Fantasia Barrino is America’s next American Idol. In Wednesday night's American Idol season finale, the High Point native defeated co-finalist Diana Degarmo of Georgia.

Several thousand people gathered at the Greensboro Coliseum for an American Idol viewing party.

Former “American Idol” runner-up and Raleigh native Clay Aiken rallied “American Idol” fans in Greensboro. He hosted the viewing party at a screening of the final show at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Barrino Named Third 'American Idol'

Quote
Fantasia Barrino has emerged as the winner of the third "American Idol" competition. The 19-year-old single mother from Highpoint, N.C., edged out Diana DeGarmo when results were announced tonight (May 26) during the live two-hour season finale of the Fox reality show/talent contest.

Although she found herself near the bottom of several weekly voting rounds during the season, Barrino was praised by the show's judges as she consistently improved her performances and allowed her personality to win over audiences.(SNIP)

Also incorporated were live visits to events near the finalists' hometowns. Last season's runner-up, Clay Aiken, was on hand to host the Barrino rally at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum, while second-season competitor Kimberly Caldwell sat in with DeGarmo fans at Atlanta's Georgia Dome. First season finalist Christina Christian conducted celebrity interviews on the red carpet outside the Kodak Theatre.(SNIP)

n DeGarmo's favor, history has proven second season runner-up Aiken to be a star in his own right. His RCA debut, "Measure of a Man," bowed at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has moved 2.5 million copies since its November release.

Who will win? American Idol

Clay Aiken hosts free 'Idol' party

By Howard Edwards

Will Fantasia win?
A free for all “American Idol” screening hosted by Clay Aiken, last year’s runner up, is set to be a reminder to family and Triad supporters of Fantasia Barrino that coming in second isn’t always a bad thing.

The live screening of the results program on Wednesday at the Greensboro Coliseum follows the final sing-off between Barrino and Diane DeGarmo for the American Idol title which was taking place as ESP went to press on Tuesday.

Whatever the outcome, Barrino can take heart in the fact that Idol “winners” don’t always come first. Just a year ago Aiken was second to Ruben Studdard in the same competition, but went on to outsell his soulful, rival by over two to one following the release of their first albums — Aiken’s Measure of a Man sold 631,000 copies in its first week, compared to Studdard’s 297,000, and went platinum soon after.

Since then Aiken has completed a successful tour with the winner of the first Idol competition Kelly Clarkson, which included a gig at Winston-Salem’s LJVM and he recently announced he would be on the road again beginning July 8 — on a 28 venue tour — which includes a return visit to the Greensboro Coliseum on July 16 and ends with a trip to the North Carolina State Fair on October 18.

Barrino, the 19-year-old High Point native, is hoping to go one better than her illustrious predecessor Aiken and claimed at the outset of the competition, on the American Idol Website, “I feel like it’s my time and I’m ready for America.”

However, fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be according to Aiken, who in an interview with the Houston Daily Post said, “I’m supposed to be living this glamorous life, but every night I’m sitting at home in my pajamas watching TiVo and ordering take-out.” Adding when he does get a night out, it’s usually on-stage.

Aiken will be at the Coliseum’s viewing party as the host and to provide live cut-ins to the two hour Idol result program that will reveal whether Barrino can take the crown over sweet teen queen DeGarmo. Both reached the final after topping more than 70,000 other hopefuls who auditioned for this series of American Idol.

Greensboro Coliseum’s live screening is free general admission, opens it’s doors at 6 p.m., and is free parking.

Winston-Salem fans shouldn’t feel left out. LJVM is also hosting a free screening party (also with free parking) at 7 p.m.

Who will win? Check out the contestants star quality in our Tale of the Tape.

Charts: Usher Beats Back the Man

by David Jenison
May 26, 2004, 1:00 PM PT

Just because you have the method doesn't mean you can be the man.

Despite a strong showing by rapper-actor Method Man, the artist on top of Billboard's Top 200 album chart remained all too familiar as Usher extended his number one run to an eighth week out of nine. For the week ended Sunday, Usher's Confessions sold 214,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers announced today. (SNIP)

Meanwhile, over the singles charts, JoJo's "Leave (Get Out)" finally overtook Clay Aiken's "Solitaire/The Way" at number one after spending nearly two months nipping at the American Idol alum's heels from the number two spot.

