This is by no means a complete list of the print media that has featured or included Clay since the end of AI.

Your help would be appreciated in order to make it complete though.  If you have any national print media that is not on this list, please PM me with the name, issue date, story title and a brief review of the article and pictures.  I will add it to the list.

Thanks!
*******

Clay & Ruben:  America's Newest Idols -Platinum Celebrity Series special publication.  Picture of Clay and Ruben on the cover.  Exclusively Clay, Ruben and AI focused.  Rehashed stats and pictures.

Collegiate Standard Summer 2003 -'The Idol From UNCC' Why women all over the globe have fallen under the spell of Clay Aiken.  Clay is on the cover.

People May 26 -'AI - Their Untold Story,' Clay, Ruben and Kim Locke on the cover. 'Backstage secrets, can the voting be rigged?, inside their private lives, what's next for Simon?'

People June 9 -'Flying Without Wings,' article mostly about Ruben, includes some pictures with Clay. Courtney Cox/Jennifer Anniston on the cover.

Rolling Stone July 10 - 'Growing Up Clay.'  Clay on the cover!
Great article and pictures. Best selling RS cover in five years.  A collector's item!

Time Oct 13 -'The Making of Clay Aiken.' War Over the Leak on the cover.  'Building a Better Pop Star.' Controversial article with 'vanilla revolution' reference and the claim 'The record industry needs a savior.  AI runner-up Clay Aiken could be it. Hey suegrab!
The People issue was the 'Best and Worst Dressed' issue.  There was no article, just a before and after picture of Clay - the before picture was the Atlanta audition picture (in which he looked just fine to me) and the after picture was the one when he is wearing the white suit (in which he looked just fine to me).
I don't know if the pictures are online; but I'll try to find them for you!

I believe it's actually the issue that will be on the stands the week of October 13.  I made it more clear in the post above.  I'm so sorry I got your hopes up!  The CD is released on October 14 and the People magazine that week will have a story about Clay.

Keep checking, and thanks for bringing that to my attention.

  US Weekly shockingly misleading headline
« Reply #5 on: October 24, 2003, 02:19:49 AM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

O Boy!  :

Has anyone seen the two-page article about Clay in the recent US Weekly magazine? I was so surprised to turn the page and see a headline,

"Is Clay Ready to Crack?"

The main picture is the great one of him sitting on a bathroom floor, and the focus of the article is the way Clay's new life in the spotlight is wearing on him....can he survive, etc.

I read it through a few times because the first time I read it, I came away feeling that he seemed on the verge of a breakdown! But after a second and third reading, I came away with a more positive take.

The article talks about how the lost anonymity, the endless press interviews, appearances, etc., and the lack of sleep have all combined to create a very stressful existence, one that Clay hasn't yet reconciled.

It goes on to mention the recent death of his stepfather, the loser of a biological father, and the death of his half-sister by suicide years ago, are still weighing on him and that all the sudden fame threatens to break him.

But the writer ends by pointing out what will most likely save him...the very things that have caused him to be such a sensation, that have pushed him to such demand by a loving public--are his self-esteem, self assurance, faith, strength of character, belief in family. These are the qualities we all saw in him throughout the AI competition and they were not false. He is staying true to himself through the madness and THAT is what will keep him safe.

Interesting, isnt' it? When we read about the pressures of celebrity, we are usually reading about some "star's" negative behavior--trashed hotel rooms, raves that got out of hand, accidental shootings, erratic and disruptive behavior in airplanes, public drunkeness or lewdness, violence, etc. This type of "coping" by our so-called "idols" have become a shocking standard, almost expected behavior of celebrities and somehow that shock value has lessened to the point of being considered "normal".

So here comes Clay, admitting that upon waking up in a hotel room, not knowing where he was because of his insane schedule and realizing that he couldn't just go for a walk because he would be recognized and mobbed--he CRIED for a while and then was ok.  :  He said he'll just have to take things "one week at a time".

Omigod! He CRIED?!?!?!? Is this the behavior that has US Weekly worrying about him "cracking"? To those writers who constantly intimate physical weakness with adjectives like "dorky, geeky, skinny, etc.", I offer you this question:

Who is stronger--the muscle bound, tattooed rocker who drowns his pain in drugs and drink with consequences that sometimes hurts others?

