Clay Aiken brings his Christmas show to Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.— It was a lovingly maternal push that helped a young Clay Aiken realize that maybe he should share his voice with others.

He’ll be doing just that Saturday night when he makes a stop at the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania as part of his “Joyful Noise” tour.

As a child, Aiken said he was always singing.

“My mom said I was singing before I was even talking,” he said during a telephone interview from New York City.

But by the time he was in middle school, he didn’t want to participate in choir.

“I didn’t want to sing,” he said. “I really liked singing, but I wanted to do something else in sixth and seventh grade. I wanted to be on the yearbook staff and that was an elective. I didn’t want to waste my elective on choir.”

However, his mother, Faye Parker, knew that her child could sing and needed the right outlet.

“My mom called the choir teacher and said ‘Listen, he won’t do choir and he needs to do it,’” Aiken, 34, said.

So his mother and teacher arranged for Aiken to come in during the mornings before school.

“And from there, I never really stopped singing,” he said.

Was he meant to be a singer even then? Aiken said he’s not sure.

“I don’t know if I was any good back then or not,” he said. “I’ve heard recordings of me as a kid and I think, ‘Oh my god, I’m awful.’ But I still think that sometimes now.”

Those who watched the second season of “American Idol” in 2003 found out during auditions that Aiken, a teacher at the time, clearly had the makings to be a star. Especially when his audition consisted of a that-voice-came-out-of-that-guy of reaction from the judges about Aiken.

Although he came in second to Ruben Studdard, “Idol” launched Aikens’ career, taking him around the world and even to a stop on the Great White Way.

“People kept clapping and I kept working,” he said.

Aiken promises with the “Joyful Noise” tour that “It’s all holiday, all the time,” Aiken said with a laugh.

This is the fifth time Aiken has taken his holiday music on the road, each time, he said, with a different twist. This year, it’ll just be him and an orchestra on stage.

“There’s something about a French horn that makes it seem like Christmas to me,” he said.

For Aiken, the holiday season doesn’t seem to start until he does the Joyful Noise tour.

“For me, this starts the holiday season off,” he said. “... Even if I decorate the house and deck the halls full out, I still don’t feel like it’s the holiday unless I’m doing the show.”

Our siclayfan was called out tonight too. He said this concert was very unique - not just because his mother was there. (Faye did not read her story live, but Clay spoke to her several times as she was sitting in the audience). He wanted to know if anyone knew what made this concert unique. Someone must have shouted that he didn't make any mistakes (lyrics) yet. He asked her to stand and tell her name and it was our Wilma! I'll let her tell you the details

Funny thing - we heard that the ushers held a meeting to discuss the artist's no-clack policy. We got scared. Nobody took pictures (at least, no one openly took pictures). Scarlett, of course, was on the job. Front row, right side. Then Clay came out after the first wardrobe change and snarked on this being the first time in 10 years we obeyed the rules. He said "just watch the flashes." Then it was a clack free-for-all. (And unfortunately plenty of flashes.)

I also meant to mention that a lady two seats down from me, who had not been to a Clay Aiken Christmas concert, used quite a few tissues after the first story, and again after "Mary Did You Know?" was done

I thought Clay sounded a bit hoarse or something tonight when singing at first. He made some reference to having a piece of coal in his throat- even though Ship isn't a coal area. LOL. After his first break/change of clothes, he said he had coughed up a piece of coal, and then he did sound better. Now I am not used to sitting so close, so I could be wrong about the sound, but that's how it seemed to me.

He killed it on "Don't Save It All for Christmas Day"and got a SO.

Clay ragged on one gentleman for letting his wife's friend sit between them. Right before "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" he said everyone - except him - should tell the person next to them they love them.

Claytheena, you're right about the lump of coal. He asked whether Shippensburg was a coal region. When someone said No rather forcefully, he played like he was taken aback, like whoa, he struck a nerve here.