Nowadays, just being a part of the American Idol franchise can pay off big. Runner-up Clay Aiken has proved that even a loser can have a successful post-Idol career. Aiken has sold 2.5 million CDs, outselling season one and two winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard.(snip)

You can be sure that the applications are already flying in for season four of American Idol. Until the new season arrives, phillyBurbs.com offers its picks for the top 5 American Idol highlights.(snip)

1. Clay Aiken – "Measure of a Man" CD. It's hard to deny Clay Aiken's success. With a Rolling Stone cover, CD sales of 2.5 million and his boy-from-next-door appeal, it seems that Aiken can do no wrong. And Aiken's singing on his CD, "Measure of a Man," shows a lot of potential.
Listen to/buy this CD

And that's phillyBurbs.com's wrap-up of American Idol's top 5 moments.

Rock story: Not tawdry! Really!

By Jim Sullivan, Globe Staff  |  May 26, 2004

Jimmy Buffett, an author himself, said of Buzz Cason's book, "Living the Rock `n Roll Dream," "This book makes me want to quit my day gig, run off, and join a rock 'n' roll band." You may not know his name, but Cason has been part of the rock world since he formed and sang for the Casuals in 1957, and met Jerry Lee Lewis, Chubby Checker, and Ricky Nelson. He sang backup for Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley. He wrote "Everlasting Love," which has been a top 40 hit four times, most recently done by "American Idol" winner Clay Aiken. He has written and published many, many songs, and remains, according to Kris Kristofferson "living proof that nice guys do just fine, and they have the most fun." Cason's appearance at the Harvard Coop Bookstore tonight at 7 will include songs and a chat. Free. 1400 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-499-2000.

EW POLL

Did we miss this poll?  No matter, Clay won anyway!

Idol of Clay

SING IT PROUD!
Aiken is the most-liked reality TV star, according to our poll

Clay Aiken may not have won ''American Idol,'' but now he has a prize to call his own. With a total of 6,164 votes cast in the EW.com Reality TV Poll, you named the scrawny crooner your favorite reality-TV star, giving him 23 percent of the vote. The Clayster beat out ''Survivor: Pearl Islands''' Rupert Boneham (17 percent), ''Newlyweds''' Jessica Simpson (10 percent), and even fellow Idol Kelly Clarkson (15 percent). Meanwhile, tying for last place, with 1 percent each, were schlumpy Adam Mesh of ''Average Joe,'' eyeliner-loving Tammy Faye Messner of ''The Surreal Life 2,'' ''Joe Millionaire'''s first ''winner'' Zora Andrich, and Trista Rehn of ''The Bachelor''/''Bachelorette'' franchise.

As for the reality-TV star you love to hate, the winner's identity is no surprise: It's ''The Apprentice'''s Omarosa Manigualt-Stallworth, with 35 percent of the vote. The similarly conniving Jon Dalton of ''Survivor: Pearl Islands'') nabbed 12 percent, Paris Hilton (''The Simple Life'') got 8 percent, and repeat reality-show offender Trishelle Cannatella (''The Real World: Las Vegas,'' ''The Surreal Life 2'') garnered 6 percent.

Meanwhile, our condolences to Ryan Seacrest -- he lost out big-time to ''Survivor'''s Jeff Probst as favorite reality-TV host (Probst got 43 percent, while Seacrest got 25 percent). In other words: Seacrest... out.

From the Clayboard

Dave Addleson’s mention of Clay on E News Live – INCREDIBLE!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure if anyone else caught this, and I’m not sure if it has been posted. But it’s DEFINITELY worth posting again if it was.

The highlight of the evening was listening and watching Dave Addleson on E News Live - Red Carpet...he showed a clip of Kelly and said "this is the 1st season's American Idol winner according to the TV show," and then showed a clip of Ruben and said, "and here is the 2nd season's winner according to the TV show," then showed a clip of Clay and said, "But here is THE REAL WINNER of American Idol," and then proceeded to talk about how their album sales compare, gloating about Clay’s incredible record breaking sales!!!!.

Even if I NEVER watch another American Idol show, hearing and seeing this was worth the whole evening to me!!!
