A DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Quote
Don't save it all for Christmas Day
Find a way
To give a little love everyday
Don't save it all for Christmas Day
Find your way
Cause holidays have come and gone
But love lives on
If you give on Love...
-from 'Don't Save It All For Christmas Day'

There have been several eyewitness accounts of this meeting posted on the Net since the Atlanta concert.

Caring Gift
“American Idol” singer Clay Aiken makes life special for teen from Powder Springs.

Today is the traditional day for opening presents, but Powder Springs teenager Jennifer Wilson got her Christmas gift on Dec. 13. All Wilson wanted for Christmas was “American Idol” singer Clay Aiken. And thanks to the Black Eyed Peas, Wilson got to meet her “Idol” during Q100’s “Frosty the Showman” concert at the Tabernacle this month. Wilson, 15, a student at McEachern High School who was born with cerebral palsy, dutifully voted for Aiken all through the “American Idol” competition. For the “Frosty” show, she created a sign for Aiken with holiday lights. As her father, Wayne Wilson, lifted Jennifer out of her wheelchair for a bathroom break, the pair ran into the Peas, who then helped put Jennifer and Clay together backstage. “ Even though Jennifer can be sometimes difficult to understand when she speaks, Clay listened intently and understood everything she told him,” Wayne Wilson told Buzz. “ He must have spent 10 or 15 minutes with her.” Aiken also oliged with an autograph and posing for pictures. The Wilsons were so thrilled by the Black Eyed Peas’ act of kindness, the pair have gone out and purchased the band’s latest CD. “ I never expected in a million years that they would care about my daughter, a total stranger, enough to do something like that,” said Wayne Wilson. And Jennifer is still on cloud nine, her father said. “I keep asking her what else she wants for Christmas, but she told me she already got everything. This was her one wish in life. I hope Clay knows how much he helped her.” Unbeknownst to him, the spiky-haired pop singer also granted Wayne Wilson’s Christmas wish. “Jennifer has so many challenges in her life,” he said. “I’ve never seen her ride a bike or seen that kind of joy on her face ever. This meant everything to her.”

2003 was a year of musical idols and icons, arriving and passing away
TORONTO (CP) - It was a year of idols and icons in music in 2003 - the idols were finding stardom after mega-exposure on the television airwaves, the icons were fading into the musical twilight.

News of Johnny Cash (news)'s passing seemed to underscore the changing of the guard. His Sept. 12 death came amid chart battles between American Idols' Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken and only days before millions of Canadians crowned their own Idol, Ryan Malcolm

"It's brand extension," said George Stroumboulopoulos, host of MuchMusic's MuchNews. "The success of those Idol people in record sales is the same reason why people go see a movie with Tom Cruise (news) . . . I don't think people look at them like music stars, they're television stars."*

This Week's Hits: Who's Platinum?
(December 20, 2003)

Plenty of best sellers -- but who's really hot?
For an album to go platinum is the ultimate dream for an artist. When a CD goes platinum, one million copies shipped, an artist knows he's adored, respected, even loved. All those years of work have paid off, and the money flows in the door in great bucketfuls.

It's interesting to take a look at which albums, among current chart toppers, have gone platinum. Interesting because it shows how varied the music buying public is. There are a lot of different types of folks out there, as you'll see by looking at the platinum CDs.

The two albums at the very top of the chart have yet to go platinum. At #1 is Ruben Studdard's Soulful and at #2 is Alicia Keys' The Diary of Alicia Keys. Only time will tell if they'll ship a million.

The first platinum seller is found at #3, Now 14, by various artists. It's almost a mathematic certainty that this CD will sell like hotcakes: it's a compilation of recent hits. It features hits like "Crazy In Love" by Beyonce, "Right Thurr" by Chingy and "Where Is The Love" by the Black Eyed Peas.

At #4 is an album that's not just platinum, but double platinum. Country singer Toby Keith's Shock'n'Y'all has been near the top of the charts for six weeks. And right around the holidays, too. (Translated: peak buying season). A whole lot of country artists must be green with envy.

The next platinum CD is down at #6, it's Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. This one is a mega-smash that -- gasp -- is platinum six times over. Yup, that means six million copies have shipped. (To top it off, Outkast has both the #1 and #2 songs on the Hot 100 right now. In short, they own pop music.)

If the audience that's buying Outkast is young and hip, then the audience that's buying the next platinum CD is older and pretty mellow. At #7 on the album chart is Rod Stewart's The Great American Songbook, Vol. II.

After Mr. Mellow. the next four chart positions are all platinum or double platinum, shipping some 7 million albums between the four acts. But, oddly, the four acts are so different that probably no one who has bought more than one of the four.

