The CH is up and running, though the quality isn't as good. A man and woman are talking (not Quiana or Clay) about the origins of professional musical theater in Raleigh. They just introduced Quiana. Sounds like Clay's on stage, too.

Introducing Quiana? Is she going to sing, now? Clay's talking about the first time for something. Gotta assume it's theater

Artquest at CH:

Clay's talking about his first experience watching musical theater and then, 25 years later, meeting that actor when he went to watch Spamalot. Says he always wanted to play Huck in Big River, but singing a song from that show is what he's going to do now.

Singing with Lauren Kennedy. It sounds gorgeous, though a little underwater.

Quiana is rocking the house with "Don't Rain on my Parade." They certainly gave her a nice selection of show stoppers.

Clay's coming up next with "What Kind of Fool." He'll need to kick it out of the park. Who am I kidding - He can certainly do it.

They threw their shoes at Quiana.

Terry Mann threw his jacket. He must have connections on Broadway, I hope he can get her at least an audition.

Ficus giving recap

It was an absolute incredible show. They were thrilled they were there.

They were front row center, they couldn't hear a lot of the talking parts.

Clothing:

Jacket with thin lapels. Light charcoal gray and the pockets were a little shinier

Dark gray tie, white shirt.

Dark charcoal gray pants on

Striped socks on (they matched)

She thinks he got a haircut and there was stubble. (She didn't see any of the recent interviews). He looked good. Maybe just a little trim.

She hasn't seen Scarlett yet.

Clay was describing how he auditioned for 1776 but you had to be 21 and he was 17. Terry told him to sing a song and Clay did. Terry asked "who was that stick standing there?" He sang and blew them away.

When Terry Mann started singing Where's the Girl, he sang to Lauren, Q and then Sharon. Then he made his way over to Clay and was practically sitting in his lap. Everyone was cracking up.

I don't even know where to start with the recap.

Please let there be clack. Clay looked
tall and thin and was in fine voice. Lord ofmanor hair but styled, silver jacket, thin tie, black pants, black sliponshoes, striped socks.

My favorite song was the song from grease - he knocked it out of the ballpark - think sexy 50s idol - omg

Quiana was brilliant. I'm a big Terrence Mann fan and he's still got the chops!

More as I re cover

Irishbookgal was talking a mile a minute so I got a couple of things mixed up - but you get the idea - Clay showed up at the after party! Eeeeeeeeee!

From Imsnoqueen at CV:

They had a small program, which was free.

The only full standing O was for Quiana's final song, then for all 5 singers, at the end of the show.

The house orchestra played, so no PBS orchestra members. There was a sax solo, during Clay's What Kind of Fool Am I.

Fewer people there than there were at the PBS taping.

Clay was in fine voice tonight. Beautiful harmony, whenever he sang with others.

From Imsnoqueen:

When Clay was singing the song from Grease, Terrence Mann started clapping, almost leading the audience, and the audience joined in. I think this really got Clay going. The song was awesome. I can't believe that I've never heard it before. I hope someone got it on video. I'd love to hear it again.

Before Quiana sang the song from Dreamgirls, she took off her shoes. After the song, when she got her standing O, Clay took off his shoes, then everyone else did, and they were there in a pile. Terrence took off his jacket, and threw it on the heap. It was really cute.

from claysgalsal at CV:

DANG!! Why am I at home??!!
I did want to add a few more comments about tonight. The stage set up was beautiful with a 26 member orchestra. that was fantastic. The director has done many shows with NC Theatre. Lighting was similar to PBS---but a lot less of it. There were long white curtains draped nicely above and down the sides of the stage. Five comfortable red velvet looking chairs were set up across the stage in front of the orchestra---with spacing and small tables set up with water and a glass for each performer. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, and the performers interacted with each other throughout the show. Seated from left to right were Sharon Lawrence, Clay, Lauren, Terrance Mann, and Quiana. The stage had that misty look to it in the beginning like the PBS special had.
Clay came out first and stood in the shadows in a profile shot. I was not sure it was him for a few seconds, and then a little more light begin to shine on him. The hair was beautiful. Still long and light brown, brushed back a bit on the sides and parted. At one point in the show, he leaned over to get something on the stage floor, and his hair came forward over his face more. Loved it like that. He evidently tied his own tie, and was not pleased with the way it turned out. At one point when he got up to sing he said that he was sure we had noticed that one part of the tie hung much shorter than the other. He kept trying to straighten it. He was so funny. He would unbutton his coat when he returned to his chair and button it when he stood up. His clothes were beautiful. At the end when Quiana sang "And I am telling you I'm not going" from Dreamgirls, she got a big standing ovation. She had taken off her heels at the beginning of the song to be able to really get into the words and emotions of the song. She was fabulous. Everyone threw their shoes around Quiana's shoes to show their amazing reaction to her song. Clay stood there in his adorable socks that had a light brown stripe on them. Clay had the first standing ovation with "Those Magic Changes" from Grease. I LOVED THAT SONG. Clay was moving and twisting his body from the waist down. We were all dying. It was like a shot of "It's about damn time!" to finally see him sing and move like that again.

