1-7-04 :: Tour Announcement from Clay !

It's official. After weeks of speculation and message boards full of rumors, I'm excited to announce that Kelly Clarkson and I are joining forces to co-headline a national tour, beginning late-february. We are thrilled about sharing the stage for this momentous next step in both of our careers! We are working hard to confirm dates and locations. As soon as we know we will pass them along to you first. Keep your eyes out for the news on the ONLY official sources for information - www.clayaiken.com AND www.clayonline.com.
Health, love and happiness.
Clay

This thread is for all discussion of Clay's upcoming but yet to be announced concert tour, possibly and most likely with his label mate Kelly Clarkson.  Of course we don't have any dates, or cities, or details of any kind as of yet, but hey!  We don't need no stinkin details!

Speculation, prediction, wailing and happy dancing are all welcome.  We will have dissected, analyzed, chewed up and spit out any and all thoughts, ideas and yes, even facts! before we have finished.

So please post any and all information, dreams, desires, wishes and even actual facts here.

But most importantly, have fun!

RUMORED CONCERT DATES

March 13 - Schottenstein Center, Columbus, OH
March 31 - Arco Arena, Sacramento, CA

I'll go first!  Did you know the artist has to cover the majority of expenses while on tour?  Did you know the artist also reaps most of the profits while on tour?  Here's an article I found about the contractural obligations of some artists while on tour.  It refers mostly to hip hop artists, but it still provides an interesting basis for discussion of the finanacial aspects of touring.

Concert CashForget CD Sales — the Real Money for Hot Acts Is in Concert Tours
By Peter Kafka, Forbes.com
Special to ABCNEWS.com
July 11

In 100-degree heat, the crowd starts to build in front of a Las Vegas nightclub two hours before the doors swing open. By 9:30 p.m., 1,500 sweaty people are packed inside, where it's almost as hellish as it is outdoors.

Onstage, though, Jay-Z barely breaks a sweat. The languid rapper, who has accessorized a military-style T-shirt with diamond-encrusted dog tags, gets his fans to do much of the work: They rhyme along with him during each song, finishing his verses when he holds out the microphone. One hour later the rapper walks offstage, working his way through the kitchen. His entourage of 20 retires to the green room to joke and pass around vodka. Jay-Z enters a separate suite and sits, alone, with two bodyguards parked out front. Graced with the requisite rapper scowl, the predictable rap sheet and an ear for a catchy hook, Jay-Z will repeat this ritual through the summer on a much larger, more lucrative scale. The club show is a warm-up for the 33-city Rock the Mic tour he is headlining with 50 Cent, the muscled, glowering rapper du jour. Touring with them are the hyperactive Busta Rhymes, the playful Missy Elliott and several other acts. Playing to crowds of 20,000, Jay-Z should net around $100,000 per performance, or more than $1,000 per minute onstage. That's $3.3 million or more for a summer of work, good pay even for Jay-Z, who has sold 30 million records. Musicians of every stripe will make a pile of money touring this summer. The Dixie Chicks, the country crooners who came under fire for opposing the war in Iraq, sold more than $45 million in tickets for 57 shows in less than a week. Eminem, the white-rapper-turned-actor who sold more discs last year than any other musician, sold $5.2 million worth of tickets to 88,000 people for two upcoming sold-out shows at Ford Field in his home city of Detroit. Graying geezer groups reap the biggest riches, bankrolled by baby boomers who can afford stiff ticket prices. You could see The Who for free at Woodstock in 1969; last year tickets to see the band's two surviving members creak onstage sold for an average of $77 apiece. The loftiest perches on Pollstar magazine's annual list of highest-grossing acts are held mostly by aging rock stars: Last year Paul McCartney ($103.3 million), who charged a top ticket price of $250, the Rolling Stones ($87.9 million) and Cher ($73.6 million) topped the charts. McCartney plowed through 90 dates in 14 months, playing two-and-a-half-hour shows for half a million people in Rome, 100,000 in Moscow's Red Square and 35,000 in the Beatles' birthplace of Liverpool, U.K. By the time the Eagles wrap up the 40-date first leg of their supposedly last tour, dubbed Farewell I (wink-wink), they will have earned at least $30 million in guarantees — before T-shirt sales. Even Cher, whose own farewell tour has stretched out for more than a year, will stay on the road through the end of August, flanked by the mechanical elephant that appears on stage with her. Labels Seek Slice of Concerts The concert business has never been bigger, in dissonant contrast to the recorded-music business. While music sales have dropped for three years in a row, from $13 billion to $11.5 billion in 2002, hurt by Napster-style digital piracy and a lackluster flow of hot new acts, the tour business has climbed for four years straight, from $1.3 billion in 1998 to $2.1 billion last year. Thus musicians increasingly rely on road shows for their income. Performers frequently moan about never seeing a royalty check from their record label, no matter how many discs they sell. But a top concert draw can take home 35 percent of the night's gate and up to 50 percent of the dollar flow from merchandise sold at the show. The labels get none of it. "The top 10 percent of artists make money selling records. The rest go on tour," says Scott Welch, who manages singers Alanis Morissette and LeAnn Rimes. Now the music labels, hungry for revenue from any source, are mulling over whether to make a grab for a piece of the tour biz. One company already has: In October EMI Recorded Music signed a deal with Brit singer Robbie Williams that gives the label a cut of the pop star's merchandise, publishing, touring revenue and sponsorship. Williams, unknown here but huge everywhere else, is a former boy-band star who has sold 26 million records since 1995 and regularly sells out concert crowds. His current European tour includes three nights at England's cavernous Knebworth Stadium, where he will cavort in front of 150,000 people each night. Hence EMI's willingness to pay him an estimated $20 million for a 25 percent stake for his nonmusic revenue, in addition to hefty per-album advances. EMI officials say they are pursuing similar deals with other musicians, both superstars and new acts. Other label executives are eyeing the idea, albeit less openly. Vivendi's Island Def Jam may create a tour division. At Sony Music, before he left the top job earlier this year, the embattled Tommy Mottola is said to have asked several top acts to share the wealth; they demurred.

