AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS - UPDATED 10/7

Clark's award show names nominees
American Music Awards beat out Grammys on hipness scale, but 3 hours for 20 statues?

The American Music Awards, the scrappy B-level awards show that won't go away, released its list of nominees Tuesday. The statues will be handed out during a three-hour show Nov. 16 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The AMAs, in their 31st year, are executive producer Dick Clark's baby. In his centuries-old wisdom, Clark allows the public to pick the winners, creating the illusion that the AMAs are the people's awards show, unlike the Grammys.
Also unlike the Grammys, which has more than 100 categories, the AMAs keep it simple with only 20 categories, allowing maximum time for live performances during the telecast.
For decades the Grammys have gotten grief from both professional and civilian music lovers for rewarding big sales and familiar veterans rather than artistic merit, and for being a few years behind the curve. Consequently, there have been many travesties over the years, including A Taste of Honey beating Elvis Costello and The Cars as best new artist in 1978, and Jethro Tull's victory over Metallica for best hard rock/metal album in 1989. The AMA nominees, which use sales figures and radio airplay to pick the nominees, often manage to be a little hipper then the Grammys, and this year there are few surprises.
The Clay Aiken phenomenon continues to roll, with his nomination as favorite male artist in the pop/rock category, which appears to be based on one very successful single and several months of high-quality karaoke on American Idol.
The pop/rock favorite band, duo or group category, which should be wide open, is a snoozer. Fleetwood Mac, 3 Doors Down and Matchbox Twenty? Puleeze, wake me when the winner is done thanking managers, label reps and lawyers.
Over in the soul/R&B category, teen pinups B2K have a big leg up over the desperate-to-keep-the-career-going Dru Hill and the R. Kelly mouthpiece that used to be the venerable Isley Brothers.
Hip-hop fans will howl at the favorite band, duo or group category, where the nominees are the Black Eyed Peas, crunk king Lil' Jon & the East Side Boyz and, uhhh, Bone Crusher. Here is where the AMAs show a clueless, Grammy-like grasp of the genre.
First, the Black Eyed Peas should stick to soda commercials if they are going to continue releasing mediocre hip-pop like their recent Elephunk (bet you they perform). And most embarrassingly, when I saw Bone Crusher at Blossom earlier this year, he was just one man.
A big man with big hair, big man-teats (he likes to take off his shirt) and a big voice, to be sure, but unless he's got an identical twin known only to the AMA nominating committee, he doesn't qualify as a duo, band or group.
The favorite rap/hip-hop artist is a more clear-cut group, with four hot commercial monsters, though nitpickers could argue that dance-hall artist Sean Paul stole Jay-Z's spot.
Amazingly, Alabama, which called it a career in 2003 and hasn't released an album of new material in a couple of years, is up for yet another favorite country band, duo or group award. It already has 18 little statues and its competition, Brooks & Dunn and Dixie Chicks, had more interesting years, so the nomination may have been for 23 years of loyal service to country music fans.
Even on live television it doesn't take three hours to hand out 20 awards, turning the whole shebang into an excuse for Dick Clark to pull the many, many strings in the industry to which he has access, and corral hot acts to perform on his show before the Grammys can get to them.
As with the Grammys, he or she who performs often wins, making handicapping the winners pretty easy.

Hi Pamela.  This article at Foxes on Idol seems to confirm that Clay will "perform" on the American Music Awards. (See the third paragraph from the bottom...)  Thanks for keeping us so informed on our dear one...

It doesn't seem like many places make it known that Clay is nominated for **TWO** AMA awards.  He has been nominated for Fan's Choice Award

AND  Favorite Male Artist.  Be sure to vote for both categories!

And there's a perfect example of how RCA doesn't keep Clay's 'official' website up to date very well...they should have a link there to go to the AMA Fan's Choice voting page!!

At the very least they should mention that he was nominated...GEEZ!

:( I sent a memo to RCA yesterday on this very subject.  I told them I was disappointed that neither Clay's Official site, nor the RCA site make any mention of Clay's Fan's Choice Award Nomination.  And, I suggested they put a link to vote for our boy on both sites!

As far as voting for the AMA Fan's Choice award - there is a tiny line at the bottom of the page that states 'one vote per person.'  You have to actually scroll down to see it.

That said, it is relatively easy to set up a poll that will only allow one vote per person.  This poll is *not* set up that way; it allows multiple votes.  I feel quite sure that the other nominees' fans are voting their fingers off.

Therefore, we are also forced to vote as many times as is humanly possible in order to have any chance of winning.  It does remind me of the old (AI) days...so vote!  vote!  vote!

Let's make our votes count this time!