Im back from a most FANTASTIC evening! This show was much more than I could have asked for. The last song Clay did "Those Magic Changes" was awesome! Afterwards Quiana said "that was sexy". Terence Mann sang "Where's the Girl" and sang to Lauren and Quiana and Sharon, then sat on Clay's lap. Clay was play acting swooning. After Quiana sang, Clay threw his shoes at her and the rest of the cast did the same. Striped socks, as usual.

I went to the reception after the show and got signatures on my playbill from Terrence, Lauren and Sharon. Then I went in the hall to call a couple friends who had gone back to their rooms so they could come down. When I got back Clay and Quiana were in the room too! I was able to get their signatures in the playbill too and told Clay the show was amazing and he thanked me. He looked lovely, white shirt, nice hair. Terrence, Lauren and Sharon were all very nice and friendly. I was lucky that my timing was just right because Clay was only there for maybe 5 minutesish. he seemed in a good mood and let people take pics but did not pose.

The show was awesome! The after reception was a nice little extra, cherry on top!

What a fabulous, fabulous show! Clay and Quiana were both in great voice, and I swooned a bit over Terrence Mann's voice as well. But it's funny how it's just different when Clay sings. It's like home to me. Weird, huh.

Speaking of Home...sorry for the goof in the cellcert. I'm not sure what happened, but it disconnected, and even though the phone was sitting on my knee, I didn't feel it vibrate. Probably because Clay was singing. Fabulous. Hair was casual, I think he was wearing the jacket from the PBS show, and black pants. At one point later he mentioned that his tie was poorly tied, the ends were uneven, so he apologized but said he was tired of buttoning his jacket. Honestly, it looked better unbuttoned.

I know there were times you couldn't hear the singing for the audience laughter - Lauren came out with her "Raleigh's Own" sash, boa, and tiara and went into the audience singing Popular, picking out people, and put the boa and tiara on a man a row in front of us. Her voice is fine, but I really enjoyed her acting.

Terrence Mann - I see why he's so famous. Stage presence, he haz it. Stars was...fabulous. Sharon Lawrence was fine. She's more of an actor than a singer, I'd say, but she was enjoyable.

My one disappointment tonight was Don't Rain On My Parade. Barbra's version was on continuous replay in my house way back, but Quiana must not have been familiar with the song. She really could have (should have) killed it.

In Whatever Time We Have was a highlight. Clay and Lauren really brought the best out in each other. That falsetto of Clay's - don't hear that very often.

I hope there's clack of "Where's the Girl." Terrence prowled the stage, making all the girls swoon. He sat on Clay's lap and Clay fanned himself. Then he flirted outrageously with the conductor - it was very funny.

Clay's song from Grease, which I didn't recognize at all, was great. Everyone was clapping along...then Quiana brought the house down (and got all the shoes, too!) It's just that type of song. Not my favorite, but she sings it well.

I am home and Barbara is on her way back to Wilson.

THE SHOW WAS WONDERFUL.I wish you all could have been there. It was very informal, and there were 5 chairs with tables in between them..Very relaxing atmosphere.

Thank goodness for my binoculars..Clay is one good looking man, and his eyes just twinkle in the spotlights WOW!  Gwenn there was definetly stubble and his hair looked nice , but one ear was sticking out a little, but WOW!

We saw Sunny & Michelle before the show started, and Sunny did indeed have on a top

Clay had on The View jacket, dark pants,a grey tie with a darker colored stripe. He kept fiddleing with his jacket button, and one time when he got up to sing..He unbuttoned it and said I'm aware that my tie is longer on one side...He's just so cute.