Or the "geek" who, after endless interviews, demands and expectations, after laying open painful secrets and repeatedly laying open his soul in his songs, after constant travel, hotel rooms and little sleep, gets up to read to second grade kids in between appearances for the masses?

I am so grateful that I have him to share as a role model for my own kids.

So I am sending silent positive vibes to Clay of love, strength, support and comfort, but it's not because I believe he is going to "crack", but because I believe Clay when he says "I Will Carry You" and believe that his insistence on naming his CD "Measure of a Man" was prophetic.

He says, "I had a roommate who reused toilet paper. He left it on the counter once." EWWWWWWW Poor Clay. lol funny quote though. I thought y'all would enjoy this!
Lots of Love!

Closetclayfan, what a beautiful post.  I have not read the article but have certainly heard mentions of the lack of sleep, privacy, etc., and no doubt the adjustment must be something one cannot even imagine.  I believe his faith, strength of character and focus will help him through, but like many others who love Clay, I say a prayer for strength, wisdom and protection for him.  And we and Clay will have to put up with more than a few "misleading" articles, too, as Clay becomes more recognized as a draw to sell.  We're with you, Clay!

I just finished reading the article in the Examiner titled
CLAY's HEARTBREAK.  It' referring to him supposedly getting booed at the World Series.  I've watched my tape of him singing it several times now and those were not boo's.  The crowd even cheered loudly when he held that note towards the end of the Anthem.

To quote the last paragraph from the article:

"CLAY IS A TERRIFIC SINGER WHO CAN HANDLE JUST ABOUT ANY KIND OF SONG.  BUT HE NEEDS A THICKER SKIN TO LIVE UP TO HIS POTENTIAL -- OTHERWISE THIS BUSINESS WILL DESTROY HIM"

I have to agree with that statement.  With all the negative critism Clay gets he has to ignore it and not let it bother him.  I really don't think it affects him as they say it does.  Clay handles himself remarkably well through everything.  Clay is sure of himself and he knows his fans adore him.

:? I was glancing at The Star as I stood in the Checkout line and the first page I flipped to had a pic of Clay singing the National Anthem and it said that he forgot the words halfway through!  What idiots some of these reporters are - they don't know that you are supposed to pause out of respect when the jets fly over (and, also, we can't even imagine how loud the jets were if you were actually there), and that Clay was told to please pause for that.  I've read many reports saying that the crowd booed Clay also - the stupid reporters don't realize the crowd was yelling "Boone", "Boone", "Boone", for their star player. (I wrote a complaint to US News about an article thier reporter did bashing Clay.)  Clay said in an interview that he had a ball at the World Series and was treated like royalty and that he sat up in a private sky box for much of the game.  This all just proves to me that you can't automatically believe everything you read in print...

In Touch Weekly:  November 10 issue.  Tagged a Hot Story.  The headline reads Has Clay found his Miss Right With the subtitle, The singer's beauty queen tells In Touch how the Idol hero will make the perfect husband.    Miss Oklahoma, Kelly Scott, is said to have told the magasine that she can hardly wait to go on a date with him.  The article concludes that the ball is in  Clay's court .  "We haven't spoken since the Miss America Pageant," Kelly says wistfully. "We'll just have to wait and see if he calls."
Interesting to note the magazine says,

Quote
With his boyish good looks and gentle disposition, Clay has become one of the nation's most eligible bachelors..

I love this picture of Clay and Kid Rock. They both look like a couple of good ol' boys having a great time at the AMA. Have you noticed that all the big celebrities have a genuine big smile when they are being photographed with Clay. Clay has this ability to make anyone he meets feel comfortable enough to smile big for the camera. :D

Have you seen the latest Christian Music Planet Magazine? Clay's on the cover, has the main feature article and there is a review of his book!

I get the subscription, but if you don't get the mag you can order a copy of just the Clay issue for $3.99. The demand was so high people were paying $50 on Ebay a weeek ago, so the people at CMP decided to sell individual copies through their website. Definately worth checking out. I love the "5 Things Clay Won'y Budge On!"
