We have heard him make those jokes before, but somehow he makes them funny every time!  I think it is his endearing personality.

If you read any of the Cellcert, you heard that Clay did a silent moment for the children and adults killed in the tragedy in CT.  He made a poignant speech that touched us all.  His moment of silence seemed to go on and on.  It reminded  me a lot of when a teacher says to close your eyes for one minute, and kids are always surprised how long a minute is.  I think Clay extended the moment to stress the importance.  He followed it up by MGUCL.  It was beautiful, and perfect.  I did not mind the "Dead Baby" stories, as only one was about a child that had died.  Hubby thought they were boring, but they were perfectly placed and followed up by songs that were at the perfect moment.  It was great.

I left with tears in my eyes I could not control.  I was overwhelmed with joy, to be honest.  Every single thing about the night reminded me of why I am a Clay fan.  The dinner with Thea, which would have never happened w/out Clay, and the many dinners and get togethers I have had with so many of you.  The fun as Clay's humor is always spot on.  It is a natural talent he has that also reflects his intellect.  He knows the right thing to say at the right moment.  He is not hard on the eyes.   ;)  And his voice is more beautiful than ever, and I still get goosebumps.  I was overwhelmingly reminded of why I am a Clay fan, and always will be.  It was a special, special night.  I loved every minute and will go again and again.  What more can a Clay fan say?

The Fisher-Price theater made for some of the funniest moments I've ever had. His facial expressions during the Tug Boat scene were priceless. After a particularly long, low series of moans from the speakers he said, 'There's a tugboat coming through. Be on it!' He warned us to be prepared to run for our lives few times.

The strings were wonderful. The sound system, not so much. Everyone agreed that, in spite of their age, the orchestra was wonderful.

Clay didn't have one single off note. He was perfection when singing and "johnny Carson" at his best when speaking. I would judge it the best concert ever for so many reasons but his voice was sublime. The most emotional he seemed was during "My Grown Up Christmas List" .

OAN his fingers are ridiculously long, slender and mesmerizing

When he started the story about Jacob and Emmanuel, several people called out " Council Bluffs!!!!". The look onClay's face was utterly priceless. .

Back to the concert, Clay had no trouble with any of the songs - I think he was challenged by the demon building and was determined to make the music shine - and it did. The look on his face after he nailed All is Well was that of a cat licking the cream off his lips. I mean, imagine doing that song so well when you don't know what is going to happen at any given moment. And, yes...we were told to prepare to evacuate. Should he drop the mic and abruptly leave the stage we were to immediately run from the room. Not a good idea, LOL but his presentation was hilarious. He also said he would be glad when the Jesus part of the concert was over and he could move on to the secular because he felt like swearing. He hadn't noticed he already had used "crap" and "hell". LOL.

The beautiful singing in sharp contrast to the quick, witty entertainer is what made the evening so special. The music wasn't ruined, it was kind of enhanced by the fact a mic could go out at any moment - but it didn't during the songs, just during the banter. I had trouble going to sleep, still had a grin on my face at 2AM.

I just read through the whole cellcert, and first want to thank Marilyn and Tiffany for doing this for all of us, and bringing all of this here for us to read.

Just a few clarifications.  The concert DID start a half hour late due to all the technical difficulties.  I was worried it would never go on!

As for the Midwest...Clay said we were a combination of polite and rowdy, and he liked that.  No drunks there.  A few shouts of "I love you, Clay"  and "Woo", but not too many.  There was a mom sitting in front of me with a girl that must have been about 11 years old and she yelled out "I love you Clay" a few times.  Good to see a new generation of Clay fans!   ;D

We are on Central time here, so the concert was over by 10:30.  I noticed there were a lot of hotels right on the same street, so I bet many people were spending the night.  Hubby decided he would rather drive last night than this morning, so we did drive the nearly 3 hours home, but we have relatives in that area, so we are used to the drive.  And you are right, Marlene, Clay is worth it!!!

As for the lights, they weren't exactly "flashing", just changing from one color to another.  Not exactly high-tech modern, but it wasn't distracting to me.  It takes a lot more than that to distract me when Clay is in front of me singing.   ;)

Marlene, hubby thought Faye's story was hard to understand, too.  I knew Faye read one of the stories, but it didn't sound like her to me...she sounded different than when I have heard her in interviews.  Maybe it is the recording.  But it was hard to understand.  She talked a bit fast.

