My review of the Costa Mesa Joyful Noise Tour.

There was a children’s choir, a high school choir, The Joyful Noise Orchestra, S’von, Quiana, Jacob, Angela, and this totally gorgeous gentleman named Clay Aiken.

There were people dressed in furs, diamonds, jeans and tees.  The curtains of the theatre were gossamer thin, with shapes projected on it, snowflakes, Christmas trees, etc.  There were no bad seats, but mine was in Row Q and in the center of the row, so I had a very good view.  The seats were plush, the rows were roomy, the bathrooms were luxurious…. the venue was NICE!

I couldn’t begin to tell you the set list.  He started with the regular Christmas carols we are all used to hearing.  You could tell his voice is not fully recovered, but was fine.  He was absolutely gorgeous.  His hair was good, his eyes were bright, he wore a burgundy sweater with a, what else, striped shirt of burgundy and pink under it, with fitted dress slacks.  Gorgeous, I tell you!  He was obviously feeling much better and was glad to be there.

He said he was under doctor’s orders not to talk, but he did anyway, of course.  What else is new?  But, he didn’t talk much.

Highlights:

He sang the Christmas Waltz and proceeded to dance the waltz with Angela, while Quiana and Jacob danced together, too.  They managed to make it a bit hot, but just a bit.  Of course, it was enough to bring on the screams.

He came out into the audience and sang to, held hands with, pulled up and sway-danced with women/girls in the handicapped section in the front.  How can anyone not love this man?  My throat closed up while witnessing this lovely, giving action.

Quiana sang a rousing version of “My Grown Up Christmas List.”  She had some serious pipes wailing last night.  She had a new hair-do that was very becoming and she looked gorgeous.

There was an intermission.  Maybe 20 minutes.

Clay came out in a FROCK COAT, with a purple tie.  (no striped shirt this time, just plain white).  I almost fainted, as I am a BIG lover of Clay in a frock coat.  I’m not astute enough to know if it was the AMA coat – I don’t think so.  I just LOVED it.  There was gentle mic caressing during this song.  I think this was O Holy Night.  To tell you the truth, the coat affected me so much, I’m not sure what he was singing.

O Holy Night got a standing ovation, but we had to sit down and quit clapping cause, one after another, children came out and read from the Bible, the nativity passages.  I watched Clay’s face while they came out and read.  Teacher Clay was front and center and, as always, the love on his face for children just melts me.  And people wonder why we think he is the sexiest man alive.  The children would read a passage, then Clay would sing an appropriate song to match the passage.  There was no doubt this was a CHRISTmas show.

Angela also sang a solo, with choirs.  She also seriously wailed, but while she has a good voice, IMHO, Quiana’s voice is richer.  Jacob did not sing a solo… wonder why not?

Mary Did You Know was wonderful!  Man, I love that song!

MCWL was not as good as the CD, he couldn’t seem to project like he needed to.  Now understand, Clay on a bad day is ten times better than anyone else on their best day, so the song was totally enjoyable, just not quite as good.  If I hadn’t been listening to the CD non-stop since the 16th, I probably wouldn’t have noticed.

He hit the high note in DSIAFCD, but couldn’t hold it.  He REALLY got into the R&B/Soul feel to it and since he had taken off the frock coat and was singing in tucked-in-shirt into well-fitting pants, we got nice booty sightings, which we hardly ever get.  Almost distracted from the great rendition of the song.  It was his last song.  We stood and clapped and could see the choir still back there, so hoped he would do an encore.  He came out from the side, by himself (with choir behind the curtain) and sang a quiet song, Good News.  It’s not exactly a Christmas song, but certainly could be sung as one.  It was beautiful but almost too quiet to follow a rousing rendition of DSIAFCD.  There were a couple of yellers during this song, but you could hear them being shushed.

It was a show fitting for a symphonic hall, but definitely not what we’re used to with Clay.  Maybe because of his voice, there wasn’t as much personality showing thru.  He talked about everyone trying to get him to take piano lessons as a child, but still not playing the piano, so S’von played and when he hit a trill, Clay made one of his cute faces and we laughed, but there just wasn’t much else.  Of course, he was so gorgeous that just being able to stare at him for almost 2 hours was enough to hold us through without the funny asides we usually get.

My guess would be that as he gets better, throat-wise, and the show gets more comfortable, more of his personality will come out.

It was wonderful to see him again, as I did not get to the NAT.

