CLAY AIKEN: STAR OF THE HEART
By J. Grant Swank, Jr.
Oct 10, 2003, 01:10

Diane Sawyer nabbed him on Primetime, so viewers caught those glimpses they've been waiting for. No disappointment there.

Clay: nerd boy. So he told Diane: "If I carry the banner for all the nerds in the world, that’s okay with me." Nerd boy with glasses, made fun of, sidelined, particularly by a dad who took him from mom for weekends to prop him on the sofa with 3 or 4 videos. Finis. Dad disappeared.

Clay: "Kid with funny hair and down-home charm," Diane remarked. True. Funny hair, when younger and present tense. But what a smile — perfect teeth. Winsome expression. Flawless skin. Eyes that speak about his soul.

So it is that on October 14, MEASURE OF A MAN will explode as Clay’s CD. And explode it surely will for Clay’s fan clubs all around the world are making sure it goes over the top on the first day of sales. I don’t think one needs a prophet to figure that’s going to happen.

Raleigh, North Carolina is where Clay grew up — the Bible belt. So it is that Clay took in by osmosis those Bible belt truths and values and doctrines. His mother did, too.

But his biological dad, a heavy drinker, didn’t cotton to that kind of straight lifestyle. That made for a lot of stress between son and dad, so much so that Clay says his dad called him "a mistake." Clay, for that, refers to dad as a "sperm donor."

Does it still hurt? Clay speaks with Diane about those inner feelings as if detached, an adult treating psyche analysis clinically. But in Clay’s eyes there is the hurt — respectably glossed but still there, as it should be.

"If your dad called you on the phone, would you talk with him?" Diane asked. There was that sincere, long pause from Clay. Then, "I would." What is it that Clay would like to hear from his dad? Clay says that he’d like to hear him say, "’I love you’ and mean it."

Clay calls himself a "realist, not an optimist." The hard knocks of childhood obviously have crafted that philosophy. And it seems to work well for a young man with Christian faith as well as a blunt appraisal of life as it is.

Clay doesn’t smoke, drink, nor swear. He doesn’t like people who curse around him, so much so that at times he tells them to clean up their language. He doesn’t care what they think about that. It’s part of being Clay Aiken.

He admits that he’s not had sex but is instead somewhat "shy" about "social situations" such as dating and sizing up life for marriage. He says that raised by mom and two grandmothers influenced him with some feminine traits but at the same time he’s acclimated them with his maleness and is comfortable with who he is.

What if his fame burst tomorrow?

Clay would adjust quite quickly, he said. He’d find a classroom with autistic children in which to teach. He says he sees his friends now in the classrooms teaching and he’s jealous of their vocations. So moving back into helping children would be quite inviting to Clay, if and when that beckons again.

One of his students gave him the bracelet that reads WWJD — What Would Jesus Do? He wears it every day. It’s his perspective as a Christian.

Diane mentioned that dad did contact the STAR to talk with reporters. But dad didn’t bother to phone Clay after the big win on American Idol. "Why didn’t he call me?" Clay asks. Dad told reporters that if Clay wants to touch base with him again, he knows where to reach him!

While maturing, Clay realized that every time he saw his dad, it was Clay reaching out, not dad. So one day Clay told dad that if dad wanted to see him again, dad could make the next move. Dad never did.

One of the most revealing scenes in the interview was Clay with mom and family holding hands, saying grace before the meal. It’s that Jesus-centered way of doing things, thinking and planning for the future that wraps it up for Clay.

Clay Aiken, clay in the Master’s hands, for certain.
