Last night our resident Artist Jan  emailed this to me and asked that I post it on the OCD for the Anniversary (I don't think she knew at the time that the site would be closed today). She did this woodblock shortly after 9-11, and posted it on Claymaniacs at that time. The words at the bottom are the words of the song "Have You Forgotten?".

I will be attending a 9/11 event this evening locally with some high profile dignitaries.  I like to think I am a "tough" and "macho" guy,  but I tell you.....it will be very difficult this evening to keep my composure.  Such a sad sad day in American history.  May their souls sit along God's side in heaven.

Such sadness- so many lives lost for no reason. They were not soldiers, they were not fighting the war. It was all so tragic and so needless.

That day, I was almost at work when the first plane hit. Everyone thought it was a small plane, that it was an accident.

When I got to work, we had a big screen tv in the outer loan officers room. Everyone was glued to it when the second plane hit. I cannot tell you the feeling of dread and horror that ran throuigh the office. The tears  were flowing. We had loan officers that were part time, and their full time job was firefighting. One of our guys was working at the office and left to go to the city. We found out later that he had switched shifts with a guy. THis fellow had wanted SUnday off, and our guy John had it off, so they switched.

We found out later that John's whole company had perished in the fire. It could have been him. Such a twist of fate!!

So many of our company had friends or relatives working in the city, some at the WTC.

Last night I watched a show on TV about the heroes of WTC. The two Port AUthority officers that went UP story by story until they had rescued as many as 77 people and got them down the stairs. The one officer called his supervisor who was offsite and told him that the elevators and the structural damage did not look good (he was an engineer) and he thought the tower might collapse.  Unfortunatley, neither of those two got out-but thanks to them, so many did.

The firefighters that went into the buildings and up towards the fires- their courage and bravery touched my heart- they will never be forgotten.

And the police and Port AUthority workers that gave their lives doing thier job- they are in my heart also.
What a senseless tragedy!

Michael i was still crying this morning when then showed everyone pictures from our state this morning that lost their lives.  i remember being at work when it happened and we were all glued to the tvs in the cafe.  we learned later that our ex plant manager and the guy down the hall were on that plane.. in 2 plants were people where killed they have memorials and every year we have a cermony to honor those people and everyone else that was killed, still touching every time.
We will never forget it changed so many people lives and our lives.  And we can never forget how many  firefighters ,police , cilvilians and rescue workers risked their own lives to save others.   My thoughts and prayers go out to the people who lost lives and their families.  THis was such a senseless tragedy.

It does not seem like it has been ten years since that horrific day.  It has been impossible to watch the footage all over again without shedding a tear time and again.

That morning I was at work and my son called and wanted to know if we had a TV at work.   We did not so he told me there had been an accident and a plane had hit one of the WTCs.  While we were talking the second plane hit the other building and everyone knew it was no mistake.

The biggest surprise for me that day is that we had a man working in our office that was born and raised in Belguim and was always letting us know how superior things were there.  We were all trying to get on the internet to get some news about what happened but the coverage wasn't that great and he came into the office and asked if we had a TV.  No one did so he asked me where we could get one and we went to WalMart and bought a TV.  The sales dept. was a large office so he put it in there and he sat there all day watching the coverage.  We watched it for the rest of the week and then he took his TV home without ever asking the company to pay for it.

The one thing that I'll never forget and it has been mentioned many times this weekend, is how united this country became--regardless of ages, race, religion or sexual orientation--we were one people joined by this tragedy.

This country needs to become united again and, if anything could do that, maybe it is the coverage this weekend of 9/11.

We will never forget and GOD BLESS AMERICA

9/11 Memories – An Opportunity to Embrace Diversity

That morning I awoke in my usual semi-comatose state, while still in my nightgown went to my treadmill, turned on the miniature TV I had there and hopped on to get my not so thrilling exercise done.  Except, something seemed to be wrong with the TV?  No…it was grainy/black and white but, Peter Jennings was narrating the footage…images of the twin towers…portion of tower one damaged…when before my very eyes, and his, a second plane raced right into tower two.  It was beyond comprehension.  I listened a few moments more and then inexplicably decided to quit the allotted time I had for exercise and go back to bed.  However, minutes later, the telephone rang with my best friend on the line…and then the processing began.

School had been in session only a day or two, and I considered what I would do to comfort and reassure 10 year old children I knew so very little.  Our school was in the midst of remodeling, thus I was in a portable classroom located on the west lawn.  The window, and open door opened upon an expanse of greenery, trees, and chirping birds…how pastoral the scene in such contradiction to the chaos of NYC.

Just as soon as I could complete the attendance procedures, I gathered my students around me as I sat in my rocker.  They were allowed to share their feelings; I attempted to offer a calm vantage point to them.  They possessed a pretty sophisticated understanding of this attack already…well aware of the concept of terrorism for their young years, as tragic as that was.  Thus, I offered that our city was devoid of targets that might attract comparable activity, and shortly thereafter, I allowed the children some time to draw/color whatever they wished to express.

It was during this art time, a beautiful young lady came up to my desk and in her shy voice, whispered that she needed to ask me a question.  She then revealed to me that she was Muslim, and with her eyes wide, near tears, asked me if she could still have a good life.  I looked her straight in the eyes, and stated that she had every reason to take pride in herself, and that her heritage was her special gift…that if she was rejected for it, she would be spared empty friendships with those who had closed hearts.

While there is tremendous pain in considering that terrible day, I wish to consider the hope, the transformation that has occurred since then.  I believe in the strides we have made to embrace diversity, be it race, sexual orientation or religious persuasion.  There is much more to the task, and the need is great to complete it.  May we continue to do so, with the strength, courage, and honesty that have always made me so proud to be an American.
