I fly out of Green Bay VERY early Wednesday morning and have over 2-hour layover in Detroit and then on to Fort Wayne!  The weather here in Wisconsin looks OK for Wednesday . . . . so I am praying that Detroit and Fort Wayne have good weather for travel!  AND also Ohio!!  The Maniacs for Wednesday are from Wisconsin (me), Michigan and Ohio!!  Fingers crossed!  :)

I think Indiana is Central Standard Time, the same as Wisconsin.  When I'm at the Detroit airport for the layover . . . it is Eastern Standard Time.  Central time is always one hour EARLIER than Eastern time.  Better double check . . . .  Right now (Central Standard Time) it is 8:03 PM.  Does that make sense??  I've never been an expert on time zones! :D

YIPES -  If Quianna even has a reaction to his hair, it must be a hot mess!!  OK - He has the voice.  He is drop-dead handsome.  The audiences love him.  His hair is bad more often than it is good!   :(    It shouldn't be important . . . . but it is.  Why doesn't he get a good "hair person" during a tour . . . . . and let good things happen on his head for every performance!  ::)

Clay was his wonderful self tonight at Westbury and his banter had everyone in stitches. Funnnnnnny guy!

Meeting him in person at the M&G was just magical.....he was so nice, friendly, interested in what we had to say and did I mention genuinely nice? I'll never forget his hug when we took a picture together!

He wore a purple sweater, a purple tie and a white shirt. Not sure about the pants.
Title: Re: WESTBURY, NY-CAPITAL ONE BANK THEATER 02/26/2011
Post by: Marilyn on February 27, 2011, 01:07:42 AM
He did say that very clearly. OMG he was so funny tonight!! He said that this was suppposed to be a revolving stage but they changed it because he would get motion sickness. He also said that a pipe had burst in the theater. It was cleaned up but you could still smell turnips?? He said that the venue people had used tons of febreze on the seats but the stage still seemed to be not completely cleared, so if his eyes started watering that would be why. He was hoarse too, and cleared his throat a lot during the first portion of the show.

He got a standing ovation for the love story song. His voice absolutely soared on it. (By the way, its hard to clap with a cellphone in your hand, so I was just making the motions). He told us his pants were too tight. And boy, did they cling to that fabulous gluteous maximus. They seemed to be a taupe color, with faint stripes. It also looked like he had a dark stripe down the seams. He wore the slate blue sweater and a white shirt. Couldnt figure out the tie- blue or purple print maybe? I could see his striped socks when he sat down. I love his shoes, but they also looked like they were a taupe color during the show- perhaps the lighting.

He was very lively during the faster songs, and was snapping his fingers and moving his body and it was HOT!!
The crowd was very very responsive. WHen he mentioned "Invisible" before the Jazzy medley, everyone cheered. Then he told them something about they were going to be disappointed. His face is very mobile and he had some adorable expressions.

He sang the jazzy medley and got applause for each song. When he got to Invisible he was standing right in front of me. He started singing- Watcha doing tonight- and he ran his tongue over his teeth and put this smoldering look  on his face. He was sending e'f's right into the audience on that one!! I almost dropped the phone!! And of course, the shirt tug!

I am not remembering the order of the songs, but he sat in front of us to sing "Misty" and when he hit those deep deep notes, my friend grabbed my arm and it was WONDERFUL

Autotune- he mentioned Ke$ha again, and someone else. Then Felix chimed in with "Jessica Simpson". THey did the Bieber song "Baby" and when it came to the chorus, he threw the lyrics on the floor, and went to each side of the stage and sang Baby Baby..... and really put his heart into it.

Suspicious Minds- he started singing and suddenly there was a huge screech from his microphone which was on the mic stand. He stopped dead and backed up with his mic in his hand. Still a lot of feedback so he grabbed Quianas and had the same problem. So he had both mics in his hand and was singing without them while swinging them around. He was giving dagger eyes at the sound guy. So then he got sound and stepped forward and yelled “What the Hell????” Then he finished the song. Everyone was laughing at him trying to sing without the mic, and the expressions on his face.