But all in all, it was wonderful...despite the technical flaws.

Barb - Have fun tonight!!!  I just couldn't do 2 concerts this time.  I would have loved to be up there in Milwaukee with you!

Many thanks again to Marilyn and Tiffany!

Marilyn & Tiffany. ~ Thanks so much for bringing us the recaps. Even though Clay had the difficulties it sounds like it was another wonderful show. Just 4 more to go. Boo! Hoo!  I only hope after he gets the rest he deserves that he will not stay in hibernation for the remainder of winter.  STRIKE WHILE THE FIRE IS HOT.

Very welcome Woody and Marlene. I saw Thea's recap as well on CM. Loved yours Woody. Thanks! Agreed with everything you said about Clay. I never had a doubt that he can sing just as beautiful as when we 1st saw him and he still loves what he is doing. This concert sounds like it was memorable or sure. LOL So glad you had a wonderful time and with Thea and your hubbys also. It's nice you met a fan also Woody. I like that too to meet Clay fans you don't know and be reminded that we are are still here.

Some people on Twitter are saying that the theater should tell Clay they are sorry. Have no doubt he will never play there again. I guess soundcheck was ok though cause no one mentioned of any problems. Guess you never know and it does happen. Like I said Clay is such a pro and classy the way he handles these things.

I really hope more people are reading here, watching clack, seeing the pics. etc I know Marilyn works hard to do this for us. I just help a little. So you are missing out if you aren't here. All the shows are not the same. He keeps getting better with his singing, banters etc. He sure is a special guy and I too am proud to be his fan and part of the Claynation! ;D

Still crying over MGUCL. sniff  :'( So beautiful. Like to see more clack. Only one I saw so far.

Like to bring what Thea said over if she doesn't mind.

My review in a nutshell:

1.  Great company; loved seeing DEBBIE and her hubby again!   Wishing we could have spent more time together.

2.  Clay was in near/perfect voice.  His voice has a much richer sound than it did a couple years ago.  And thankfully his intonation was spot on.  That has not always been the case IMO!

3.  Clay's stage presence has evolved into being highly professional.   I was very impressed!

4.  The venue was sub-par and the in-house crew was pathetic and incompetent.  But Clay being the consummate showman that he was.....He held it all together.  Clay is worthy of much better...I hope that someday he will once again be able to be more selective in his choice of venues.

5.  Loved his hair and wardrobe this time around.  He looked very GQ and hot!

6.  I'm very proud to be a Clay fan!

PINK ARMCHAIR AT CH M&G

Some more detail about St. Charles, now that I'm awake and caffeinated...

The M&G (my first OFC one ever): Having received at least two sternly worded emails from TC warning me -- in ALL CAPS -- not to be late, that latecomers WOULD NOT be admitted, etc., I was understandably nervous during the hour-long rainy drive out to St. Charles. My group -- Beagle3, Snix, ShyGirl and our fabulous driver hensey -- were absolute saints to get me there by 5:00, three hours before the show. At, I think, 4:57, Beagle3 got a call from cablegirl (thank you!), asking after my whereabouts. We were three blocks away at that point. We got there, I jumped out and ran around the building, and was met at the side entrance by Clay's tour manager Lauren, who quickly ushered me up the steps and ran hurriedly through the program. I guess she wasn't interested in seeing my I.D., and just be be clear: I WASN'T LATE. I was just LAST. *g* I do regret that I didn't get to talk to or meet anyone beforehand -- it was all moving very fast.

As instructed, we filed into the back row of the theatre and sat watching the sound check/orchestra rehearsal, already in process. I think we heard portions of "Emmanuel" and "The First Noel." After a few minutes, Clay strolled on stage in a navy UCONN hoodie and gray sweatpants. I didn't notice his shoes, but his hair was how you see it in the photos. He mostly marked the songs, but did belt out a few tasty appetizers -- Lauren admonished us not to applaud, but it was hard not to.