I am just dying to find out more about Clay's tour.  I can hardly wait to find out the dates and places.  Please God let Cleveland be on the list.   My friend and I are going to see the play Saturday Night Fever in February.  We got tickets to a matinee because I don't know when Clay's tour will be.  I don't want to have a Clay conflict of interest.  Clay always comes first.  Until I find out the details, I don't want to make any other plans.

Here is the official fan club statement about any upcoming tour situations:

Quote
Information about tours, appearances, releases, etc., will be announced when they have been confirmed. Please be aware that many people have been spreading rumors, even if unintentionally, throughout the internet community. Unless posted on an official site or from an official source, please remember that they may or may not be true!

This can be found in the new Fan Club Corner thread in the News & Appearances forum.

Not to spread any additional rumors, but since we don't yet have any facts ....  :

The tour may be between 20-30 cities and take place in March and/or April.  There are lots of venues across the country trying to be on that list of cities...and it's possible the concerts will be held at smaller arenas, up to 5000 people. There will most likely be some kind of AI connection with the tour.    :(

Those are the speculations I have heard.  My own opinion is that Clay by himself could sell out a larger arena, especially if they limit the tour to 25 dates.  It has already been proven with the AI tour and the December mini-tour that Clay fans will fly around all over the country to see him sing.  So although I understand the logistical reasons for having a double billing on the tour, I don't see how it would be absolutely necessary to insure a successful tour.

As far as Kelly goes, it may be true that there are some 'overly enthusiastic' Clay fans who wouldn't be at their most polite best in the double headlining situation (unfortunately I have witnessed some of the painted face booligans); and the reverse may be true of some Kelly fans as well.  But it seems a small gesture would be all it takes to end this silly fan war.

If Clay and Kelly made a joint statement of solidarity through their fan clubs or on their websites, perhaps both sides in this little border war would lay down their verbal assault weapons.  This petition and all the drama surrounding the rumors about the concert-that-hasn't-even-been-announced-yet seem like a total waste of good energy to me.

Don't do what I did!

I live in Mpls/St. Paul area. When the AI concert came around I didn't get tix. I was experiencing an internal battle of not wanting to be part of such a cheesy show (reviews of AI1 were still ringing in my ears yet I watched every single episode of AI2 with all the dedication of a religious zealot) and really wanting to see Clay.

I didn't have anyone to go with and so I just let it go.

How do you say "duh????"

Then, just by luck, I had to go to Charlotte for work over the same weekend the AI tour hit. I got tix right away and paid BIG BUCKS to sit in the 6th row. I went all by myself but bonded with the lady next to me (she got to meet Clay during a pre-show radio gig and said he was NOT effeminate!).

Did I say BIG BUCKS?

Well, needless to say, if he ever comes around, go for it before you end up paying dearly for it - either in $$$$ or in regret for not having done what you could to see the show the first time around.
.
.
.