The Who's Sorry Now Styles
Soko- West African dance- Felix started the drumbeat, and Quiana started shimmying  her shoulders and she started singing, then Clay did the rrrrrrrrr and making guttural sounds.

Klezma (I think) Jewish dance- he mentioned it to Ben and Ben said did you pick me because I am Jewish?? (paraphrase),  Going blank on how he did it

Sousa March-they marched in place and did the song  similar to the last time.

Everyone was shouting out various styles and he caught Death Metal. He went to discuss with Quiana and people were still shouting out. So he told them he had already made the decision so stop yelling out more.

He started screaming “Who’s sorry now” exactly like death metal. Quiana was backing up and he was bending way over with the mic and screaming into it with his back to Quiana so she grabbed his shoulder and turned him around and they bumped chests together! It was so funny and he did great on it.

He did mention that his throat was a little hoarse.

He got back in to the show but I cannot for the life of me remember the order. Oh yes, Buttercup- he was feeling the music on this one,

I am not remembering the order of the songs, but he sat in front of us to sing "Misty" and when he hit those deep deep notes, my friend grabbed my arm and it was WONDERFUL

He kept moving his chair from one side of the stage to the other during the slow songs, because there were a bunch of people at the side who he said could only see Dells Butt.
When he sat in the middle he said he was getting whiplash moving his head from side to side to catch everyone.

He said that the southerners were very polite and clapped quietly, but that Northerners were more invigorating. Talked to a couple of men in the audience.

Clay is fabulous, He had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. His voice was great, only a couple of small bobbles. He really engaged the audience, men and women both. A LOT of men in the audience. One man was taking video and Clay told him that’s why his wife brought him along (paraphrase). The venue was pretty full. The empty parts were back behind Felix and Dell- except for about 7 or 8 rows. Don’t know how anyone could see from there- that’s where the man was seated that took video. There was also  two sections of the upper level that were pretty full.

He asked a young girl about a t shirt with him on it-she told him her Mom was selling the t shirts- he looked back and Ben and said “Call my manager”. But he said he wouldn’t pick on her because she had his face on her shirt.

In a fog and tired- cant remember anything else at the moment. Still have to pack for my trip to Keswick tomorrow morning.

I really want to go to ALL his shows- they move so fast.

Oh, and the security dude kept stooping down in front of us and checking out Scarlett. He had told her at the very beginning to put the camera away or he would take it away.

Westbury short recap:
What a night! I'll have more to post tomorrow but don't know when I'll get the chance, so wanted to say a few things tonight. There were alot of men! I brought one myself. The show was running about 15 minutes or so late. The band members had come out to set up and it was pretty quiet in the audience waiting for Clay. Some guy over in the middle section of the audience yells out "Come out of the closet Clay". At first there was silence and then he got booed. A man across the aisle from us answered loudly "Not cool young man." The man across the aisle had a boy with Downs Syndrome with him who got up and went down near the front to take a picture. He was sent back by the female usher (in a nice way). Anyway the man across the aisle was so supportive of Clay. He jumped up to give a standing O (as did many others) several times. When Clay was talking about people filming and listening for free and pointed out someone with the cellphone, the man said kiddingly we should shoot her. Basically he was defending Clay. I got a kick out of that.

I have had issues with DH and my fandom over the years, so I didn't know how tonight would go. I'm not going to say he was won over, but I did catch him clapping a couple of times and laughing as well. When we were leaving he said well his voice is ok but he sings other people's songs. THEN he adds, he seems like a nice guy though. Oh earlier he said "what's the matter with his hair? It's sticking up." Ha.

I had purchased PBS tickets and thankfully we had an aisle seat for DH, on the right in section F row K. Fortunately our seats were the first ones in the row so we were closer to the center. Clay stood and sat in front of our side alot.