After that, Clay made his way back to us. The lady sitting next to me had not only never met him, but this was her first concert, and she quietly told me a couple of times that she was afraid she was going to faint. Very sweet. With a row of seats between us, he made a few very subtle but choice remarks about the condition of the venue and its bad audio, saying, "it's a rock concert venue" in a way that made it clear it wasn't a compliment. I think he also made a reference to the basement housing dead people. *g* The stage backdrop at that point looked like a wrinkled white sheet, and he said we could choose whether to use that or the red velvet curtain that followed. (Needless to say, we opted for the curtain.) Then he went down the row of the five St. Charles M&Gers, two from Detroit, and the two auction winners, asking our names and where we were from. Then he signed various things. I had brought a photo and my "burning dress" story and decided on impulse to have him sign my story. He surveyed it and said sardonically that he thought he'd heard it before. *g* We had a brief chat about Downton Abbey with regard to a flash drive I had brought him, and later I handed Lauren a red tee-shirt for him that read, "KEEP CALM AND FREE MR. BATES." Hope he likes it -- I'd have liked to have given it to him myself.

Then we lined up for photos -- first the auction winners, then the two Detroit folks, and then the rest of us. Clay orchestrated it so that we were facing the back of the theatre with three of us standing and the other two kneeling on seats in front. Clay came and stood in back -- not sure where, but I could feel him in back of me. No idea how the photo is going to to look...it was dark in there!

And then it was over. Great dinner at McNally's Pub down the street, where we were joined by Shamrock, MsCrabtree, sugrbugr, and Paradox. I'd never had a "boxty" before...sort of a cross between an omelet and a big quesadilla, only made with a spongy flavorful potato pancake and stuffed with roast beef, mushrooms, and provolone. Delicious! Bailey's Irish Cream Cheesecake, too. I'd go back there even if there wasn't a show.

SHOW RECAP:
Speaking of the show: Well, as my station has filmed a few things there, I had heard stories from our crew about how rundown it was. These stories were a gross understatement. As others have said, many of the seats in the center section had been removed and replaced by a mismatched collection of what looked like very old kitchen chairs with several generations of masking tape labeling them -- and crammed together like sardines. As we entered, a man was playing a big theatre organ, giving it a very nostalgic vaudeville ambiance. When he was done, a hydraulic lift lowered him out of sight and Dean Martin started serenading us over the PA system. For a long, long, time. The theatre owner -- think the smarmy guy from the movie That Thing You Do who introduced the band at the Pittsburgh rock concert -- came out to give us the rah-rah speech (we'll definitely be back to see Shirley MacLaine on February 22). He seemed touchingly excited to have Clay performing there (as well he should have been!), and as he left, we thought the show was starting. But no...more Dean Martin (maybe it was his ghost? I wouldn't have been surprised). Finally, after a couple of "any minute now!" announcements, the show began almost a half-hour late, with Clay taking full comic advantage of the situation.

He looked and sounded great, and was in great voice...the best I've ever heard in some of the songs. But the lighting was garish, weird and generally horrendous, the sound system was full of glitches, the speaker continually booming was very annoying and the whole thing was very amateurish. You could even hear music coming through the walls. Clay covered it well for the uninitiated, but I'm sure he was livid. The local girl who sang was adorable and Clay's banter about the chain on the stairs ("Protect me from WHAT? Ants?" Clay asked the security guy) was hilarious. He really did make the most of a bad situation...he can always put on a great show when lesser entertainers would have let the situation defeat them.

His tribute to the Newtown victims and subsequent rendition of "My Grown Up Christmas List" were incredibly moving...I thought it was fantastic that he did that. (I should also say that the toy drive in the lobby was a huge success...the elderly usher collecting them seemed overwhelmed -- I'm guessing that community won't forget Clay's appearance there anytime soon.)

When Clay made his final emphatic exit after the encore, that door went straight out the street and we joked that he probably strode directly to the bus and got the hell out of there! Lord knows we wouldn't have blamed him. Oh, to be a fly on the wall on that bus!

It was so great to see everyone -- especially the folks I haven't seen in ages. On to Milwaukee, where I hope to have more time to chat.

Home from a marvelous trip to St Charles Il. Wonderful time with fizzgig and TheClayWay and her dh. Met and talked to many other fans at the Hampton. Thrilled to have attended the ONE of a kind concert of this tour. I will just "DITTO" every other recap I have read here. It was one for the books and one I will remember for a very long time. He was his most entertaining self and well needed medicine for many of us. I thought about our sweet Jen several times and hoped she was watching and laughing with us from her front row seat in Heaven....and maybe had some of newest angels watching with her as he so eloquently honored them with his words and song. It was very moving.

