Fans were achin' for Clay

An audience estimated at 5,000 played a game of "Waiting for Clay" on Friday night at the Pepsi Coliseum.

It was a patient group -- one that arrived in force from Singapore, Hawaii, Kansas City and Cleveland to see "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken perform at a holiday concert presented by radio station WNOU-FM (93.1).

Although the wait included six warm-up acts, dedicated "Claymates" (or "Santa Clays" on this night) didn't consider the delay to be a dirty trick. If you're truly in tune with the 25-year-old from North Carolina, you were aware he was contracted for little more than a cameo appearance.

"It will be a great ending, but we hope he sings more than three songs," said Ann Erks, who traveled from Nebraska and knew what to expect. So, despite Erks' wishful thinking, Aiken came on at 10:30 p.m. and performed "I Will Carry You," "Run to Me" and current single "Invisible." Eternally the boy next door, Aiken arrived under full house lights, even as Radio Now's DJs were gathered onstage.

The use of recorded backing tracks didn't enhance the experience, and the wide-eyed wonder Aiken displayed during this summer's "AI" tour has been replaced by an unnerving air of geek suave.

Clay-mania aside, the Santa Slam showcased what makes Radio Now a pretty valuable asset for Indianapolis. The station -- true to its motto -- plays all the hits.

This means no genre is excluded from the play list, and Black Eyed Peas can comfortably share a stage with the All-American Rejects. If any band added torment to the Aiken Army's wait, it was the Oklahoma-based Rejects.

INDY STAR REVIEW

You know what?  It looks like the Indy media would have been kind enough to say something nice about the man that sold most of the tickets to their little concert.
Tis the season and all that.  What party poopers.

That's okay.  Like I always say, you get what you give.  The fans were there in force for Clay and he gave them something to remember. I understand from people who were there that Clay was SMOKIN on that stage last night.  Some of them have said that it was the best Invisible EVER.  Yes, I'm trying to find video.   :

The full review is in the Clay in Concert forum.

Evidently Clay was mentioned on the Craig Kilborne late night talk show last night.
And not in a bad way.   8)

Right before his "In the News" bit, Craig says, "I'm in a good mood and you wanna know why? It's Friday. And all I wanna do is dance. Dance. Dance." Then he starts dancing around and even does "The View" jacket move. The phone then rings and he picks it up and says, "Hello? What? Those are not your moves!  You don't own those moves! I've been doing those moves since the 80's, Clay Aiken!"  Screams from the audience when Clay's name was mentioned.