"Where Do I Begin, Love Story Theme" got everyone on their feet I think, or clapping madly or something. (The fog sets in) It was absolutely stunning. If I had to pick favorites...it would be that, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", Crying, "Both Sides Now" and "In My Life" although everything was well done. I love love love the way the show started and ended.

I'm sure there were alot of fans there, but I think just as many NJU. Some of the people around me were hoping for Invisible etc. and not in the big band way, although they appreciated his medley.

Even though ticket sales haven't been the best, this tour has brought in a new crowd of people I think. I would hope that they leave with some respect for Clay Aiken so when they hear a remark about Clay they will say well you know I actually saw his show and he has a great voice or he's a nice guy and very funny.

I would have loved to hear people commenting when the show was over but we flew out of there

QUOTE (stpteach @ 26 February 2011 - 11:51 PM)
OY! Thank G-d you're not mad at me! Hee! Yeah, so it's a good thing I wore my white sweater. *g* I called Klezmir and at first he looked stupefied and then asked if it was some kind of an instrument, to which I promptly responded "NO!" He said something to Ben at some point, to which he responded, "Why, because I'm Jewish?" To which I responded "YES!" but by then my 7.5 seconds of fame were over. *g* Clay sang and I think he was trying to pull off of Yiddish accent (though to be honest, to me it sounded a lot like the Irish one...hee!) The best was Quiana's accompaniment and then her ending with a shout of "Oy Gevalt!" Clay then announced they were available for bar mitzvahs. I was v. v. happy, to say the least. And if anyone remembers anything else, please add it, 'cause my memory is mush!

Wonderful concert last night. A few things I want to mention. I was surrounded by NJU and this is what they had to say

"He's so funny!"

"He's so adorable!"

"You know, anybody can have a great voice and go up on stage and sing, but it takes a real talent to be that personable on stage."

In response to Clay stating that people are following along and listening in at home..."Really??? Wow! That's incredible!! That's great!"

I should also mention that I was sitting next to a couple who had never seen Clay before in concert. I thought the man was going to bust a gut while laughing. . There was also a group of teenage girls in front of me that were having the time of their lives.

It was a great experience to see so many NJU having such a great time.

I'm lucky to have walked up to the Westbury box office as soon as it opened yesterday, the day of the concert, and snag a 2nd row seat. It was impossible to buy, what we call, a "decent" seat on TM. I tried, and tried for weeks, but the same 2 seats kept popping up. As it was a theatre in the half-round, tickets were not sold to the side sections, as those would have been obstructed views. So, that would explain why the sides were empty.

I was happily shocked by the numbers of men milling about the lobby before we went into the theatre. Some, I'm sure, were dragged by their wives (t/m Clay), but all seemed excited to be there.

I sat directly behind 2 men who were a couple. They looked like they were having a wonderful time. I was so happy to see that.

Next to me was a couple who had never seen Clay perform before. They were Westbury VIP Members who were able to buy the tickets in advance of the regular ticket buyers. They explained to me that we were sitting in the VIP section, and that would be why those seats were never sold to the public. My seat became available last minute.

The couple only knew Clay from AI and had no idea what to expect. They loved him! The man never stopped laughing at the banter and they both looked entranced by Clay. Afterward, the woman told me she was so surprised that he was so entertaining, he had a wonderful voice, and they were so glad to have come.

I want more.

Westbury recap 2

During "Both Sides Now" and "In My Life" you could of heard a pin drop. The band played softly and the entire room was riveted to Clay's voice. I can't say enough about how beautiful he sounded. His speech before "In My Life" could be described as grateful and humble along with the funny. Great way to keep and add fans if you ask me. For DH to say well he seems like a nice guy shows that those words made it through to him.

I thought the band was great and as usual everyone was showcased at one time or another. Class act. Quiana never disappoints and I love the way she was brought out later in the show like she was more of a special guest than a back-up singer and rightly so. Love her.