I did talk with several locals who were fans of him on Idol and had never seem him live. We had a some of them right in front of us that were maybe in their late 20's maybe early 30's. We commented before the show that it was good to see a younger group and one of the girls said she was excited to hear him sing Christmas songs we assured them they would be blown away by not only his voice, but he was hilarious.. They had not heard anything about his banter. Well they laughed and laughed and clapped and clapped throughout the show and were very impressed on how funny he was. One of the guys commented that he had a lot of material to work with that night...but did not seem to matter to those NJU...they LOVED IT.

When we were walking out, we ran in girl who was in her mid 20's, bf or dh..not sure and her parents. She was from St Charles, never seen him live...but was a big fan. Had made 2 signs...ALL of them loved the show..!!! They were blown away that we had come all the way from St Louis to see him and actually introduced us to the theater manager.. poor guy was so excited that Clay was there, but I would imagine that Clay was not near as excited.

It was so good though to see a concert that had so many issues and glitches still entertain and enthrall the NJU's.

Bottom line for me...no matter what is next for Clay...be Broadway or TV..if he ever completely retires as a touring artist/entertainer...it would be a BIG mistake..HUGE

Just got home from St. Charles and loved Clay's voice last night and he did turn all the mishaps into comedy gold. I was sitting three tows from the stairs and the chain and it was hilarious what he said and did. I am not so sure that the security person knew how to take him.

This was my only concert after deciding on Friday morning(knowing that my Detroit show was cancelled) that I was going to make the trip over to St. Charles. I could not stand it that I was not going to see him.

I had a young girl next to me, maybe being about 25, who had not seen him since 2004. She said she has been attending alot of rock concerts lately but when she saw in the paper this week he was coming she wanted to see him. She could not talk anyone into coming with her so she called the venue and needed one ticket and they got her into row C. She drove the three hours to see him and got there just before 8 pm. She laughed all night and took many pictures on her phone. After the show was over I asked her how she liked it. She said he was amazing and did not regret coming. She was so cute and excited.

Hey gang -- I don't post here much but I gotta share the EEEEEE's for last night. For you see...my husband was the gentleman Clay talked to during the pre-"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" banter. I had warned him ahead of time that Clay likes to pick on men in the first few rows. Since we were in row 3, my husband was an easy target. *g* Hubby told me later that he was trying to say "her" when he stumbled on his words and said "here," while pointing at me. And then, well then, Clay talked to me as well. My husband has seen Clay oodles of times, but he mostly goes to humor me. (His musical tastes range more from Steely Dan to The Who to George Jones). So, when Clay asked me if he was dragged, I was kinda hemming and hawing a bit as well. In essence, Clay was right when he said "oh, so he just drove then." Hee.

Sigh. Clay talked to me and my husband.

I haven't caught up here at all, but I gotta say that the show last night was a classic case of "when handed lemons, make lemonade." His humor on stage carried him through the entire night. I also enjoyed his sensitive side with his speech before "My Grown Up Christmas List", and vocally, he was spot on. I've seen Clay live for 10 years now, and to me, his voice has matured so very well.

LUCKIEST1@CV

St. Charles recap (written earlier today)

Wow, talk about one extreme to the other. Shippensburg was the ultimate classy venue, plaques to commemorate everything donated by members of the public, gorgeous acoustics, mainly local audience, and ushers determined that we weren't going to use our cameras. Last nights venue was a dive. We arrived in time to drop Claymatron off for her m&g about 4:45. There was no real parking lot. We illegally parked in a lot across the street, and hoped it was late enough on a Saturday that we wouldn't be ticketed. The Arcada theatre is an antiquated building, apparently built in 1926. There was a man pulling a trolley piled with dirty, dusty old pieces of...something. The girl in the box office was in and out, joking with the guy about taking it down the stairs, and he said something to us about if we heard a crash come rescue him. It was apparently elevator equipment. You couldn't have paid me enough to ride any elevator in that place!

Anyways, once the m&gers went in, we hung around the hallway waiting. We could see Ben and the orchestra rehearsing through the open door. I am not kidding when I say there was absolutely no security anywhere. Anyone could have wandered on in. But I didn't, and eventually someone thought to shut the door before Clay started rehearsing. We heard parts of Emmanuel clear as a bell. Then we realized the sound was even better in the stairwell that lead up to the balcony. That was wide open and available to anyone to climb. So I did. I peeked over the back barrier and caught a glimpse of Clay singing "The First Noel" in a blue hoodie and sweat pants. But then he stopped and I scooted back down the stairs because I didn't want to get in trouble. Not by the non existent security, but by Clay or one of his team. So we sat on the stairs and used the Starbucks wifi until Claymatron came out.