Do you really think I can remember what happened?? I should get DD to write about it, she remembers better. I was back in the 11th row on the side and Clay was saying how something unusual happened tonight and I think he asked if anyone knew what it was. Noone in the front was responding so I yelled out something like "you didn't mess anything up" (meaning the lyrics). I really didn't think he'd hear me that far back but as he said later the theater had great acoustics. He kind of zeroed in to where the voice was coming from and said "say it again!!" He started walking way over to the left of the stage and came forward on an extension that was there on the side. At that point I think I started shaking. Either he or my DD told me to wave and then stand up. I think that's when he asked my name and where I was from. I said Wilma and I was from Maryland but originally from New York (because I always say that ) He then said something about not wanting a resume---the brat!!  He asked me to explain what I meant and I told him that he sometimes changes the lyrcs to hs songs. I know he mentoned my name again once he got back to the center of the stage but don't remember why. My DD was convinced I would have been called upon to go up on stage to sing if it weren't for Sarah--all I can say is thank God for that girl. This was the only concert for DD and she got a kick out of the exchange. On the way home she said "After ten years and all the money you've spent on him, it's about time he spoke to you!!"

Just wanted to add that there seemed to be mostly locals at the show and I think this was one of the most enthusiastic audiences I've heard. The applause was loud and prolonged.

Sorry for being such a posthog tonight, but I gathered the cellcert didn't work so well, so I'm trying to share some of my experiences as I think of them.

A lot of you know about my unfortunate Ebay auction fiasco. I told you what the director at Ship offered to do, and what we accepted. What I didn't tell you, because I wanted to see if it actually happened, was that DH and I were offered a 2nd M&G with the Ship VIPs. I asked if I could bring our DS#1 (the one who has autism) along to meet Clay. The director told me that as long as he had a ticket for the show, he could come too! This little opportunity was what made the seat problem worthwhile to me, as DS loves Clay and that he helps disabled people like him, but he had never met Clay. Now understand, at the 2nd M&G there was a room full of people! We all were to tell Clay our names and get our photos taken with Clay in about a 10 minute period before the show started! Luckily, we were about the last ones to get ours taken, so DS had a quick chance to thank Clay for helping disabled people, and he told him he has autism. Clay was so sweet, and took an extra minute with Tommy. He told DS he is a "friendly guy." I loved it because the schedule was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tight, but Clay still made our son feel very special!  (Something that RARELY happens.)

The other thing that happened, that I totally did not expect, was that immediately after the show, Faye and another lady from the Foundation swooped upon us and thanked us for our donation. They also apologized for the seating snafu (I was AMAZED they knew about it!), and Faye said someone had sent her an e-mail about it. DS also then got to meet Faye - although he had met her once before.

NJU: We gave 2 of our original tickets to DH's sister and her DH after we won the auction seats, and they sat with DS. They had only ever really seen Clay once in Spamalot (with us, of course!). They loved the show tonight, and thought Clay was fabulous. Thought he was a great singer and very funny. They hugged us and thanked us several times, and I think they really meant it. My BIL even mentioned Clay's sparkly eyes.

Did you like the seats that you ended up with? Were they good seats?

Sitting in the front was WONDERFUL!  The seats themselves had arms and were probably as comfortable as any others. A few times I thought how great it would be to sit dead center, but Clay made eye-contact with me several times. I did not at all feel as though I was "on display," which was one of my original fears. If I was, I couldn't tell it.  I felt as if we received very special treatment tonight from both Clay's team and the venue, so I was happy. Thanks for asking, Desertrose.

While waiting for M&G #2, I heard some of the insiders say that the Doobie Brothers and the Vienna Boys choir shows had sold out very quickly, but that Clay's show was an add-on. I don't know how many walk-up seats they sold tonight, but I do know the venue had sold about 2/3 prior. The problem is this is not an inexpensive show for college kids who don't usually have much money. I heard a couple students saying they wished they were going. One of the older workers at the student union building said she wished she could have gone, but always has to work.

One other thing - I think having another very popular Christmas show on Wednesday night, which had been announced in the original line-up, did not help Clay's sales here.

Should be --- I know canfly was filming from center 3rd row and Scarlett from right side 1st row. I got some from just right of center 2nd row (a few songs). We three started early and Clay pointed at us and was wondering why there were so few of us with cameras...I put mine down when he started calling attention to it and he said don't hide it or something like that. He said "what, is there some no camera rule?" and the crowd said YES, but he went on to say we never follow the rules before, he said he didn't mind if we took pictures of him and then lots of cameras came out. I had been shooting pics and putting it down after shooting often to hopefully avoid being seen by ushers but then after that openly followed him shooting pics and taking some vid.