I want to talk about across the aisle guy (AAG) who I mentioned in the first recap. He looked to be about 50-60 yrs old and was very funny talking with a bunch of guys sitting in the row in front of him. He had a dry sense of humor and would make funny blunt remarks. Honestly before the show started I was wondering if Clay would be able to reach these guys. Sooo when AAG started to leap out of his chair and clap and holler I was thrilled. He was the type who easily could have made nasty comments (we all know the type) but "Where Do I Begin, Love Story Theme" smacked all of them in the face right at the start with that voice. I know it smacked me! I think the song sounds good on the video but it is unreal live. Seriously.

The banter sections were fun and drew the audience in, people were laughing throughout the place.

I have to run..maybe more later.

Didn't like the Westbury venue although I did have front row seats thanks to Canfly. I sat next to Scarlett, and since the venue were being such butts, I spent half the night trying to watch out for them so couldn't relax. To me, I felt like they were more a distraction than anything else with their constant pouncing on me. They were mainly focused on video gatherers but also went after others too. What actually blew my fuse though was that after the show, and after Clay said he was fine with the clack and even told one usher to leave one person alone who either had a camera or cell phone, they still went up to Scarlett and told her she had to give up her tapes. And what further infuriated me was when the first guy had the nerve to say it was because of Clay's management. That's when I lost it and told him he was full of crap and that Clay even said on the stage that he was fine with it. Now normally I'm pretty even tempered and don't get rattled very easily, but watch out when I'm mad and when someone lies right to my face, I can rant pretty good. So while I'm venting, along with a few other Clay fans, I inadvertently gave enough of a distraction so that when they told Scarlett to go to the office, she took her stuff and walked straight out of the venue and up the hill. When YYG told me she was at the bus line after taking a taxi back down, I didn't believe her but that's what she did. For someone so cute and tiny, she has nerves of steel. She'd also managed to sneak out the clack to me and Playbiller before she even went up the aisle. She is truly an amazing woman.

My Recap of the 2/26/11 Westbury, NY Concert #133  [-]

(03/01/11 4:40 PM)
Reply Quote MoreRecent Posts  Where Do I Begin?
I will begin with our torturous cab ride from New Jersey to Long Island.  We hoped two hours would be enough time to get to Long Island, NY. We left at 6:00 pm and hit major traffic in NJ & NYC. The drivers GPS took us through every local street in Brooklyn and Queens with a pothole. I can definitely say that Mayor Bloomberg has some major work to do this Spring. I was afraid we would be late, but the driver assured me that we would be there on time. He was right, it all worked out and we arrived at 7:40 pm.
The opening of the show was a killer. I loved how the concert started with the overture, then Clay’s voice coming from behind the curtain and finally Clay coming out on stage singing the “Love Story Theme.” He looked gorgeous and his voice was so powerful. He performed the song like a character in a play telling the audience a story. His expressions and voice were very dramatic. It worked very well. I was overwhelmed and so was the audience. We gave him a standing ovation.
Fa Fa Fa Fashion
Clay was very fashionable in a white shirt, purple print tie, purple cashmere sweater and skinny leg gray pants with pinstripes, striped socks and taupe boots. My mother in law loved his outfit so much that she talked about it the next day to everyone in the family. It was a good thing he did not wear holy jeans. Jeans do not go over well with her. (LOL)
What the Hell Moments
Two geese were outside the building when we arrived. It looked like they were trying to get into the show, but they did not have tickets. (LOL)
A man in the audience yelled out something inappropriate before the concert began and he was booed by fans. It was neither cute nor funny.
Someone near the front of section B was selling Tee shirts.
During Clay’s performance of “Suspicious Minds,” the microphone had major feedback and then it blew out. Clay grabbed Quiana’s microphone and it had the same problem. As a professional, Clay kept singing while holding a microphone in each hand using them as props while he danced to the music. The sound came back on and Clay stopped and said, “What the hell?” and then finished the song. It was hysterical and a must see video.
Trying my best to explain to my mother in law and sister in law the reason why people are waving to each other from across the theater. My mother in law felt left out and she just started waving randomly. (LOL)
Clay calling out people talking on their cell phones during the concert and then trying to explain why.
 Musical Highlights
We enjoyed “Something About Us,” which both my sister in law and I feel is an underrated song and “Both Sides Now.” They were both sung with a lot of emotion. “Build Me up Buttercup” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” had us moving in our seats. Also the “Who’s Sorry Now” segment was a riot especially the death metal version.
Heartwarming Comments
Comments from my mother in law:  “He makes you feel so relaxed. He is calming. He is better than Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. They used to smoke and drink on stage. He is very charismatic. It was worth the trip from NJ.”
Comments from my sister in law:  “He has such magnetism and he is so funny. It is great how he talks to the audience. He does not have a mean bone in his body. Why are some people so mean to him? He is so considerate. He moved around the stage so everyone can see him. When is Clay touring again?”
More Clay in Our Life
It was very touching to hear Clay sing “In My Life” to us as the final song. It was a perfect ending to a very enjoyable concert. It left you wanting more. I know there will be more for Clay because he is extremely talented and he has so much more to offer the entertainment world. I will be waiting for it in my life.