There were 6 of us for dinner - me, my daughter, cindilu2, Claymatron, disneykid, & her husband. We knew the doors opened at 7 but let's just say we weren't in a great rush to get back. We figured it'd be a zoo, but we were kind of concerned about parking. We had a great dinner at the Olive Garden, and Claymatron regaled us with the details of her m&g, before we found a parking spot in front of a local business that was closed for the evening. We passed Clay's bus in one of the other lots, and wondered if he was still in there. It's neat how a couple of sections of it seem to pop out...wonder if those are the sleeping areas? Anyways, we got inside the Arcada and it was like a family reunion.

The elderly staff didn't seem to care if you had a ticket in hand, or what your ticket actually might have said. A far cry from the online ticketing system that said that if you printed your ticket a second time, the first print wouldn't work. Work with what? Nothing was scanned. We went looking for our row 3 seats, only to find that they had no rows in front of them, but they did have a humungus Wurlitzer type organ blocking the view of the stage. The usher assured us that it would sink into the floor at show time. And then we would effectively be first row! Are you kidding me? That was totally unexpected! And lo and behold, seat mates were ldyjocelyn & her husband. Who knew?

Our section was made up of an assortment of old dining room chairs marked with hand written numbers. The theatre was decorated with Christmas lights, but it was kind of strange with the Italian style decor. Dean Martin was singing about the moon in June and a big pizza pie and it was just all so comical. An ancient man came and sat at the organ and started playing indecipherable music about 2 feet in front of our faces. This went on for far too long and I remember saying I hoped Clay wasn't beating up a coke machine or something back stage, because they started making announcements that there were technical difficulities delaying the start of the show. The MC guy was very friendly, but he was full of shit too. No way this theatre was state of the art or had housed so many televised specials recently. I mean, I think it's great if you want to take a historic building and revamp it and upgrade it and make it state of the art, but this one wasn't anything like that. It was an old theatre than should probably have been condemned.

Finally they lowered the organ into the floor, but the old man was still in it! And then another old man came over and told him to stop playing, time to close up. So the organ playing man nimbly leapt out of the pit in the floor, and they covered it all up with some black boards that had "no step" lettered on them. I wondered if Clay might say something about them during the show but he didn't. If he had been able to step on them he would have been close enough for us to touch. After quite a bit more of Dean martin's music, they finally lowered the lights and Clay walked out on stage, making his funny faces and playing up the schtick before "All Is Well". When he went off to get the tape recorder, he exiting our side, but came back on the other side, making a big show of pushing the curtain out of the way to get back to centre stage. He was so close I could see the make up on his face, and his throat thrumming with the notes he was singing. I can't even imagine being in the real first row, you would be at eye level with his shoes and looking up his nose. I don't think there was a better seat in the house than ours this time around. But maybe I'm just biased.

Clay let us know immediately that his monitors weren't working. He kept putting his mike down to them to get the feedback, in hopes that maybe it would wake someone up backstage to fix it. He called it the Fisher Price theatre and said that if we saw him drop the mike and run, we should get the hell out of there. He kept catching Ben's eye and the two of them were cracking up. He made countless references to the building and made it pretty clear how bad it was, but then he would put an exaggerated grin on and say "it's Christmas!" and crack up again. He singled ldyjocelyn's husband out early on, which we figured he would, and it was quite disconcerting since I was about 2 inches to his right, having Clay's scrutiny in our direction. I was terrified he might ask me something because I doubt I would have been able to find my voice to answer him, but thankfully he never did. I was in 7th heaven all night watching his feet, his hands, his throat, his sparkly eyes...omg, just being so close after so many tours of being in the mid-section of the venue was a delight. His voice was stellar but the sound system left something to be desired. He made lemonade the whole night, turning the interesting surroundings and glitches into comedic fodder.

The bit about the chain on the stairs had the tears running down my face, it was so funny. He asked big burly security man, who was standing there all night doing nothing, what it was supposed to protect him from, ants? Ha ha ha, thank goodness there were no crazy fans trying to storm the stage because Clay would have been toast. God, when I think back to tours of yesteryear.....and then the sound system became possessed and wouldn't stop humming and I thought Clay was going to lose it for a few minutes. He mouthed "frell" in one sentence, tried to speak without a mic but was overpowered by the buzzing, and finally walked off the stage and unplugged the damned mic himself, before his tour manager came and handed him another one that actuallly worked.