His hair looked fine tonight (whew! I was worried considering the last few nights) although he had a little trouble keeping side from falling into his face -- but this gave us lots of hair tosses though! He ran his hand through his hair every so often. Very nice.

a NJU story - on leaving I asked an older couple how they liked the show = they said it was one of the best shows they've had there, they enjoyed it very much. I take it they go to Luhrs for concerts rather than follow Clay. They had big smiles and very much enjoyed the show.

Enjoyed Shippensburg so much, and met many here. I know regular posters will write or have written full recaps, but I am not so sure any of them were aware that Clay and group stayed at our hotel.
An employee told me this at breakfast, and she was disappointed not to have seen him. No wonder we were all on the 4th floor!!! He took no chances of our running into him in the halls!!!

I thought I'd offer a little backstory of how Sara was called on to sing Silver Bells with Clay.

He told the audience his mom was there, and he asked her what she did the day before. Faye said she'd been to Lancaster. Clay had to do his schtick about pronouncing it the way locals do, which is Lank-aster. He asked Faye what she had done there; she said she went to Sight & Sound. There was some reaction to that from the audience.

Faye is still talking to Clay and says how wonderful this singer, Sara, was. I didn't catch her last name but it sounded something like "Pip." Clay then repeated Sara's name, and there was a loun scream from way up in the mezanine. Clay looked up and asked if she was Sara, and she replied she was her sister, who was there with Sara's husband. Turns out Sara had a seat much closer to the stage and of course Clay found her and brought her up for the SING the Christmas carol. She won the Macy's certificate and went back to her seat. (Sara sings at Sight & Sound, which is a Christian theatre in Lancaster County. Clay's grandmother had visited there many years ago with a bus trip.)

Then Faye says Clay should sing with Sara. So off he goes back to the left side and calls up back up on stage. He asks her what she sings on stage, she said Oh Holy Night, but knthat she knew all the Christmas songs. He asks her about Silver Bells, then asks Ben if her had an arrangement, that's what they decided on.

Wow! Shippensburg was so wonderful last night. Clay sounded great and was as funny and gorgeous as always. He looked better than ever. His hair was brushed back, but after singing a couple of songs it started falling and he kept brushing his hands through it. Every time he went to change during the stories, he brushed it back again.
Went with DH and he loved the show. Said it was really good and Clay was very funny.
Two NJU were sitting right next to me. After the show they said they thought he was really great. Said they liked it a lot. She asked if I had been before.  She said she'd loved to see him again and was going to go get his Christmas CD.

ooh I see cameocat and hosaa got some good shots with the Christmas trees behind Clay. They were very pretty and changed color throughout the show. I think we will get a great crop of Shippensburg pictures!

They certainly had the Christmas spirit in Shippensburg. Christmas trees, lights, and "presents" (they were speakers wrapped) on the stage. Even driving home, there were Christmas lights all the way down King St. Very festive. Nice venue! Great accoustics. Did anyone tell that Clay stopped and talked about the acoustics? He said it reminded him of the garage he and one of the other contestants practiced in during AI Hollywood week. He took the mic down and sang out into the room and you could hear very well. Wonderful acoustics.

He also had some jokes about how there were plaques in various locations showing the donors who helped sponsor this or that part of the theatre. Apparently his bathroom had one and he mentioned using the so-n-so memorial toilet a few times. Apparently Ben's bathroom had no such dedication. He told us there were sponsorship opportunities here!

So much fun at Shippensburg last night. Both of my boys went to Ship so I am familiar with the campus and the venue that is only a few years old. I was last there to take my mom to see the Ten Tenors-she and I love the group and saw them whenever possible. I knew that there were no bad seats in the house but that being said, the night before the show I clicked in to see how sales were going and noticed that two seats opened up in center row F. I couldn't help but upgrade. I sat with my concert buddy, vjm, almost directly behind Faye and her friends. I saw the young woman who would later participate in the lyrics challenge come up and hug Faye. Supersleuths vjm and I deduced that Faye knew her through beauty pageant connections (wrong!). She had that look-tall, leggy, impeccably made up. Learning later that she sings at Sight and Sound in Lancaster made perfect sense. My thinking is that Faye met her at the show and invited her to come to the show. I am thinking she picked up the lone ticket in that front left section and her hubby and sister came for good measure but had to get seats available at the last minute. I found her to be delightful with quite a good voice. I actually enjoyed hearing Clay try to harmonize with her-it was an interesting harmony-took SB to a different place and not totally unpleasant-at least to my ears.

