eeeeeeeeee!  Thanks for that pic Colleen!

Recap from ncgurrl at the Clackhouse.

Quote
Just a few notes from OC before I head for bed. I am easy (according to Spot) so I was happy with the concert as it was given, glitches and all. I was not happy with the audience or at least the ones who were bound and determined to make the show about them. The screechers pretty much ruined the encore. The song was beautiful and Clay's emotional tie to it was obvious. The screaming broke the mood and ruined the performance. If anyone who did that screeching ever apologizes they can forget me ever accepting it. My husband described them as barbarians. He is correct in my opinion.

I now understand the reason for no flash photography. I do not know what part of no flash photography people did not understand, but it was disconcerting to be swept up in the mood of a song and to have lights going off in my face. Most of the audience behaved appropriately, but the few who did not really disturbed others.

Fair warning. Be in your seat before the doors close. You will not get in until a natural break in the show.

Security was all over Linda of ba & la. She was in the first row and at one point stood up to take a photo as Clay walked toward her. Too bad she was not tossed out on her ear. Toward the end of the show Security went don and spoke to her three or four times. I believe she was sitting too far forward in the seat and leaning up on the stage. When Clay came down the steps into the audience he came right by her and totally ignored her as he made a bee line for claysvegasfan.
Skippy, you better post about Clay being two feet from you. Skippy was sitting right behind the woman in the wheel chair and had a great view of Clay. I was four seats further over in the same aisle. It was really neat to see so many of the CH women getting personal attention from Clay. Clay is beautiful when he is communicating with women. He just glowed.

Clay was happy and upbeat during the show and respectful and reverent at times. He glowed when he interacted with the children. He was so proud of the readers he could just bust. Any roughness in his voice did not detract from its overall quality. The cheer in DSIAFC was because Clay could not hold the note as long as he wanted to and reacted. If you ever want to see pissy Clay, just be the one responsible for the speaker feedback during the show. It only lasted a fraction of a second, but the look he shot the sound crew spoke volumes.

OK, that was awesome. I'm back from the show.

I really tried to remember everything, but it ain't gonna happen. My mind's a complete jumble, so I'll just give some general thoughts.

The first half, I was really on the edge of my seat because he sounded so hoarse. However, his hoarse voice sounded beautiful on the soft songs. Every now and then he would shout out a note and then go back to soft (I think he was having trouble with his upper range without going full voice). It was still amazingly beautiful. Because he started the second act with O Holy Night and completely nailed it, I was totally relaxed from then on. And he kept going. DSIAFCD was unbelievable. I have no idea how he got those notes out, but they were perfect.

I agree that the kids were unnecessary and that the high school choir was very good. I also agree that the drummer was horrendous. At one time Clay shot over a confuzzled look because the drummer was on a totally different rhythm than everyone else. I couldn't see who it was, so I don't know if it was Derek. S'von rocked on his piano part during IBHFC. Also, another familiar face was there playing guitar - I think Andy. I do miss Danny though. :-(

I love Quiana, and she did a good job. I never liked Angela's voice, but she was actually very good - it got a little too high for her though. I'm glad Jacob did not get a solo.

During the encore was when the audience went crazy with the "I love you Clay"s which was unfortunate because Clay was really feeling his thong -- uh song. Actually it looked like he had tears in his eyes when he came out for the encore, but I couldn't tell for sure. Also, I think he missed his light for that last song because he was right behind where the light actually hit the stage and he was pretty much in darkness for the song.

.....I'm worried about him continuing to sing. He needs another week to rest. He really surprised me tonight though like he always does. I'm very very proud of him.

Oh yeah, and since I never got a Clay Aiken thong from the NAT, I couldn't pass up the Clay Aiken boxers which have a silhouette of Clay and Christmas-Hat-Raleigh.

Oh, and myaikenfeet was sure to point out that Amber Nix is in the program under Performance Staging and Guest Artist Coordinator.

Recap from artquest at the Clackhouse.