He was really heartfelt when he started talking about the senseless shootings in Conneticut, and you could see his hands subtly shaking and the tears in his eyes as he started singing "My Grown Up Christmas List" after the minute of silence. I loved that he intentionally changed the lyrics to "a human soul" to fit the occasion. And then he brought the show back up again with some humourous banter before launching into "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day". I was hoping he'd come back over to us to sing the glory note and he positioned himself perfectly in between the two feedback speakers so I could see his feet just in time. Wheeeee! So powerful, he drags it right from his toes, he does. And then he went off stage and we made a lot of noise until he came back through the centre of the curtain, hesitated a minute, and chose to go to the opposite side for the encore. But I was thrilled for my daughter & Claymatron, who were sitting in 5th row and got a perfect view for the whole song. He didn't go up the aisle because apparently it was blocked, so he stood there and then walked to the left exit. My daughter took video with her iPhone that is pretty good so I will get that uploaded to the vault or youtube. She goes by crimsonice.

After the concert we went back to the hotel and sat in the lounge with disneykid and her husband and relived our experience. He had attended the Clay & Ruben tour a couple of years ago, so this wasn't his first experience. We laughed our asses off thinking back on the banter and the venue and read a bit of what people were posting online, before heading off to bed. And then this morning were were laughing & crying at some of the red reports that really captured the essence of the theatre last night. I am so glad that there were so many clack gatherers in attendance, and that there were no worries about cameras. This is one for the history books! It was so bad and yet Clay made it so good. Oh, and i forgot to mention the toy drive! We bought toys at Target prior to the show and the man accepting them was so overwhelmed with the generosity of Clay's fans, he said he wished they could have him back every night. There were huge piles of toys in the entrance way. Ha ha I don't think Clay will ever return to that venue. Even if they would take him back after all his well deserved comments from the stage! I look forward to what he might say about it tonight in Milwaukee. Hope the cell cert is clearer there!

Sadly, we are already on the road home, as I type this into notepad on cindilu2's little netbook. We had 2 fantastic concert experiences this time around, and as much as I wish they wouldn't have cancelled Detroit (especially for those fans who couldn't get to another one) perhaps it wasn't meant to be. It would have been tough for Clay to put on a jovial show that day. Although I have no doubt he would have managed, because he's just that awesome. I love him.

CLAYMATRON@CV M&g

This meet & greet was quite different from my first one, but it was very special nevertheless. There were 9 of us..2 ladies who had missed their M & G when the Detroit concert was cancelled, 2 ebay winners and the 5 of us OFC winners. As Pink Armchair posted in her recap, Seema, the tour manager, directed us to the back of the theater and we watched the orchestra do some sound checks with Ben, then Clay came out and started to sing bits and pieces of his songs. After awhile he made his way up the stairs to us. He was wearing a navy UCONN hoodie and grey track pants and his hair was clean but combed straight back. He already had his makeup on, but his hair wasn't "stage" ready, if you know what I mean. I can't remember the order in which he did things but I think he asked us each our names first and walked back in the reverse order and asked where we were from. He seemed to be taking stock of how far each of us had travelled as he made little comments along the way. (ie with me he said "That's quite far") He then went over to Seema, and got a handful of Sharpies and a pen from her. Asked if anyone had brought a book for him to sign, one person did, I think, (MOButtercup, was that you?) and he signed that first with the pen, then made his way down the line signing various things for people with the Sharpies. During this time a couple of men, who we later found out were the theater owners (although they looked like used car salesmen, as someone aptly described them, LOL), came into the area and spoke to Clay. I couldn't hear their conversation, but Clay told them he'd be with them shortly and they went out the door. Clay then turned to us and commented in a stage whisper that the venue was "horrible". I couldn't hear everything he said, but I know I asked, jokingly, if there were plaques in the bathroom, like at Shippensburg, and he said he hated to think what was in the bathroom!!! Ha ha! He then mentioned that he had a choice of what backdrop they would use (rolled his eyes) and pointed to the one behind the orchestra and mentioned that it looked like a painter's dropcloth, but it was either that or a red velvetish one...and he'd let us choose. We went with the red velvet, obviously, and he agreed that it was the lesser of two evils. We couldn't see it up close, but it looked OK from that distance. He was very funny and animated about the whole thing, even at that point, but we could tell he was a little distracted and concerned about the quality of his concert at this venue. Anyway, he then asked Seema to set up for the photos in three groups. He told us OFC winners to stand in two rows and pointed to the spots, and then he took the ebay winners first - one of him with both, and one with him each individually, then the Detroit girls got one with him and the two of them. and then he headed up to us and rearranged us (a la teacher, Clay), as none of us had any idea what he meant. Two stood in front, in one row of the theater, and three stood in the next row down with Clay. I'm pretty sure I was standing next to him, but I honestly can't remember anything except that he had his arm around my shoulder and patted me when the photo taking was over. Then he thanked us and was gone.