His voice was wonderful...Quiana got a standing O after singing I'm Not Going.

What I especially loved watching with the binoculars was How proud Clay was of Quiana and it really shows  by just watching how he looks at her,and a lot of times he would just close his eyes as if he were soaking it all in..I LOVE THIS MAN!
Its late and I'm going to bed but I wish you could have all been there tonight ..It was very special, not only to the performers but to those who were fortunate to see & hear them

WOW!!! I spoke to Karan after the concert and I told her that I have seen Clay sing more times live than I can even count. And this was honestly THE best I have ever heard him. You guys, he was in rare, rare form. Not even a hint of a missed note, an off key note, he hit every single solo and duet out of the park.

This Is The Moment, what can I say? He killed it. I was really excited to see him do it. He did mention the singing competion (Pieces of Gold) and that he stood right on that spot...and then blew the roof off the joint! And I can't even describe to you what he did with Those Magic Changes. I heard him do things with his voice that I have never heard before. I told Karan that I literally jumped out of my seat. I did do that for "Build Me Up Buttercup" in March but that was excitement over the song. This was pure excitement due to the crazy vocal things he was doing. And the funny thing is that was the song I was LEAST looking forward to. I am so glad there is video because everyone needs to see it. I honestly think that this is the best he has ever sounded.

And I just have to stop talking about Clay for one moment to say, Terrance Mann. My God but he's good! I had forgetten how freakin' good he is. I can't totally explain but when he started singing Stars from Le Miz, I started to cry. And I cried through the rest of the song. I think it's mainly because that show came out when I was in college and was so loved by me and my friends. It reminded me of a certain time in my life. And that melody is so beautiful. And Terrance just has such a distinctive and rich sounding voice. He stands at that mic and commands the stage. Just wonderful.

Random Funny moments...Terrance did a song called Where's The Girl. He ran up to each person and did a bit of business. When he got to Clay he kind of sat on his lap and Clay put his head on his shoulder. Very cute! Then Terrance got in front of the conductor and while he's singing he was rubbing his hand up and down his leg! And the conductor did not miss a beat!

When Lauren Kennedy did her duet with Clay she stopped and said she was going to get all geeky for a moment and then screamed, "I'm singing with Clay Aiken!" She gave him a big hug when they finished and when they left after their final bow she gave him another big hug and they twirled around.

When Clay stood up to do a solo he unbuttoned his jacket and said he knew that one side of his tie was shorter than the other but he needed to unbutton his jacked and wanted us all to know that he knew it was like that. :-)

When Quiana was getting ready to sing (And I Am Telling You) I'm Not Going she said she needed to take off her shoes to sing it...and she did. When she finished (and she tore it up!) everyone took off their shoes in honor of her performance and threw them on the stage. It was funny to watch Clay scramble to find his shoes!

it was fun to hear the stories. Terrance Mann talked about when he directed 1776 and Clay played the courier. He had one line but a solo song as well called Mama Look Sharp. He basically said that he could hardly get Clay to speak the line and that he was kind of wooden and soft spoken, but that when he came down to sing it was like the voice of God. The story was much more involved (and funnier) than the way I'm telling it but you get the idea.

It was really a great night. Everyone did a great job. Lots of talent on that stage. And Clay just really blew me away tonight. I'm especially glad I got to see him sing This Is The Moment. That must have been quite a thrill for him after all these years and all the ups and downs in his life, to come back home to that same stage and give the performance that he did. What a triumph. :heart

As for the show . . .
It was AWESOME!

Clay looked great. The comradery amongst those onstage was wonderful.
QUIANA KILLED!
Damn that girl can SANG!

Seeing Terrance Mann sit in Clay's lap and Clay feign going Gah Gah over him was worth the price of admission!
Clay singing HOME was amazing!

Quiana looked great. Talked to her briefly after the show. Says she IS going out "with the guys" this summer. See you in July, Q!

Sharon Lawrence is beautiful, sweet, friendly and ITTY BITTY!

DH shook Clay's hand! (I was no where near him at the time!!)

I am so glad we came tonight. DH and I met doing The Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1977. I realized tonight just how much I miss live theater! What fun!

I know you know this already, but Clay was in a silver gray jacket with black pocket detailing, black (prolly OMG show suit) pants, white shirt, black/gray tie. Gray/black/white striped socks!