Before the show started I spoke to a NJU couple who were big fans of Barry Manilow. They had never seen Clay in concert and wondered how he might compare to Manilow. The male of the couple said he thought Clay had a wonderful voice. My friend who was sitting next to them, reported to me that the man turned to his wife after All is Well and said "Wow!" He took his wife's hand when Clay told the crowd to turn to the one they were with in his prelude to "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve". My friend said that the couple really enjoyed the concert.quit

I thought that Clay was not reaching the notes quite as effortlessly as I had experienced in Atlantic City. After Christmas Waltz, Clay turned to Ben and said he wasn't sure what was going on with his voice and then to the audience said his voice was going through changes something he had been waiting for- reminded me a little of the unforgettable Mann schtick during the SRHP tour. He made a joke of it-and then after the first story when he came back, he said he thiink he coughed up a lump of coal. For the rest of the show, Clay seemed more vocally comfortable-perhaps not as stellar as some shows but just wonderful nonetheless.

There are many wonderful moments in the show but perhaps the most sublime to me is the religious medley in the beginning of the show. It is gospel infused and I love what he does with his voice-somewhat like what Good News-that kind of power. His introduction is hysterical and reminds me of Brother Maynard from Spamalot- something like "Now open the hymnal to pages xxx and we will sing..."

He would often depart from the reverent mood at the beginning of the religious songs because he could not help interject the funny. But he would then in go through a centering activity to get back to the appropriate mood. Standing straight and in an exaggerated motion, sweep his hand (palm facing his body) from his head down. Very funny.

Clay was so quick throughout. And really is wonderful at physical comedy. His mime portrayal of the women in the first row at Atlantic who were trying tell him that his fly was not quite secured was one of the funniest things I have ever seen Clay do. And he has done alot of funny things. At Shippensburg when he asked the audience what is special to them about the holidays, some one called out "You Clay" and he did this aw schucks look and tnen a quick head flip kicking his one leg back-hard to describe but must be seen.

As I watched Clay be the total performer I thought - are his comedic elements as much a part of his perforances as his vocal prowess? I think the latter is what first draws people and for the nju, the former will keep them coming back. He really is very, very good at both and I have never heard him better than on this tour.

Back from another whirlwind round trip (1600 kms in two days this time) and oh my, it was worth every kilometer a million times over. The man is simply amazing in every way. Funny, witty, gorgeous (inside and out, head to toe) and you know what? The man can frell SING. Guh. Honestly, if you're not just blown away by the sheer vocal prowess this man possesses, you're just not paying attention.

I haven't read a word so I'm sure this was already talked about, but after the first couple songs were over and he realized there were only two cameras visible to him, he gave a little wtf? spiel and then stage-whispered his permission to snap away. All you could hear was the sound of camera bags being ripped open. LOL!!!! The usher who sat us made a point of telling every single person she brought in, in no uncertain terms, that there was no photography or recording of any kind allowed, per CONTRACT of the performer. I so wanted to ask her afterward how that worked out for her. Heheheh. Anyway... I took a ton of pics but only a few are worthy of posting. Most are his typical gorgeous, intense singing face, but my favorites are the funny faces he makes. So expressive!

Wanted to add a couple of comments about the Shippensburg show. First, I was so happy when my friend siclayfan got a call out from Clay. The whole thing was really cute.

I haven't seen any mention of Clay laughing at the one guy when he was doing his man schtick. One of the men in the front row said he was there with his wife and her girlfriend, and the girlfriend was sitting between them, which led to some funny Clay comments. Then when Clay was singing What Are You Doing New Year's Eve and was in front of this group, the guy reached his arm across the back of the girlfriend and that cracked Clay up. I think the friend was embarrassed but the wife thought it was hysterical.

Also when we were leaving, one of the women ushers just started talking to me and my friend about how great Clay was. I think she started off by saying Wow, and then went on to say how personable and funny he was on top of singing so well. She really seemed impressed.

I also noticed that Clay seemed to have some trouble in the beginning, and he looked like he was kind of swallowing hard or something. Once he came back out and made the comments about coughing up a piece of coal, he seemed to do better. And about the cameras, this was the most direct I've ever heard him be about allowing cameras. He came right out and said it was fine. It was funny that a whole bunch of people reached in to bags for their cameras after that, just wish all of them had listened about the no flash.