It was amazing, I'm sure I'm forgetting details, but every one of us may have taken something different from the experience, this is my take. Trust me...The Aiken Fog is not a misnomer!

I think you hit it square on the head lady! Yes, I was the one with a book. I have an older one that I've read repeatedly but took a new one with me that a wonderful friend sent to me. I thought he looked adorable and the whitish backdrop literally looked like a drop cloth! LOL I agree that the owners looked like anything but a venue owner. But Clay, being the gentleman that I think he is, was very kind and never mentioned how crappy the venue was until he left the room. Also, Clay's feet kept getting stuck to the floor! LOL He was doing what I call the "spider dance" He was acting like he was stuck in tar or gum...it was hilarious...wrong but hilarious. (btw...later in the evening, I nearly fell b/c my foot got literally stuck to the floor and when I started to walk away, my shoe did not want to come with me...can we say ankle strap!lol) I think Clay was definitely distracted b/c the monitors weren't working (and they didn't during the concert either...he was going off house feedback...not easy but he made it look easy and performed to perfection) I was afraid I'd pass smooth out...at one point when he was walking back to us, I leaned over to PinkArmchair and told her b/c I could barely breath. I know it sounds silly but I'm easily intimidated! LOL As for the Aiken Fog...how do you all think I drove 11 hours home after the concert last night!? I'm still up...never have slept yet.

ZARAONE @CH

I was lucky enough to have my first every M&G (after 32 concerts!) tonight in St. Charles. Clay was luminously beautiful and sweet as sugar. I had him sign a picture that my son drew in the 2nd grade, of a “Clay Acken Consrt” complete with stick people fans and a stick person Clay with spikey hair. I told Clay my son is now 14 and he said that made him depressed. *g* Clay was as sweet as could be and I think my prevailing memory will be of his giving instructions on how to line up for the group photo and then as he moved over to do a photo of another group, immediately forgetting everything he said and shuffling around aimlessly until he lined us all up. Priceless.

 ("zara one") AT CH
After my M&G (way up there among the coolest things I have ever done) and concert in St. Charles last week, I've been trying with only moderate success to put my thoughts together because I feel like we are seeing a different Clay on this tour.

I don't think I'm alone in having had moments where I felt Clay was ambivalent at best, sometimes even somewhat resentful about his career and where his post-AI life had taken him and while understandable, as a fan that has been disconcerting. We've had such fun the past almost-10 years and I know I wouldn't want it to end. But on the other hand it wouldn't be much fun following someone so burnt out on their career that they clearly weren't enjoying themselves either.

I'm not too worried about that anymore. If I had to pick one word to describe Clay and this tour, it would be this: Joy. He exudes it. I don't know when I have seen him, in recent years, so clearly elated to be on stage and to be enjoying each show so much. Even with all the crazy, annoying things that happened in St. Charles, he didn't let it affect the quality of the entertainment he was putting forth; in fact, he just got more entertaining, lol.

I don't know what has happened, but I don't think I've ever seen Clay this generous as a performer or this appreciative of his audience. I've been touched by the affectionate manner in which he's treated fans this tour. At the end of our M&G after the photo was taken, he rubbed/patted my shoulder and the shoulder of the lady (waves to Claymatron!) on the other side and I thought that was such a kind, sweet gesture. He clearly was touched by the story of the fan from Japan and he's had such kind things to say about the fans. At the St. Charles show he thanked the fans for "taking him in" and I thought that was so sweet.

I get choked up every time I hear him sing "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" as I start thinking about everything we would have missed these last 10 years, the friendships and the craziness and the ups and downs but mostly just the sheer joy of being a Clay Aiken fan. I got the feeling that he felt the same. I think he's thankful for us, and I know I am thankful for him