Quote
The concert was a mixed blessing. Apparently it sounded great through the cellcert but not so great to me in the concert hall.

The first half has pacing issues, I thought. In addition, there were a number of missed cues: curtains went up, came down, went up again. The kids were cute but as someone said upthread, added zilch. Clay limited his talking, which reduced the connection to the audience and added to the low energy. Silver Bells was terrific, though, and WAYDNYE had its own very special magic.

The biggest problem seemed to be poor sound balance. Clay's upper register sometimes sounded a little screechy when he belted and the orchestra overshadowed him at times. Miss Artquest says that there are frequently two sound people at a performance: one to sit out front and listen and another backstage to actually fix stuff if it needs it. I wonder if the sound designer was there tonight.

By the time the second half started, a good bit of the sound problems had apparently been solved. Clay added to the solution by leaning away from the microphone whenever he needed to raise the volume. OHN was a thing of beauty although there were still a few remaining issues with balance. DSIAFCD was amazing. Lots of charisma, great voice, great stage presence, great song. THIS was the Clay I love to see in performance. I only wish it had all come together before the end.

The encore was just bizarre. The choir was behind the translucent scrim, Clay was in front. Lights went on, off, colors changed, the spotlight was on him and then off and then on. Sometimes the mike seemed to work and sometimes not.

Anyway, I imagine that there will be discussions long through the night as the group heads towards San Jose

My non-fan friend LOVED the encore. LOVED the song. Wants to know where it came from. Go figure. She also loved OHN and DSIAFCD.

Now, more than ever, I regret that this will be the only concert I see. I can't wait to see what he does next.

ellenpoppy posting here, sitting with California Clayfan, lala52 and Renee4Clay.

Random comments:

When Clay first came out, I thought he looked beautiful but thinner. (Two other CHers agree, contrary CB person thinks he looked the same.) His sweater and pants appeared baggy to us, as if he'd lost five lbs. since first picking them out. The weight loss, however, served to really accentuate his chisled cheekbones, and the lighting made him look truly beautiful. We feel that he didn't look sickly, although he did seem to have extra stage makeup on, probably to give him some color.

Now, the voice: CCF feels that he sounded gravelly in quite a few places, probably because he's still getting over his illness. We thought he sounded great, was careful in reserving his voice a little for future concerts, but was able to hit some high notes that were amazing, considering that he had no voice at all a week ago.

Random musings:

-Clay didn't talk at all until about four songs in. He mentioned that the doctors told him not to talk unnecessarily (but talking to us is necessary!!!), so he said he'd have to sing more instead. (I was glad that he mentioned this, so that reviewers and people who were unaware that he was sick would better understand any voice limitations.)

-lala52 said that on OHN, the audience exhibited "premature adulation" (don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger) in giving Clay a standing O at the expected ending of the song. Obviously, we did not anticipate the proper climax of the song, since Clay had a little more left in him. (Quoting lala52 again...) WHILE WE WERE STANDING AND APPLAUDING, HE SHOOK HIS HEAD SLIGHTLY AND HELD UP HIS HAND AND WAVED AS IF TO TELL US THAT HE HAD MORE TO THE SONG. Then, to our surprise, he added another line with a great glory note!

-Clothing choices: we've already mentioned the baggy first ensemble. Not our favorite look. However, that gorgeous Dickens-style coat more than made up for it. It was tailored, pricey and very classy on him. However, when he took off that coat, and came back out without the coat, wearing just the nicely tailored and well-fitting slacks with (OMG, OMG) the shirt tucked in, he looked YUMMY (lala52 again). Those pants fit beautifully, and we had to remember that it was a spirtual holiday show (even though lala52 did check him out through her binoculars, especially when he was sitting on the stool. She confirms that he did have belt loops but no belt, which is supposed to make us think that she brought binoculars to her 6th row seat to look for belt loops.)