I think canfly has the whole show and she had a great seat. Not sure how long it will take for her to get it up because she has really slow internet. There should also be audio if I did it right. She gave me her recorder to use so hopefully that came out ok too.

Even though I live only about 30 minutes from Shippensburg, I've never been there but I was really impressed with the campus and with the Luhr Center. It was a really nice venue and they really did a good job of making it look all festive for Christmas.

Home from the Boston Clay Aiken show and I can literally say it was the best show EVER! Clay sang beautifully! He was so on. Our tickets said Row 4, but the venue was set up as little tables so we were like front row center and I mean RIGHT in front of the stage! The mic stand was right in front of me. We could have reached out and touched Clay's shoes! THAT CLOSE! It was amazing and I am SO grateful to Kimberley Dorman and Suzanne Gustafson for taking me with them, and for Christina Dorman for letting me go in her place! It was to date the best night of my life! ?

Shippensburg recap

I hadn't watched a whole lot of clack, but I knew the set list and had listened to a few cellcerts. Still, the opening to "All Is Well" with the tape player was hilarious. The faces he makes! cindilu2 was concerned at first, thinking something really was wrong, until she realized it was just schtick, and he had us all laughing. And then he started singing and we were all blown away. There were a few rough patches, enough to make us grab on to each other and cross our fingers, but of course he nailed it and almost blew the roof off with the final note.

The overwhelming feeling I got during the show was that he was loving it, he was enjoying himself up there, and he was selling himself to a lot of people who he knew had never seen him before. It was much less of a show "for us" than the Tried & True tour was. This was a show designed to wow, and it certainly did. I think he really, really wants to keep doing this, and I am sure he will. I am not worried anymore that this might be the last tour. This man was born to be on stage. He glows, and he is so funny and comfortable in his own skin now. God, I was blown away by the power of his voice and the control he has over it. In one song, he can go soft and delicate, and then the next line practically take the roof off. At one point he raved about the acoustics in the venue, and dropped the mike and sang a line or two of MCWL just to demonstrate how his voice could carry right to the back. Which it did. I'd love to hear him sing a whole song that way.

A couple of times I had to force myself to keep my eyes open. No, not because I was bored. OMG, who could be bored with that man on stage and those gorgeous sounds coming out of his mouth? I am just such an audiofile, and his voice is just such a perfect instrument, I sometimes want to close my eyes to focus even more on it. But of course, that would be sacriledge! I can't even describe how great of a concert it was. Every time you think there is no way he could possibly raise the bar higher, and every time he manages to do it. Had I not known I had tickets to two more shows, I would have been devastated when he started into "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" because it was almost over. But thankfully, I do have tickets, and come ice storm or blizzard, I'll get to both of them.

It was kind of ironic that it became a bit of the Faye show, given that certain members of our group aren't her biggest fans. Hee. But it was also kind of cool that it took the banter in different directions, and gave us a gorgeous example of how well Clay can harmonize. The girl Faye had picked to go up on stage and sing Silver Bells was very, very good, but Clay just amazes me with his ability to figure a harmony out so quickly. He sang the first line of the melody to get her started, then went down to harmonize with her, then decided to go up and sing the high part instead. It was so cool! And the freaking toilet banter was hilarious. He was so tickled with that, I just love to see him so happy up there. I had perma grin all night and still do even this morning, although I've had little sleep and my stomach is tied in knots because of not eating properly on the road. Oh well, the things we do for Clay Aiken, eh?

I loved the overall package. Heh, the show people, the show! The stories lead perfectly into the songs. I had a bit of a hard time understanding Faye's story, but it was the quality of the recording more than her accent. I heard later that it might have been recorded over the phone, and that explains it. But his banter about the pig tail later was hilarious! Because they were my thoughts exactly. Who the hell wraps up a pig tail? LOL! I look forward to downloading the clack and reliving every minute of this show. His voice was fantastic. A few cracks but he reigned them in every time. And I really hope someone was kind enough to get a full body shot during "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day". The man sings with his feet too, people! I love the way he gets his whole body into it. That was the best rendition of "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" I've ever heard him sing. And then he came out on our side for the encore, and sat on the edge of the stage right in front of us. I hadn't spoiled myself at all for this song, not even audio, so it was totally new to me. I couldn't tell you the first thing thing about it though, because I think I was in the Aiken fog. He walked up our aisle, but no one touched him. God he just commands the audience these days. He is so in his element.