I got to see his profile much of the night - which I love.  He was, as usual, magnificent.  I've never missed a concert before, and was afraid I would miss this one, but I got tickets last minute.  His last song sung to us - In My Life - really touched me - can't get it out of my head.

Just got home a little bit ago. Awesome concert!! I'll try to fill in some of the gaps/questions you guys had during the cellcert now that I've read through all the pages. The sounds heard right before it started, that someone said sounded like applause, was some people in the audience clapping to try and get the show started, and then there was booing.  Some jerk (man) said something really, really inappropriate right before it started. The idiot yelled  it out really loudly right before the overture started. The audience was not happy and booed the guy. He should have been kicked out. I hope that Clay didn't hear it.

On to happier things. For those wondering if Clay was moving around a lot, yes, he was. He was all over the place, but he had to be because of the circular stage. He walked from one side to the other so much that he probably lost a few pounds tonight! He had chairs at each side and took turns sitting on them as well as standing in the middle of the stage. Several times he said he was getting dizzy--he was really funny about it.

Yes, he said that the pipes broke this morning and that the place smelled like turnips and maintenance had to spray Febreze to try and get rid of the smell.

He talked to a husband who was videotaping while his wife watched the show. He couldn't get over how many men were in the audience, and seemed happy that they didn't seem to be ashamed to be there!

During the "real" version of SM, the mikes went nuts--lots of loud screeching. He switched mikes with Q, and hers did the same thing. At one point he had a mike in each hand and had them facing the floor. He then yelled "what the hell" and the audience cracked up. It was finally fixed and he was able to finish the song.

I hope there is video of WSN--the Brazilian and Klezmer were totally hysterical, especially the Brazilian. Really, really funny.

I already forgot the young, new guy's name (he was awesome). Clay asked what he did on his day off yesterday, and he said that he went to the Blue Note in the city (I think that's the name of it--I went once but not sure of the name. Jazz type club as I remember). Anyway, he was too young to get in and needed a fake ID. So Clay was teasing him about it and said that the young people in the audience shouldn't listen and get the idea that it was okay to do that.

I think that's it in regards to what I read here. He was awesome, looked great. His legs are so skinny--if I didn't love him so much I could really hate him for that!! He loved the energy the crowd had, and fed off of it. UM was awesome, and I fell in love with Love Story. Gave me goosebumps. Two guys sat in front of me and they had never seen him in concert. They don't have any of his cd's, haven't seen him on tv, and basically haven't heard anything about him since AI. They came because they were given free tickets from someone.  They both loved the show, loved Clay, and want to see him again. It was nice talking with them and seeing how much they enjoyed Clay doing his thing.

I'm exhausted, so please excuse any typos that I may have missed!! Time for bed--any guesses as to what I'll be thinking about as I try to fall asleep??!!

I've been trying to write this for days now, and I've never had enough time to sit down and do it all at once. Consequently, it got really long. Sorry about that. And it's way after the fact too, so not sure anybody really cares. But, since I finally got it written, here you go.