I could have easily done without ALL the other idols. I think they're cute, but that's about it, and I would LOOOVVVEE to see Clay alone. I'm not thrilled about the Kelly Clarkson partnership idea either ... I think she's cute, too, and she has a fabulous voice, but I want to see Clay ALL ALONE.

There's something wierd and possessive about that, but to have him all alone makes me shiver in anticipation!

TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE THAT HAVE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE CLAY LIVE IN CONCERT, BY ALL MEANS DO.  I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE HIM TWICE.  ONCE WITH THE AI TOUR AND THEN AGAIN AT THE CLEVELAND KISSMAS CONCERT.  THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT.  WHEN CLAY WALKS ON THE STAGE AND THE PLACE ERUPTS WITH SCREAMS, YOU GET CHILLS, YOUR HEART BEATS FASTER, AND YOU'RE IN HEAVEN.
AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, MONEY IS NO OBJECT. I WILL PAY ALMOST ANY PRICE TO SEE HIM AGAIN. (WITHIN REASON OF COURSE)
I HOPE CLEVELAND IS ON HIS TOUR SCHEDULE BECAUSE I'M THERE.
IT IS JUST AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE.  IF YOU DON'T GO, YOU'LL REGRET IT.

I have had the experience of seeing him once in Massachusetts.  What a performance.  I live in Connecticut and hope his tour brings him here again but will travel to other states to see him.  I can't wait to find out when and where his tour will be.  I know this has to be the year for me to see Clay again and will do anything to achieve that and will make it my primary new years resolution.

I AM WAITING NERVOUSLY FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A TOUR.  I MADE A HUGE MISTAKE WHEN THE AI2 TOUR CAME TO PHILA. AND I DID NOT GO.  I HAVE A PRETTY SEVERE VISION PROBLEM AND I WAS CONVINCED I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING SO I LET IT GO.  I AM SICK ABOUT IT.  BUT, I AM WILLING TO PAY THE BIG BUCKS IF I NEED TO TO GET SEATS CLOSE ENOUGHT TO SEE AND HEAR.  IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.  ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET GOOD SEATS--MONEY NOT AN OBJECT AT THIS POINT.

This is my first post, but I have read daily many of your remarks.  All of them which I agree with.  I have decided to not be silent any longer as during a discussion last night about Clay touring gave me this wonderful idea.  My suggestion for the tour would be have Clay tour with Kimberly Locke.  They both sing wonderfully together and I think that the concert would definitely be enthusiastically received by both Kimberly and Clay fans more so than with Kelly Clarkson.   Just a suggestion, but I think I am going to write to RCA and give them my thoughts!  Let me know what some of you Clay fans think!!

LJensen, what a great idea!!

I don't know if it would be a problem because they are on different labels.  Don't you know how much fun that would be for both of them too!

OH and here's a tip for everyone who is waiting patiently (or impatiently) for news about the tour.

Go to TICKETMASTER and register.  Once you are registered, enter 'Clay Aiken' in the search box.

Then, you can sign up for an email notification from Ticketmaster when they add Clay tour information to their site.  It's called 'Ticket Alert' and you will see a place to sign up for it with your email address.

It's a good thing

I, too, like Jexter, thought that the show was going to be cheesy so I did not purchase tickets for the Cleveland show.  However, the closer it got, I had a change of mind but the seats to Cleveland were sold out.  God shined down on me and I was able to get tickets to the Buffalo show just days before they were to perform there (imagine my surprise).  My sister, a friend and I took the three or so hours drive to see him.  The performance was great and I made friends with the family that was sitting next to me who also traveled from another city.

A coworker had tickets to the Cleveland show (which was after the Buffalo show) and took ill and could not go so he offered his tickets for sale.  Once again, I was fortunate enough to be the first to email him for the tickets.  The Cleveland tickets were better seats than I had in Buffalo and I was able to enjoy the show much more.

If you can get tickets early, do not hesitate.  You will really enjoy the show more up close and personal.