When we were leaving, even the ushers were commenting to us on how amazing he is. There were some local couples standing outside, and we heard them say "he has a very loyal following". So we chatted with them a little bit, let them know where we were from, etc. And then we all jumped in the car because we were freaking starving, and headed over to a 24 hour diner across the road from our hotel. It quickly got busy with other Clay fans coming in, including fellow Ontarian canfly172, and justclay12, amongst others whose names I don't remember. It was fun to be able to decompress and relive and eeeeee and squeeeeee for a while. Then we fell into bed and got up early to begin the trek home and do it all over again next weekend!

MISSCHRIS AT CV

I wasn't going to do a real recap of Shppensburg but I have been reading others and thought I would offer a few comments since I found myself nodding in agreement with so many others.

It really was evident that it was a crowd of ALOT of guys and "other people." Even from convos behind me I could tell. People wondering what he would sing. This was truly the most guys I ever saw at a show.

The stories fit the show perfectly. It likely gets lost on a cellcert. I don't listen to them because I think it really does not represent a show at all. Its a nice variety in the show of songs and comedy. Clay was really funny.

Voice trouble. Again, I doubt you can really hear that on a cellcert. You can hear it live. He had trouble and did talk about it. Voice changing. Swallowed coal. He was reaching for alot of notes. Often that comes off as yelling. But, I have to say that alot of it was really great. I love the medlies. The soft, effortless singing. First Noel finale with the horns was just awesome. He commented on the venue acoustics. He put down the mike at one point. He probably didn't even need it at all.

There was a mention of Silver Bells harmony. Well I think it was pretty easy for Clay since his recording of it is heard every day on the radio at Christmas these days. The woman that sang with him was really good to sing it off the cuff with him.

The venue. Gorgeous stage decoration. The musicians looked beautiful there with Ben on piano. Loved it. And the people working there were lovely. Friendly and very nice. Easy parking and enter and exit. The orchestra was incredible and Clay said so. Better than many he has heard.

Friends. Well it was great to spend time with jasr and mr jasr and DD. We had dinner at the Shippen Hotel with them and our other gala friends. Very nice.

On another personal note, the JNT was very emotional for me. I realized how much I missed it. I remember the first one when the green sweater spoke to me and Ilovemycat in the first row. (Missed you girl). He was wearing the same pants as that day. The long beige plaid ones. MCWL and Emmanuel made me cry. I loved those days when Clay had a huge ad in the NY Times for Madison Square Garden. Good to know the JNT is back.

I probably forgot something. Will add if I remember. But I think the recaps have been right on the money. A beautiful night in Shippensburg made it feel even more like Christmas.

A little late but here is my Shippensburg recap. First of all want to give a huge THANK YOU to misschris and her lovely DH for hosting us and getting us to and from the concert. I was in AC last week and what a difference in the crowd. They were very appreciative and enthusiastic, which was nice as there were a bunch of first timers. We were alot closer to the stage this time which is always a good thing LOL as I got to see his expressions alot more clearly. He looked fantastic although I do think the shiny suit needs to be retired, makes him look boxy or something. Anyhow the acoustics were so much better than AC and were great for his voice. What I have noticed with this tour is that his hands are interpreting the song as much as his voice. I found his voice to be just as smooth as AC, oerhaps got a little tired towards the end but still superb. For me the highlights are definitely the Away in a Manger medley, his voice and the arrangement are just exquisite. All Year Long is beautiful and I actually could hear it this week. EEE for DD#1 who was in the row in front of us but opposite end of the aisle as he came out that side. She was thrilled. He is so freaking funny and quick when working the audience. I definitely left wanting more, don't we always? One of these years I hope to be able to do a tour from start to finish, definitely on my bucket list. So thankful for the cellcerts and clack to keep it going for me.

VERY NICE REVIEW OF SHIPPENSBURG:

Clay Aiken brings holiday spirit to Shippensburg

Clay Aiken sitting onstage singing the final song.

Clay Aiken’s performance at the Luhrs Center Saturday was a show to remember right from the opening number. As the lights faded out and a spotlight was brought up on the curtains, Aiken walked on stage to the beat of applause and began to sing his opening song, “All is Well;” except that no music came out.