M&G Westbury

Jerome came to gather us M&Gers (9 of us) and gave us our directives (no touchy-feely.) Darn! Just when I was planning to pull an Arlene. Hee! He asked if we were ready to go. One brave lady mentioned going to the ladies room. Before you know it, at least half of us were running to the bathroom. Not like we were nervous or anything like that. We got back and reassembled ourselves in order (we each had a number) and off we went into the seating area of the theatre. We were heading down to the front row when , to the best of my knowledge, I believe a woman (maybe # 1 or # 2) must have mentioned that it was too steep for her and asked if we had to go the whole way down to the front. In any event, all I know is we abruptly stopped and did a left turn into a row about half way down in the section. We all sat down, took off our coats, pulled out our items to be signed and prepared to be dazzled. It was quite dark there stuck in the middle, so Jerome asked the venue folks to turn up the lights. They said “no can do” due to union rules. WTH? Sooooo, we gathered up all our stuff again, stood up, and trooped back up the aisle (like the good little soldiers we were) to the back row of the orchestra, where it was a little brighter. But, we realized that # 1 was now in the # 9 slot, due to the fact that we did not exit the row in the same direction from which we entered it. So, after some rather 3 Stooges-like stops and starts and backwards and forwards, we finally managed to reseat ourselves in the proper order. (However, our careful maneuvering ended up all for naught, as a 10th person came to join us as a late arrival and just like that, our order was shot to heck. Shucks! There went our gold star for M&G member perfect formation LOL!)

Anyway, Jerome left us there to go get the man. Soon he returned from the back of the stage with Clay and Mary in his wake. Clay actually hung out at the stage a bit, looking at a few things and moving the stools to his desired locations which, btw, worked INCREDIBLY well for me and my M&G buddy mercedes during the show, as he sat down right in front of us. [pause for fan-girly moment - EEEEEEE!] Finally he started toward the front edge of the stage and we could tell he was going to work his way up to us. There was a fairly deep step off the front of the stage onto the floor that led up to the aisle he would take to get to us. Next thing I know, he’s climbing onto Mary’s back piggy-back style to navigate the step down and she carried him a few steps up the aisle with his arms around her neck. [pause for insanely-jealous-of-Mary-moment] Of course, he’s so tall that his feet we’re practically dragging on the ground anyway! Watching this, I immediately started trying to formulate how I could innocently ask for the piggy-back pose for my picture, but I figured that wouldn’t go over so well, given the no touchy-feely mandate.

He strode up the aisle and stepped into the row below us saying hello as he did so. He then proceeded to move down the row asking each of us our names, and shaking our hands. When he was through, he made his way back to the center of the row and stopped directly in front of mercedes and me. Inside I was EEEEEEing like crazy, but like the mature, poised woman I am, I’m positive I looked calm and cool on the outside. [insert eye-rolling snort of sarcasm here] He had on hidden button-fly jeans, white sneaks, a gray tee shirt under a gray plaid shirt and a blue vest with brown trim on top. He asked where each of us was from, and when he heard that mercedes had an apartment in the city, he asked if he could use it when she wasn’t there – that it was too expensive to stay in a hotel in the city! I think I would have thrown my keys at him right then and there LOL!

With all those preliminaries out of the way, he launched into a story about how bad the venue smelled when they first arrived. He explained that evidently a pipe had burst, and the place stunk like . . . and he paused to find the right analogy to use and finally came up with “bad turnips.” He said once soundcheck was over he “ran out of the building – I mean literally ran. “ He turned toward Mary and said, “Didn’t I Mary? Didn’t I run?” Mary dutifully nodded her assent. He said it was so bad he thought he was going to throw up, and that Quiana had resorted to rubbing Vicks (I think it was Vicks) under her nose to distort the smell. He said it was much better now.