I'm so excited it was a good show. Was there anything about the toys for tots? I have heard there would be donation bins at the concerts. I didn't want to walk in with toys if there is no place to leave them. I get to see him in San Jose and can't wait.

Yes, there were Marines and bins by the front door.

Purses were not searched.

They asked over and over again not to use flash cameras, but some did anyway.

I saw cell phones on.

I think only the first few rows that Jerome could watch were off limits for videoing.  One person was escorted out.  There were no real security, just ushers.

Fantastic show.... I just bought a ticket for Pasadena... got to see him again.  I am all kinds of shocked that neither of the LA shows were sold out.  I mean, if the LA basin will not sell out two small venues, why should he bring a big arena show out here again.  Scary!

The problem probably was the Thanksgiving weekend.  However, they didn't do that well during the IT tour in California.  Too many shows I think.

Thanks Liney for giving us your review.  I enjoyed it so much.

Well, sorry I didn't post last night, but it looks like lots of other people did! Where to begin?!

Well, when I got there with my dear friend Karyn (she's such a good sport and let's me drag her to all my Clay sightings and events) we discovered that we were pretty high up in the 2nd tier. We sat down, I looked at that stage so far away and then we proceded to get up and find the man with binoculars! (o: So cute, the elderly lady guiding us to our seats was telling me about how she used to ditch school to see Frank Sinatra, just like we were seeing Clay! Yeah, I'd say the 2 are comparable!!!

The concert was incredible! The first song started with the most precious little boy who came out and sang. Dont' remember what he sang, but he was off key and so nervous! He did a great job! The first song included a children's choir and other choirs and the kids were so cute! A few of them were super fidgety and liked to wiggle while singing! It made it all the better! Clay weaved his way in and out of all of them as he sang!! Those lucky kids!! WHy can't I be younger?!

The entire concert was incredible and such a classic holiday concert! It was obvious to me that Clay was sick, but still he went on!  He sang his heart out, despite being sick and probably a little miserable! For the most part, people got the message about it being a classy event...a few didn't however! There was a bunch in front of us with a sign and I though "hello, catch a clue"! Of course there was screaming...I wish they wouldn't have though b/c half the time it was while Clay was trying to hold out a long note and their screaming drowned him out! So sad! Several times throughout the night people felt the compulsion to scream out, "I love you Clay"...very uncalled for!

Quiana, Angela and Jason were there as always and they were incredible! During one song, CLay and Angela danced around the stage together, both with microphones in hand! Quiana sang "Grown Up CHristmas List" and Angela sang, "He is light"(?). They both were right on the money and sounded incredible!!!

At one point, distributed between songs, Clay had several of the elementary kids come out and read various portions of the CHristmas story. He was like a proud Dad! All his attention was on those kids and once they finished their part he would smile from ear to ear and you could tell he was sooo proud of them! Weaving the Christmas story between songs was beautiful and truly reflected the whole reason why Clay does what he does! You could tell it was an important part of the night for him!

I'm not sure exactly what his concert schedule is now, but I hope he gets some rest! You could tell his voice was off (although he still sounded amazing) and some of those notes were a struggle for him. I just prayed throughout the concert that God would touch his voice and strengthen him throughout the show. He seemed a little tired and worn out!

Having binoculars was amazing! At several points when people were screaming, he gave the best look! He kind of rolled his eyes and gave a look that seemed to say "come on, enough already". The binoculars allowed me to catch several "looks" from Clay! They had me laughing so hard!

One of the best parts of the night is when Clay was singing the song about "New Years Eve" and he walked down into the audience and sang to some of the women on the isle. He sang to a girl in a wheelchair and then he lifted her up out of her chair and held her as he danced with her! It was the most precious sight to see! It's reasons like that I love Clay so much! He such a man of integrity and genuine character! Sooooo attractive! I'm a bit jealous of one lady however...she got a kiss on the cheek! Oh to be her!!!

Well, that is my random ramblings about the concert! It was beautiful and Clay did an amazing job, despite being sick! Continue to pray for his healing and strength...he's going to need it!

Until, Dec. 6th and my encounter on Leno...Happy Holidays!

Thanks for telling the part about when he went into the audience, our seats were in tier three and we were all struggling to see, we knew it was great but saw nothing.

Clay looked handsome as ever but it was easy to tell he still has a bit of a cold, didn't matter to me, just to be in his presence is so special. He sounded great and was very giving, he is a sweet man. It is hard for some to control themselves around him, some screaming out I love you Clay, can't say I blame them but it did drown out the sound a little.