Standing in silence with his hands clasped around the microphone, Aiken looked side to side to see if someone was fixing the issue. After two to three minutes, he finally walked off stage as the audience burst into laughter at the unexpected situation.

Re-emerging with a new microphone, Aiken laughed with the crowd and began again; this time with full sound and a booming voice. The curtains rose, revealing a full orchestra with Christmas trees and presents aligning the stage. It was a genuine scene of Christmas celebration.

When he finished his opening songs, Aiken approached the crowd and delivered jokes about Pennsylvania being the heart of America.

He praised the energy of Northwestern fans, saying that Southern fans were usually quite reserved and respectful, but that he enjoys the crowd being excited. From there he led into his rendition of “O Holy Night” and a medley of other popular songs.

Working his way through his favorite Christmas songs and tracks off of his own album “Merry Christmas, With Love,” Aiken put his unique style to each song and showed off his large vocal range. Aiken explained that he has done multiple Christmas tours over the years and that “it doesn’t feel like Christmas without doing these shows.”

He complimented the Luhrs Center on its beauty and noted that the acoustics of the theatre were doing wonders for his voice.

“I’ve waited 35 years for this. There’s so much bass in my voice,” Aiken joked.

Later in the show, he said that the Luhrs Center reminded him of his time on “American Idol” because the rooms looked similar, and the Luhrs Center had a similar sound to the area that Aiken used to practice in for the show.

He went on to talk about the amount of sponsorship that went into each part of the theater, poking fun at each part having a different “donor.” He thanked the “donor” of the toilet in his dressing room and joked that there were still “sponsorships available.”

The most impromptu part of the show came when Aiken addressed his mother in the audience, who was in Lancaster the day before to see a performance at the Sight and Sound Theater.

Aiken talked to his mom about the show, as if there weren’t 200 strangers surrounding them, and discussed a talented woman Aiken’s mom met at Sight and Sound. Aiken called Sarah Timm to the stage and asked her to play a game. She would pick a song title out of a bowl and try to remember the lyrics.

Timm selected “Up On the Rooftop,” and proceeded to stun the crowd with her vocal ability. After a strong urging from his mother, Aiken asked Timm back to the stage to sing a duet. Flawlessly, the pair joined up and sang “Sleigh Ride” in perfect harmony, causing the audience to erupt in cheers and applause.

After Timm left the stage, Aiken explained that the past two shows he has “lost complete control” of where the show was supposed to go.

“I’ve lost control of the ship, no pun intended,” Aiken quipped.

Getting the show back on schedule, Aiken spent the rest of the show praising his orchestra, chatting with audience members and picking out specific people to talk to. He then turned the crowd’s attention to his drummer, who has a challenging last name: Joe Choroszewski.

Aiken brought a folded sign with the drummer’s last name boldly written across it, and he challenged an audience member to say it correctly. To the amusement of everyone in attendance, she failed and Aiken refused to say it correctly for fear “it would leak to YouTube and his game would be ruined.”

Throughout the show, Aiken made it feel more like a gathering of friends than a performance with strangers. He singled out the male audience members and a few women sitting in the front row; his humor never faltering throughout the show.

In a more personal, intimate ending, Aiken reminisced that 10 years ago this week was his time on “American Idol” and the first time he met his fellow competitor Ruben Studdard, who would go on to win the show that season. Aiken continued to thank his fans for all that they’ve done.

“I thank you for allowing me to do this for the past ten years,” Aiken said to his dedicated fans, known as “Claymates.” He went on to say that he is thankful for the kindness and compassion his fans continually show not only to himself, but to fellow fans and others.

He closed with some inspirational words and encouragement to continually be kind to one another and faded into his last song, “Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day.” It was this perfect ending that earned the singer a standing ovation.

When the applause died down, Aiken returned for the encore just like the show had started: a single spotlight on him in front of closed curtains, and nothing more, as he sat and sang to the audience in Luhrs.

He worked his way up the aisle and finished by exiting out the side door, leaving everyone to feel like the Christmas spirit had arrived.

Clay Aiken has had a busy 10 years with tours, albums, a role on Broadway and his work with the charity UNICEF. Throughout those 10 years, one thing has remained consistent: Aiken remains a talented and kind person who genuinely loves what he does. Saturday night was no exception.