He asked us to get out our items to be signed and said that while he was signing, we could ask him questions. It is a bit disconcerting, as he’s getting handed the things to sign, asking how to spell the person’s name correctly, and still fielding questions all at the same time. He truly is a very talented multi-tasker. But, because of that set-up, it seemed people were a bit hesitant to ask questions. So, as he was right in front of me, I jumped right in. I had seen a question on CV that someone had suggested about the song Home that he sang at Broadway Backwards. So, I asked him if it was his idea to sing the song, or the producers of the show or whatnot. He said it was his idea. Several of us mentioned how gorgeous it was.
Someone else then asked if he’d go back on 30 Rock again? He said of course he would, but he would have to be asked. He mentioned that people don’t seem to get it. They seem to think that he has the ability to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He said that sounded like his mom, who had said to him “why don’t you just sing at the Grammys?”

Someone asked him how he kept from laughing during Spamalot when Tom Deckman and Rick Holmes were up there being so funny. He said “I didn’t – and I was supposed to be dead!” (or something to that effect – not sure of correct quotes)

There was a bit of a lull, so I jumped in again and told him that at the gala last year, he had promised our photo group that he would tell us what Arlene had said to him (we had asked him while having our group photo taken). He looked puzzled and said “I don’t think I know Arlene. Who is that?” I said the woman who molested you at the Chicago PBS concert. He said “Oh….OH!” as his eyes widened and it seemed to sink in who she was. He said “Did I promise to tell you?” Mercedes and I both nodded yes. He said he really didn’t remember what she said, but that it was “really dirty.” And, he followed that up by saying that she “had her hand down mah pants.” [pause for major OMG! moment] We all sort of involuntarily gasped and he went on to explain that “this part of her hand . . .” (as he showed us the tips of his fingers) had gone down the waistband of his pants in the back!! He said something to the effect of “that’s when I said I’m done here” and forcefully shook off her hand from his arm and disengaged himself from her. We all sort of expressed our disbelief that she had done that to him.

By now he had worked down the row and it was time for me to hand him what I wanted signed. Let me preface it by saying that mercedes and I had the same item, and we had gotten the idea in the wee hours of the morning after the Towson concert a few nights before. So I reached into my envelope and pulled out my Yoshi knife! (as did mercedes) I’m telling you, the man was sooooo excited! He looked at us and said “Did you use them yet? Aren’t they great? He asked where we wanted them signed, on the handle or on the blade? While we contemplated, we told him they were virgin Yoshi knives that hadn’t been used. He then told us he was going to sign them on the handle, so that way we could still use them. (yeah, like we’re going to do that. Mine went directly into my super-secret Clay drawer – the one that when I die and they find it, they’ll know just how bad I really have it!) Anyway, he was all animated and smiling as he told us he’d left the knife up on stage during the Towson concert. We said “we know” and “that’s where we got the idea” to have them as our signed item. He started telling us the story of how he brought his knife to soundcheck that day because he wanted to impress the others and see if it really did cut as well as it showed on TV. He said he threw an apple up in the air, let it fall, and threw the knife at the apple. “And it cut it right in half!!!” he said with such apparent glee on his face we just had to laugh. The knives have a protective sheath that they come with, and when I handed mine to him, I had the sheath on it. Mercedes was next and she had removed the sheath while she was contemplating where to have Clay sign it. So, she was holding it like that when Clay started to reach for it, then he quickly snatched his hand back and said how sharp the knives really are. “It’ll cut you!” he said to her. She put the sheath back on and he took it to sign. The woman on the other side of me said “be careful,” and he snarkily replied “Well the cover’s on it now” and then said “yes, mom.” We wondered if he had gotten the knife (and his and Quiana’s new iphones) in the mall next to the Sheraton that was next door to the venue. There had been a post earlier in the day that had spotted Felix there. But he said no, they had gotten them in Baltimore before getting into Towson.

