CLAY CAUSING ANGST IN THE RECORDING INDUSTRY?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Time magazine, the "American Idol" phenomenon is causing some angst among recording industry types-people who pride themselves on picking and developing talent. What if it turns out that the music industry doesn't need them?

..What if it turns out that people who want to be president, like the people who want to be rock stars, do better without all the experts?

The immediate cause of distress in the music industry is Clay Aiken, runner-up in last year's 'American Idol' contest. Aiken..is not what the music industry is used to producing. He has sort of dorky looks and is relentlessly clean, nice and polite. Not exactly Mick Jagger. He doesn't want to sing songs about sex and, since he's 145 pounds and 6 feet tall, we should all be grateful that he doesn't want to take his clothes off onstage. (Ditto Ruben Studdard.)

...Aiken argued with music company executive who wanted to give him more 'edge.' But Aiken wanted to remain true to the Christian, nice-guy special-ed teacher television watchers voted for last year. So far, so good. The power and clarity of his voice seem to have won him a loyal following.

In the race for Democratic Idol, only one of the three leading candidates is on the Aiken track. Something is happening in America. People are sick of experts, image makers, spinmeisters, and inside baseball...