I, unfortunately, have not seen Clay in concert.  :( I really wanted to see the AI2 when they came to Chicago, but didn't. Hopefully Clay will stop in Chicago when he goes on tour. (Even after his bad incident!)  I wish I were lucky enough to get to meet him personally. Maybe some way I will be able to.   :D

I love discussing the tour because it is the only way right now I can feel that much closer to Clay.  I don't think he can hit every city in the country, but that is what we would all like.  It will probably be a 2 or three hour drive for most of us, maybe even a plane.  I give those fans a lot of credit for flying to see him.  I would too if I had that kind of money.  In a heartbeat.  I saw him in Worcester, MA last year, but he has gained so much more confidence since then; although, he was pretty outspoken on the stage at the time.  He is just a natural when it comes to talking to the audience.  I don't think he is as comfortable on some of these award shows and rightly so, most of the other entertainers have foul mouths and no morals.  Clay is a perfect gentleman who deserves better company, but when an award is involved, he knows he has to put up with it.  When it comes to tours, though, I think he just loves the screams and cries for him.
I am going crazy with Clay withdrawal.  I come from CT, but whatever it takes, I too will follow for this tour.  I think he could carry it alone too, but he would probably be less tired if there was a group, band or at least one other person singing.  We want our Clay in good health.  So, is Ruben going tour first?  Does anyone know?

I love Clay's band.  They seem to have lots of chemistry and lots of fun!

I hope the same band that has been playing with him is with him on the tour, wouldn't that be amazing!

I heard that Clay may play some venues solo and other venues with Kelly or someone else.  It matters not to me; as long as he comes to Raleigh!

That's one thing I'm not worried about.

I have one city to suggest Albuquerque, New Mexico
I would like to have the opportunity to hear Clay sing.  If only my ears would have such privilege. Once more
Albuquerque!

Clay can you hear me? ( back ground music)
just in case nobody get this, I'm copying Rosie O'Donell when she first

'Idol' wiles in Sacramento? Tour might be at Arco Arena in March
By David Barton -- Bee Staff Writer

Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken might bring their joint tour to Arco Arena this spring.

It has yet to be announced, but we're hearing through the grapevine that American Idols Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken will be performing together at Arco Arena on March 31.

Clarkson was the winner of the first "American Idol" in 2002 and Aiken was the runner up in 2003 -- though he's gone on to have greater commercial success than the winner, Ruben Studdard.

Aiken even won a Billboard award last month for having the best-selling single of 2003, "This Is the Night"/"Bridge Over Troubled Water."

The tour has yet to be announced, even nationally, and neither singer's official Web site lists any dates (though Aiken's notes that he's due to tour in early 2004).

But we're very confident in our source, who hasn't steered us wrong yet. We'll keep you posted on ticket prices and an on-sale date.

Hi Lillian,

It is nice to hear from another Clay fan in Connecticut.  I am sure there must be lots of them around because when the AI tour came to Hartford, Ct. they were sold out.  I had to go to Massachusetts to see him.   I sure hope he comes this way when he tours.  I have really been taken by this guy.  I am 53 years old and can't understand how Clay has just taken over my life.  But on the other hand, I can.  His music just makes me feel so alive and at my age that is saying a lot.  He is one very special person inside and out and I really support him and hope he makes it even bigger in 2004.

I was so thrilled when I heard the news that Clay was going to tour, I haven't been to a concert in so long (well, maybe not, just 3 years) that I kinda forgot what it was like to feel the energy of the performer and feed off of that and that your adrenaline is skyrocketing, concerts are such a rush! But, anyways, I hope and pray Clay comes to Cleveland because I would LOVE to see him live and I'm sure it'd be one heck of a show!  :)

Hi  Lillian.  :D I've got you by a couple of years. I was 62 last August. However, Clay makes me feel like a teen ager again. Haven't been so excited about a performer in years and years.  Fell in love with him the moment I heard his voice trailing from the living room, through the dining room and into the kitchen where I was cleaning up.  I went running to see where that voice was coming from. It was coming from this incredible young man that we're all in love with. Took me back to my passion for Buddy Holly. I owned every record he ever recorded and knew every word of every song.  He too, was not the typical glamour boy but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  The old saying that beauty comes from within is so very true. Glad to know there are others here from my "era" even if we're on opposite sides of the country! My entire family are Clay fans. All 19 of them! (four married children and 11 grandkids) Whoops, fogot my 84 yr. old mother and my sister. Crazy about Clay!

HAD TO RESPOND TO THIS.  I GOT A KICK OUT OF HEARING THAT YOU HAD NOT BEEN TO A CONCERT IN 3 WHOLE YEARS.  WELL, HOW ABOUT, THE LAST CONCERT I SAW WAS IN 1968---THE DOORS AND BEFORE THAT 1965 IN NY--THE BEATLES AT SHEA STADIUM!!!!!!!  NOW THOSE OF US OVER 50 WILL REMEMBER THOSE.  AND LIKE A 54 YEAR OLD CLAYMANIAC, I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS CONCERT. MY DAUGHTER AND I WHO IS 21 ARE GOING NO MATTER WHERE IT IS.  MY HUSBAND CAN'T DECIDE.