Someone asked him a question (if memory serves me correctly?) if he could pull off a New York accent? He said he could, but not right at the moment. He said if he hung around a New Yorker for about a week, he’d have it down pat. He said he could learn to do pretty much any accent except an “American” accent. He said he doesn’t think he has much of an accent (at which point we snickered, and he laughed and pointed at mercedes and said something like “oh, like you don’t have an accent either.”) He went on to elaborate that since he doesn’t hear his own accent, it would be impossible for him to do an American accent, as he wouldn’t know what to change. I think he mentioned his British accent in Spam, and then somehow a Kiwi accent came up. He said he could do that, and told us that his favorite movie ever had people speaking in a Kiwi accent. Hee – I think he told us we could Google that to try and figure out what movie it is!

Finally, as no one else said anything, I piped up one more time and said that some of the fandom was in a tizzy, and that they were upset about the prospect of perhaps not seeing him for the rest of the year. So, I said the fandom just wants to know “will we see you in any capacity, other than the gala, for the rest of the year? We don’t need specifics, just wink once for yes and twice for no.” He sort of grinned, then purposely changed the subject by saying “and now on to pictures.” I turned to mercedes and jokingly said “he’s ignoring us” and he laughed and said “people ask the same question all the time about what I’m going to be doing.” Mercedes said “that’s because they need to know – they’re scared. Clay looked directly at her and asked “What are they scared of?” She answered, “that you’re going away.” It was an “Awwwwww” moment. He told us “I’m not going away. I mean, I don’t really want to be in the studio right now, but I’m not quitting.” Mercedes thanked him and said “That’s what we needed to know.” He looked straight at us and stated again “It’s not my decision to quit.”

Now it was time for pictures. While we were waiting in our proper numbered order, I reminded myself over and over again to lean in. Too bad I didn’t remind myself to look at the camera. I had managed to pretty much avoid the fog up to this point, but there’s something that happens when you’re standing beside the man. I leaned in (or so I thought, but I think I leaned more “back” than “in”) and I do recall feeling my arm around him and then I must have lost all cognitive function for a moment or two because I completely forgot they were going to take a picture. When I suddenly came to, what resulted was a panic-stricken, OMG-Mary’s-taking-a-picture-and-I’m-not-looking-at-the-camera, last-minute- corner-of-my-eye sort of look. I do remember smiling, as that seems to be the default expression (sort of a vapid grin) when I’m around the man. Shades of Jack Nicholson in that demented One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest photo we always see where he’s looking sideways with an evil grin. Hey, it’s a good look if one can pull it off. I don’t recommend it for a M&G picture, though.

Sadly, with pictures now taken, our time had come to an end. After stepping aside after my picture, I had moved out of the way and was standing just inside a row of the aisle close to where we had posed for our pictures. Jerome began to lead Clay out, and luckily they started walking down the aisle in which I was standing. I had regained enough mental capacity by then so that I and a few others were able to get a hug from him on his way out. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

If you’ve made it this far, I’m impressed at your fortitude. I guess my final summation is this: I’m not sure why I, a reasonably intelligent and articulate person (reasonably being the operative word there) turn into an immature, simpering, obnoxious idiot when the man is around. But, I’m willing to have more opportunities to find out. All in the name of research, y’all.

mercedes clarified:

If its ok I will speak for ncwannabe. He said he is not quitting and in no way did he sound like someone else had the power. He looked at us and said," well, I am not quitting." This was in response to me saying I was worried and we don't want him to go away. He wasn't sharing any other info but he wanted us to know he is not going anywhere. I hope this helps...

Hi!

I had signed off of CV here at work and I'm trying hard to get out of here, but I looked at my Blackberry and saw there is a bit of a question about his last statement in my recap. So I logged back on!

I, in no way whatsoever, took the statement to be anything other than him trying to make it perfectly clear that he is not quitting. I think he stated it in that manner because he wanted it to be clear that he had not entertained such a decision. I also had absolutely no impression that he was being pressured by outside forces to quit

Matter of fact, I think he may be more determined than ever to stay in the game. I think he now considers this his career - a career in which he fully intends to excel. Maybe in the first few years it was more of a lark, but he's learned a lot and I now think this is his life and this is what he does and this is what he is - an entertainer.