-Souvenir stand: it was an absolute zoo. Not a ball in sight!!! (Yes, lala52 looked through her binoculars again and reports there wasn't a single Christmas ball to be found.) Luckily, she has some balls heading her way, courtesy of the U.S. mail. Merchandise: Clay Christmas wrapping paper (I was SO TEMPTED to buy this and wrap my sons' gifts in it, warning them to unwrap carefully and not rip off Clay's face), Christmas cards--5 for $20, each signed by Clay--new keychains, bookmarks, posters (yes, the mohawk picture can be had as a poster for only $10), a beautiful tour book, BOXER SHORTS instead of thongs ($20), nightshirt and some other T-shirts.

-The venue was not prepared for Clay Nation at the souvenir stand. It was an absolute mob scene. People were throwing $20 bills at the guys working there, and the lines were moving very slowly. The credit card machine broke down before the concert, and the workers yelled out to everyone that they would take cash only, and credit card purchasers had to come back during intermissiion. After the show, I asked one of the guys working at the venue if the souvenir stand was usually that crowded (there was another mob scene at that time, as well), and he shook his head and said, "No, this is unusual."

-has anyone yet mentioned that Clay DANCED AND DANCED WELL? During the Christmas Waltz, he signaled to Angela, and she came over to him, and they began to do a slow dance, taunting us with a little WDC action (they gave us a little look when some of us reacted with excitement, as if to say, we KNEW you'd like this), but then they began a more traditional slow dance, including him twirling her around. It was very sweet, and Clay definitely CAN dance. The whole audience went "Awwwww...." Jacob and Quiana also slow danced during this number, and it did give the effect of a waltz on a dance floor.

-Clay mentioned that Walter A. was there. Faye, Brett and a friend of Brett's was there; Brett was not in uniform. John, Roger, and Kristy Hall were there. Nick, dressed very sharply in a suit, was there, standing with an attractive blond who looks familiar to us, but we don't know who she is. Jerome was tough in checking for videos and flash cameras (non-flash were allowed) and escorted out three people behind us. They were allowed back in after a few songs. However, we do know that a few people have video clack...

-drummer was NOT Derek. It was a new drummer.

-we all agree that Clay looked VERY proud of the kids who were reading the passages. He smiled at each of them when they finished and looked like a proud daddy.

Recap by nordie at the Clackhouse.

Yes, Clay's voice was rough, the younger kids were somewhat of a distraction (but I am sure Clay felt that they added to the mood), unfortunately some "fans" did not get the NO SCREAMING memo, and it was, as others have said, a very different kind of Clay concert. Instead of the experiencing that intoxicating shot of adrenaline as the music begins and the stair lights start flashing, and the grin on your face becomes immutable, this time when Clay appeared , I was struck by how without much fanfare, he took over the stage. My breath was taken away by his sheer charisma and presence. If he had not uttered a word, I am sure I would have sat spellbound for however long he stood there. It was the simplicity of the staging, the power of his voice, and his undeniable joy of performing that moved me to tears, and to an even deeper appreciation of his talent. By now you all know the songs he sang and what he wore, but I am happiest knowing that so many of you will get to experience a different side of the phenomenon that is Clay Aiken. Merry Christmas, indeed........

I put my review in the tour thread.  I wrote it within half an hour of the show so I wouldn't forget any details and then as I read the other reviews, I realize I still forgot stuff.  That's why it's fun to read reviews and more reviews, cause you get more rememberances that way.

I DIDN'T THINK I COULD CRY SO EARLY IN THE MORNING, BUT I AM.
I WAS SO AFRAID FOR HIM LAST NIGHT.  I JUST HOPE HE ISN'T WORSE TODAY BECAUSE OF THE PERFORMANCE LAST NIGHT.  I SWEAR, I THINK HE COULD JUST STAND THERE AND SMILE AND PEOPLE WOULD FLIP THEIR LIDS.  I KNOW I WOULD.

IS AMBER NIX HIS OLD HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND???

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE RECAPS.