Ok,I can now officially make it through this long cold dreary Ohio winter knowing that Clay "may" come to the Schott in Columbus in March.  I would have driven to Cleveland, Indy or even further, but now I can get my Clay fix in town.  The Schott is a great arena for concerts.  Hope the rumor is true!  I'm suffering through pretty serious Clay withdrawal right now.

I am so ready to cry right now.  :(   I just saw the concert dates and I am going to be in Florida on vacation the same week Clay is going to be in Southern California!!   My 12 year old daughter is definitely going to cry over this.  I have been waiting for this for so long and now it finally comes and I have to miss it.  Oh, well.  When he headlines his own tour I will definitely not be out of town for that. :( :( :(

Hey guys - I was just on Dana and friends geocities site and they have posted a listing of the concert dates and venues - and Oh no!!! it looks like Toronto isn't on the list!!!! What will we Claynadians do if this is true ???? Can anyone verify if the official list is out there ? I thought that it wasn't being announced until Monday the 19th ( looks like the next closest place to Toronto- Buffalo isn't on the list either - oh well if it's final and true - I guess we'll have to do a lot of travelling to see OMC - maybe we can meet up with some of you fellow claymaniacs - when we venture down to your state for the concert. Anyone with info PLEASE  let me know!!!!!

Thanks

Lainey( it's really cold -40 c., and snowy here in Toronto - we need some good news to brighten our lives here - always hopeful!!!)

It is hard to believe this is a completed list.  The only Texas site is a smaller arena in Grand Prarie Texas.    I don't think they will be able to fit the Burleson Crowd much less Clay fans.

It's hard to believe someone would schedule Detroit  on Mar 11th then Winston Salem NC. Mar 13 then Grand Prairie on Mar 19.  Looks like some of cities in the center of the country got missed so they could cover a third venue in NC.

If this sounds like sour grapes it is because it is.    How could they leave Houston out???  Leveland I am really upset for you and the rest of the Houston and south Texas fans.  Even if you were willing to drive to Dallas the arena they picked will not handle the whole Texas Clay contengency.  I doublt if it will handle the Dallas group, and if the bunch from Oklahoma heads south ( OKC isn't on the list either) since Dallas is closer than KC and St. Louis.

I am hoping and praying that between Winston-Salem and St. Louis there could be more venues.

I just went to a site called Kelly Clarkson Express.  They state she is doing a Rodeo show with Hilary Duff in Austin on March 17.  That's is why their are no south Texas venues.   They could have one at College Station or hell just have a Clay concert the same nights as those Rodeos and reverse the towns.  Houston on March 17 and Austin on March 16.

Can't see why the Clay fans have to suffer or should Clay financially.

Hey Texas claymaniacs - I hear you and feel your pain - looks like there  is no Toronto concert - or even Buffalo or Pittsburgh - Detroit is the closest for us - I see lots of travel in my future. As the old song goes - " I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go" That voice demands sacrifice - so if I have to travel thousands of km ( sorry I'm Canadian - hundreds of miles - so be it)
Seems like there are a few days off in the middle of the tour - although I'm glad Clay may get some much needed rest  - the selfish claymaniac part of me wishes he could fill those dates by coming somehwere close to you and us and any other Clay place that feels left out right now.
At least we will be able to get our hands on the Solitaire / the  Way single
soon enough.

Stay strong Clay friends ! Clay is always in our hearts and souls.

MEET AND GREETS

I've had lots of PMs about 'meet and greets' at the concert, so I thought I would address it here so I don't have to answer each of you individually.  (Sorry, but thanks for understanding!)

I honestly don't know if there will be backstage passes issued, or formal meet and greet sessions planned.  They are sometimes arranged by the local radio stations so you might want to contact them and ask if they will be sponsoring one.

I do know that during the AI concert, formal meet and greets were held before the concert at the venue itself.  You had to show up early in the afternoon and get in line and get a wristband or some kind of pass in order to participate.

I assume we'll know after the first concert and you can then decide accordingly if you want to pursue that venture.  Since I'm not really a 'meet and greet' kind of gal, I don't have any experience with this... wish I could help more!

I would suggest using a mapping program to plot your course around town if you are visiting an unfamiliar city for the concert.

Two good programs are MAPQUEST and MAPBLAST.