The venue? Don't get me started, maybe it was a matter of seating but ours was not that great and it took until the second part of the show for the sound improvement. Anyway, I'm considering keeping my original tickets for El Cajon just to see him again and see how things would have improved. I was so happy to see Quiana,Angela and Jacob there with Clay, they work so well together. There's so much to say but I have to get ready for work. One more thing, we did not go to the bus but from a spot above we watched the scene and I said Hi to Gerome as he was walking Raliegh.

“that lady he danced with” was me !!!!!!!

I almost did not go as I felt terrible and extremely worn out.

When Clay pulled me up to dance and I was buckled into me wheelchair and when I reached put to shake his hand, he tried to pull me up to stand, but I was buckled into my wheelchair as I was telling him "I’m a quad”. (while trying to unbuckle myself).

He stopped singing at this point and said, that’s okay, “I’ve got you” as he lifted me to my feet and held onto me - it was obvious he has worked with disabled people. We danced and he asked me “are you okay” several times while only the orchestra played. I mentioned that my Husband of 25 years was with me and Clay said "so I’m probably in trouble” I told him no !

I could not believe it, people asked if our dancing had been staged. A lady from the Performing Arts Center asked for my name and asked if they could interview me, we'll see if she contacts me.

During the short 5 minute break, during the concert, people from all over the audience came over to find out what Clay had said to me and if it was staged. Several people showed me pictures that they took of us dancing. I told them that I get nervous when people pick me up as I do not walk/ stand up well, but it was obvious Clay knew what he was doing as I felt his ability to hold me up. It was a fun comforable dance, like I was dancing with my brother !

Many fans afterwards told me that my picture will be all over the web tomorrow ! Several people said that they would email me their pictures. I’m looking forward to receiving them. Does anyone remember what song we danced to?

What a night – I am so glad I fought the pain and did push myself to go even though I did not feel good. God is good - I'm going to make it back out of this wheelchair !

I am a Nurse Practitioner, and have been disabled for 9 years but, I continue to help others without healhcare by doing home medical visits and telephone consults. This was such a nice way to celebrate my 25 years with a wonderful Husband and be 'special' even if it was for just 16 bars of music - it felt longer.

Clay, I can't thank you enough, I was all snuggled togethered my Husband, as you sang and you picking me up, not being afraid of my disability was such a boost to our night!

God has blessed you tremdously and I pray that the kids/society will listen to your songs as you sing and see the meaning behind the teriffic man God has chosen you to be !

In His healing hands,
Denise H.
Costa Mesa, CA

P.S. Clay, we missed hearing the trumpet solo during "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - my Husband is a professonal trumpet player, he'd love to talk/email you. We met 28 years when we played in a traveling group, I play the cello - another incredible story for another time !

Thank you for your posts. Unfortunately, Clay will not be coming to St. Louis with this tour so I won't get to see it.  :'(   I will have to be happy with downloads and stories.

Denise, bless you.  Your story is a perfect example of why Clay is so beloved.  Where can I find pictures or video of your special dancing gift?

The thing I love about Clay's concerts is that it is rarely just about him.  He includes everyone on stage in the performance and they end up with their own fans.  He's not a perfect person, but what a wonderful human being Clay is.  His mom raised him right.

Love to all and especially to Clay and his family during this holiday season.

Special thanks to all who share your experiences.  Where is that list of video links???

Thank you Lin, heartaiken and CarissaJoy for sharing your concert experience with us.  You all are very lucky to see the very first show!
It's always the show in which the "glitches" get worked out, and that always makes it interesting.

I'm sure it is a different type of concert, since that's what Clay said he wanted to do this time.  It sounds like he gave his all, as always.

The downloads for this show are at AIRPLAY CENTRAL. The links that include the segment where Clay danced with Angela during Winter Wonderland and Denise during What Are You Doing New Year's Eve are by "tease."

Enjoy!

Carissajoy, the song was what are you doing News Years Eve, what a blessed and lucky lady you are! When we were out side after the concert there was a lady in a wheelchair near the bus was that you?

How wonderful to know that someone from Claymaniacs experienced such a joyful moment with OMC. I'm going to check out the video.

Thank you, Pamela.  I actually had already downloaded Denise's dance with Clay but I didn't realize that's what I was seeing.

Denise, when I saw that the first time, I realized Clay was dancing with someone with a disability, and it warmed my heart.  After reading your story, it now brings a tear to my eyes.