I nearly fainted when I he walked into the after party!
White linen shirt, rolled up sleeves, shorts, sandals (I think).

Has there ever been a more disjointed post??!!

I also want to add that I watched Clay a lot while Quiana was singing...he is so proud of that girl...he was smiling ear to ear as she reached for the high notes, nodding his head in recognition of her talent. The song from Grease..I didn't recognize, but rocker Clay really got into it...that is the one song I want to watch over and over again. I liked the casual atmosphere of the sitting in chairs and telling stories of how they came to be there and associated with the theatre and with each other.

Not a lot to add to the reports from others.
But one thing was clear: the stage was filled with incredible talent--amazing actors, singers, performers--who blew us away. And Clay deserved his spot among the more seasoned, and outrageously talented, performers. He was one of them--talented, charismatic, comfortable in the spotlight, and with a voice that clearly touched and impressed these performers who have seen and heard the best. When he was singing Mack the Knife, Sharon Lawrence was smiling and shaking her head in clear admiration and respect.

Deep voice Clay was up there all night. Rich, full voice, then surprising the audience when he'd bounce to a high note.

I really laughed at Terrence Mann's stories of Clay. He imitated how Clay stood humbly, with his head bowed, when he met him years ago. He described him as "a stick", standing in the corner, waiting to be called up to the stage. But when he sang, he said it was like the voice of God.

Quiana totally knocked it out of the park. That woman is TALENTED!

Terrence Mann was sooo impressive--wonderful full, deep voice. Funny too.

Lauren Kennedy had a gorgeous voice and was made for the stage. She was an absolute riot. These folks must have had an absolute ball together!

I'm so thrilled with the quality and consistency of Clay's voice. This summer is gonna be heaven!

I periodically watched the performers watch each other perform. They enjoyed each other as much as we enjoyed them. I mean, I saw pride from all of them for each singer they were sharing the stage with.
Plus, watching Clay watch Quiana, it wasn't just pride in her HUGE talent and her FABULOUS voice. It was pure love showing in his face as he watched and listened to her do each song.

Not only does Quiana have a great voice, she has quite a range and plenty of nuance in her delivery.

Claymaniac in PA:

At the end, Lauren? said, this is the past, present, and future of the NC Theatre company. Quiana was clearly "the future" in that equation, and she got a lot of well-deserved props from everyone. They all clearly had a lot of respect for each other, and one reason for that is that Clay and Lauren admired Sharon and Terry when they were NC "stars" and then Clay admired Lauren when she was at Broughton and their show choir won nationals and she was doing local theatre. They went from admiring them when they were children to working with them as adults. The interweaving of their lives and careers in the stories they told was fascinating to me. And as someone who came from the same place, I watched it happen for Terry and for Sharon--Lauren was after my time.

and

Was Clay using his falsetto during In Whatever Time We Have. The two of them sounded gorgeous during that song.

Yes, and OMG yes!

and

Has no one said that Lauren came out for her first number wearing a tiara, a boa, and a sash that said "Raleigh's own." Cracked me up. I had just been saying to people, you never hear anyone say "Raleigh's own Sharon Lawrence" or "Raleigh's own Lauren Kennedy." She must've noticed that at those interviews they were doing together that the news people always introduce him as "Raleigh's own." She and he seem to be especially good friends. I thought she was very funny, vivacious and talented.

and

I'll have to think about how to describe this beyond the nostalgia kick this was for me, (Hee, I just remembered a post I wrote in 2005.) because it really was so much more,

and Clay was "the star," IMO, and not just because most of the people there were there for him. Well Quiana out sang them all but Clay sang and was also more nuanced and just in amazing voice.

In his story about directing Clay in 1776, Terry said that voice (Clay's) was "the voice of God or something kindred to it"--I think those were his words, need to check the clack, cause I wanna know the exact words.

The sound system was not as good as the one they used for PBS. I've never heard a sound system as good as that one was.

Clay sang so many songs I hadn't heard him sang before. I want to watch them again over and over. If we didn't have clack I'm not sure I could stand it.

I haven't stopped grinning yet.

I also asked about the orchestra.
They are not a "unit".
They are individual musicians who are "pulled" for performances for the NCT's various shows. I had friends in Greensboro who "hired out" for theater musicals. It all depends on their schedules, etc, which shows they do.

Some of the are from NC Symphony but not all.