At #8, Hilary Duff's Metamophosis (double platinum) is highly popular among girls, 21 and under.

At # 9, Sheryl Crow's The Very Best of Sheryl Crow (platinum) is a favorite of the mainstream rock crowd.

At #10, Britney Spears' In The Zone, (double platinum) is hot among the younger dance-pop set.

At #11, Clay Aiken' s Measure Of A Man (double platinum) is a major seller among Claymates and other American Idol aficionados.
(snip)

Surely they don't think the only people who bought MoaM were Claymates and AI aficionados....?  Surely they realize that all the TV and concert appearances Clay has made since the summer AI concert tour  have brought about NEW fans?  Surely they aren't that narrow minded?

IN WITH A WAR, OUT WITH AN ANNIVERSARY; THE NEWS OF 2003

Quote
The entire state could probably use a rest at the end of 2003. Over the year, North Carolinians sent loved ones to war, took a pounding from Hurricane Isabel, watched a young patient die from a botched transplant at a respected hospital, voted to make a spiky-haired young man a pop star and celebrated a century of aviation.
(snip)
As the year aged, North Carolinians found happier stories to catch their attention. Chief was the fate of Clay Aiken, a 24-year-old college student whose slender frame housed a powerful voice that turned him into an overnight pop star.
Thousands voted to turn him into an "American Idol," and though he narrowly lost the televised contest to Alabama native Ruben Studdard, he won on the charts, releasing an album that hit No. 1 in November.
Aiken appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, on "The Late Show With David Letterman" and other high-profile events.

The Ruben Studdard-Clay Aiken competition continues to find new arenas -- first ''American Idol,'' then the record store, and now in TV sitcomland. This week came the news that both performers will make their TV acting debuts in upcoming weeks, playing themselves -- Studdard on UPN's Tuesday sitcom ''One on One,'' and Aiken on NBC's Wednesday comedy/drama ''Ed.''

According to UPN, Studdard's episode will find the performer taking sides in a rivalry between single dad Flex (Flex Alexander) and neighbor Duane (Kelly Perine) in an election for condominium board president. Duane manages to book Studdard to sing for the residents in hopes of swaying votes -- perhaps not an effective strategy, given that Studdard's performance this fall at a rally supporting a tax referendum in his native Alabama failed to sway voters to pass the bill. The episode will air during February ratings sweeps, UPN said.

NBC is mum on the details of Aiken's ''Ed'' appearance, which will air in January. All we know is that he'll get stuck in Stuckeyville with Ed (Tom Cavanagh) and his quirky pals. No doubt he'll also find an opportunity to sing; maybe he'll show off his bowling skills as well.

Clay Shows Chart Staying Power, Kelly Dropping Down
by David Bloomberg -- 12/26/2003

We had news on Ruben’s album and single yesterday, now we have more information on other Idols on the charts. Clay is still doing well, and has three singles on one chart. But Kelly isn’t so lucky. Read on for full details.

Yesterday, I brought you up to date on the chart position of Ruben for his album and single. Full information was not yet available on others on the chart. Now it is, so let’s take a look at other Idols.

Overall, Clay Aiken is the BMOC (Big Man On the Charts) again this week as far as Idols go. His Measure of a Man album held for the third week at #11 even as other albums were jumping in sales by large percentages (see yesterday’s article for more information on those). No Doubt’s album jumped over his, from #12 to #9, while Britney Spears fell from #10 to #13. Yes, Clay’s album, which has been out for 10 weeks, is currently outselling Britney’s, which has been out for five.

Clay single, “Invisible,” also held its position at #43 on The Billboard Hot 100 for the third week. And he continues to hold three positions on the Adult Contemporary chart, all of which moved up. “Invisible” went from #11 to #8. “The First Noel” follows it at #9, up from #13. And his duet with Kimberley Locke, “Silver Bells,” went from #19 to #16, with it labeled as having the most significant jump in airplay.

Of course, within the next week, we should start to see the Christmas songs dropping off the chart, with the pretty much disappearing altogether in a couple weeks. This will mean a wholesale redistribution of the Adult Contemporary chart, as eight of the Top 20 – including #1 – are Christmas songs.

But the news is not all good for the Idols. Kelly Clarkson’s album, Thankful, fell out of the Top 100 from its #92 spot last week. Meanwhile, her single, “My Grown Up Christmas Wish,” fell on the Adult Contemporary chart from #18 to #19, having been overtaken by Clay and Kimberley. Of course, her sales may show an increase next week due to her World Idol appearance.

As discussed by Donna Reynolds in her article earlier this week, Kimberley Locke will have a single out January 5, so that will be yet another Idol in the mix. With the Christmas shopping season over, sales should settle back to normal again soon. It will be interesting to see how all of our Idols do at that point.
